Bender, 85, who came to Kern County as a teacher in 1877, died today at her home here. She first taught in the Gold Camp area of Walker's Basin and later at Sumner, Greenfield, Havilah, Beardsley and Caliente schools. Most of Bakersfield's leading residents were taught by her at the Washington School, where she was teacher and principal for 20 years, until her retirement in 1930. She was one of seven students at the Los Angeles Normal School in 1883. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Paul's Church with Rev. Ralph H. Cox, rector, officiating.
