H. Franey of 1700 Forest Street, Bakersfield, were notified by the war department late yesterday their youngest son, Corporal Francis Franey, 22, was killed in the Marshall Islands in the crash landing of a B29. Young Franey, who was born and reared in Bakersfield, was chief gunner on a B29. He was educated in the local schools and attended Santa Clara University before entering the army. His father, a well known local insurance man, formerly was connected with the banking business here. There are three other brothers in the service, Joseph, serving with the army in Europe; John, in India, and Lieutenant Gerald Franey, in Germany. A. McCurdy of Santa Cruz, was killed in battle in France February 4th. McCurdy was a member of the tank corps. He attended the Taft schools and was graduated from the Taft Junior College in 1941. The family resided on the Honolulu Oil Company lease until a few years ago, when the elder McCurdy was retired and the family moved to Santa Cruz. McCurdy had been overseas approximately a year. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Shirley McCurdy, and his parents, he is survived by two aunts residing in Taft, Mrs. Ruth Scheidt and Mrs. Letha Colbert. O. (Johnnie) Oxford, 318 Buchanan Street, was killed in action in Germany December 13th. Mr. and Mrs. Oxford received a letter from him only Tuesday, in which he said he was "in Germany as far as any Yank." Oxford had been overseas since October, 1944. He would have been 21 years old next April. He was graduated from the Taft Union High School, where he played football in 1941, and enlisted in the army March 20, 1942, while attending the Santa Barbara State College. Gentry of Oildale who was killed in action in Belgium January 18, 1945. The services will be at 2 PM in the Greenlawn Chapel with Rev. B. C. Barrett of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park. Gentry was 37 years old at the time of his death. His body is being returned by the army transport Carroll Victory and is due here on Monday. He is survived by three sons, James and Ray Gentry of Visalia and Robert Gentry, United States Marine Corps, Camp Pendelton; his mother, Mrs. Anna M. Gentry of Oildale; a brother Elmer S. Gentry of Oildale, and three sisters, Mrs. Florence Tripp and Mrs. Mildred Smith, both of Fresno and Mrs. Alice McArthur of Wallula, Wash. Vedder of the marine corps as killed in action. Vedder was a son of Dwight G. Vedder, former oil geologist who became the owner of extensive oil properties in the Mount Poso area. The family lived a Coalinga and Bakersfield and Milton Vedder spent his boyhood in this city. His wife lives at the Motel Inn here. In May, 1943, a dispatch from the South Pacific told how a navy flying boat had rescued Vedder from an island after his plane had been shot down by Japanese. Nutt of Bakersfield was killed in action on Luzon. His mother, Mrs. J. B. Alsup of this city, was notified of his death in a telegram from the war department. Nutt landed at Lingayen Gulf early in the invasion, in which a brother, First Lieutenant Frank Nutt, also participated. He was wounded by a sniper January 27th, recovered and returned to active duty. Another brother, Corporal Kenneth Nutt, also is in the Philippines. Sergeant Nutt was born in Taft, was graduated from the Bakersfield High School and was a member of the Future Farmers of America. Besides his two brothers and mother, who lives at 123 Mears Drive, he is survived by a step-father, J. B. Alsup; a sister in law, Mrs. F. M. Nutt; a niece, Nancy Jeanne Nutt; his father, E. M.
