The newspapers are not indexed and searching for an obit means reading the daily papers until the obit is located. No matter how much we volunteers want to help we just don't have the time (or the eyesight!) to read months and months of old, faded newspapers on the off chance we might spot something. The state of California has created an index of deaths from the death certificates issued since July 1905. This index is online and freely available to everyone. You should try to use it and get an exact date of death for those you want to locate obit notices for. The index will also tell you exactly which county in California where the person died. You would then have a better idea of exactly which county volunteer to ask to help you locate the obituary you want. Here are the URLs for the California Death Indexes. They have been divided by the state as follows: 1905 - 1929; 1930 - 1939 http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ca/_vitals/cadeathm.htm 1940 - 1997 http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi The best of luck in your search!
