Sylvester of Bakersfield, a coast artillery officer, who was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, has been honored by the naming of the U. S. Mine Planter Lieutenant Sylvester. The coast artillery officer was a son of Mrs. Leslie Anderson, 3015 Park Way, Bakersfield. He was attached to an anti aircraft artillery unit when he was killed by a bomb sometime between 7:57 and 8:06 A.M. December 7th. Nix, husband of Mrs. Goldie Nix of Taft, who has been missing since August 19, 1943, has been declared officially dead by the war department. Captain Nix, the pilot of a B17, was reported missing following a raid from his base in England over Holland. He held the Air Medal and the Purple Heart will be given posthumously. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Nix of Fellows and attended the Taft Union High School and Junior College, where he won varsity awards in track and boxing. He received flying training at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Oklah; Goodfellow Field, San Angelo, Tex., and Ellington Field, Tex. Karpe, 21, of Bakersfield, copilot of a B17, who was reported missing in action over Germany August 16th. A telegram from Adjutant General J. A. Ulio to Karpe's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer F. Karpe, of Rosedale, and his wife, the former Frances Roberts, of Tupman, now living with the Karpes in Rosedale, says it has been established the lieutenant was killed August 16th. Karpe was graduated from the Bakersfield High School and Junior College and was attending the University of California at Los Angeles when he quit to join the army air forces. A. Anderson, 3015 Park Way, to give his life in the service of his country, is Second Lieutenant Robert Neill Sylvester, 25, who has been reported killed in action in the South Pacific area. His brother, Lieutenant William Sylvester, was killed December 7, 1941, at Hickam Field, Honolulu, where he was stationed with a coast artillery anti aircraft unit. Robert Sylvester was a P38 pilot. He attended the Bakersfield High School and Junior College. He joined the army air corps in January, 1942. Previously he was a carpenter foreman on a government project. He received his flight training at Santa Ana, the Rankin Aeronautical Academy and Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz. On June 16th Sylvester shot down his first Zero. He was reported missing a few days later. Hodges, 68, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the H. R. Borgsdorf Mortuary. The Rev. Arthur Bomers, pastor of the Union Congregational Church, and the Rev. Eugene Harshman, pastor of St. Peter's Episcopal Mission, will officiate and interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Hodges was born in Griggsville, Ill., and had lived in California for the last 38 years. For the last 3 1/2 years he has resided in Arvin at 635 Third St. Prior to that he was custodian of the Rosedale School for eight years, and custodian in the Bakersfield City School system for 10 years. He was a past president of the Bakersfield Garden Club and past noble grand of IOOF, Bakersfield Chapter 440. Mr. Hodges died on Oct 18 in a Bakersfield hospital following a lengthy illness.
