Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADE/8492 Message Board Post: Head On Crash Takes Two Lives A grinding head-on crash took the lives of two drivers when a small MG sports car and a 1957 Chevrolet came together on Hwy. 6-16, miles north of Mojave near Cinco, Tues. afternoon at 2:00. California Highway. Patrol investigators said the small foreign built car was traveling, northward on Hwy. 6 and was over the center line at the point of impact. The driver, Walter A. Goodennow, 24, of Huntington Park was DOA at Mojave Hospital. He very likely lost control of the car. Driver, of the other car, which burst into flames, was Donald H. Gottschall, 32 of Highland Park, Ill., He was tossed from the car and trapped under it. Only prompt action by California Highway maintenance crews working near by- saved his life by removing him from the burning vehicle. Mojave Ambulance brought all the injured, to Mojave Medical Center where Mr. Gottschall died at 6:22 Wednesday morning. Also injured were 3 passengers in the Gottschall car. These were his wife, Ellen, 28, and a couple traveling with them, a Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gilbert also of Highland Park, Illinois. Both women suffered broken legs and bruises, but Mr. Gilbert was released after treatment. Mojave Kern County Fire equipment in charge of Capt Woods, extinguished the fire which completely ruined the 1957 Cheve. CHP Officer Kenneth De La Marr, aided by Sgt. Dick Ledwidge of the Mojave Sheriffs station investigated the accident. Wrecked cars were towed in by Bud's, and Carder's Garage.
