Air Force, on exchange duty with Marine Attack Squadron 223, was killed in an aircraft accident at the Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station, Mojave, California at 4:30 p.m. on April 17, 1958. Captain Patton was engaged in a routine training flight firing aircraft rockets when his aircraft apparently disintegrated in mid-air. The accident occurred on the MCAAS, Mojave rocket and bombing range and there was no damage to government or private property on the ground. Captain Patton is survived by his wife, two children, and his parents. Marine Attack Squadron 223 is attached to Marine Aircraft Group 15 of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California and was deployed to MCAAS, Mojave, for a period of intensive ordnance training.
