Instantly killed was Willie Euel Tye 35, farmer of Hinckley, driver of the car, a '48 Dodge Club Coupe. Driver of the 3 ton flat bed stake truck, Albert Cavanaugh 50, San Bernardino, sustained a fracture of the left knee cap. According to statements made by Cavanaugh to the highway patrol officer, he sighted the car when it was within 600 ft. and sounded his horn but failed to alert the driver. The vehicles meeting in a cut in the highway, made it impossible for him to wheel the truck from the path of the onrushing car. Tye struck the truck head on at the left fender continuing down the left side, which resulted in the car's roof being torn off by the bed of the truck. The impact threw the truck onto its side and left the car upright but completely demolished. Tye's body was removed to the O'Donnell Funeral Home and Cavanaugh was brought to Mojave Hospital. He was later taken to San' Berdoo for further treatment. Tye's remains were shipped to Shafter Tuesday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Janell and 3 children. The inquest, held Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. brought statements from Harold Allersmeyer, first on the scene of the accident, and called as a witness. He told of Tye's having passed him about 4 miles before the crash and at that time he appeared to be sleepy and was drifting over the white line. He also stated he had not seen the actual impact but only the dust raised. However, he was able to substantiate Highway Patrolman Stanley Allen's report of the condition and position of the vehicles after the accident.
