John was born on Feb. 13, 1925 at Hermitage, Tenn. His parents, Doc and Berry, had two daughters and one son. Young John and his family lived near President Andrew Jackson's home, The Hermitage, one of the largest plantations in the South. John has boyhood memories of playing on the bannister of the Jackson home and walking in the surrounding fields and orchards. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, John married Imogene Poyner on Thanksgiving Day, 1947. They settled in Old Hickory, Tenn., near Nashville and bought his parents a home next door. The Dupont plant was nearby and John worked for that company all the while they lived in Tennessee. Their family began in 1948 with the birth of daughter Sharon, and two years later along came Shauna in 1950. John and Imogene moved to Panama City, Fla., in 1959 to begin a new life in the motel and florist business. John Jr. was born there. As he grew, John accompanied his parents on trips to Hawaii, Greece, and other trips around the world. The Hays loved helping people, especially near the Christmas holidays, and were known to give away Meltown decorated Christmas tree to a family who didn't have one and took cookies to the highway patrol and police who were on duty during the holidays. In 1998 John moved to Cayucos to live with Shauna and David Bowers. He and "Little Bit" enjoyed the downtown area of Morro Bay. He moved to Tehachapi in April 2004, where he quickly adjusted to the mountains and the welcomed train whistles. The mountain air and weather agreed with him and he walked Little Bit near the mountains instead of the ocean. John was a collector and enjoyed finding and saving coins of all kinds. Family heirlooms were especially valuable to him because of the memories they brought back of his father and mother in Tennessee. John's children were precious to him and he always was concerned with their lives and health. John is survived by daughter Shauna Bowers, of Tehachapi; son John J. Hays, Jr. and his wife Terry, of Deland, Fla.; grandchildren, Candy Alford, Jason and Christian Erlingspill, Noah King, John J. Hays III, Crystal, Melanie and Katie Hays; and step-daughter, Marie Bradford and her husband Jaime, of Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon King; and son-in-law, David Bowers. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements. Willis FIND BODY Rumors flew thick and fast when a man identified as Hurvey F. Willis, 50, was found lying on the ground in the rear of 327 K Street in Mojave. An eye witness, Mr. Sherman, is alleged to have said he saw another man, identified as Jack Harman, standing over the body of the man which he reported to Constable George Hodges who called a doctor and the man was pronounced dead, whereupon the Coroner was called. On investigation by the Mojave Sheriff's office revealed that there had been a fight between the two men and pending an autopsy Mr. Harman was booked on suspicion of murder. The fight, it is said, was caused by Harman's demand that Willis move out of a cabin he had been living in free. When the man refused, the owner, Harman, put him out. Deputy Coroner Ross Jones, of Bakersfield was called and ordered the body taken to Kern General Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Later information revealed the fact that Mr. Willis had been a very sick man and this was supported by the autopsy which gave the cause of death as lobar pneumonia with other complications. These facts caused the release of Jack Harman and the charges against him were dropped by the District Attorney's office. Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADE/7691 Message Board Post: Truck-Car Crash Kills Hinckley Man Another fatality was added to the grim list of highway deaths, Monday at 1:20 P.M., when a car and truck met in a head-on sideswipe collision 10 miles west of Mojave on Highway 466. Instantly killed was Willie Euel Tye 35, farmer of Hinckley, driver of the car, a '48 Dodge Club Coupe. Driver of the 3 ton flat bed stake truck, Albert Cavanaugh 50, San Bernardino, sustained a fracture of the left knee cap. According to statements made by Cavanaugh to the highway patrol officer, he sighted the car when it was within 600 ft. and sounded his horn but failed to alert the driver. The vehicles meeting in a cut in the highway, made it impossible for him to wheel the truck from the path of the onrushing car. Tye struck the truck head on at the left fender continuing down the left side, which resulted in the car's roof being torn off by the bed of the truck. The impact threw the truck onto its side and left the car upright but completely demolished. Tye's body was removed to the O'Donnell Funeral Home and Cavanaugh was brought to Mojave Hospital. He was later taken to San' Berdoo for further treatment. Tye's remains were shipped to Shafter Tuesday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Janell and 3 children. The inquest, held Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. brought statements from Harold Allersmeyer, first on the scene of the accident, and called as a witness. He told of Tye's having passed him about 4 miles before the crash and at that time he appeared to be sleepy and was drifting over the white line. He also stated he had not seen the actual impact but only the dust raised. However, he was able to substantiate Highway Patrolman Stanley Allen's report of the condition and position of the vehicles after the accident. The search ended at 4 p.m. Sunday when Deputy Coroner Ross Jones and a sheriff's party reached the scene of the crash on the south side of Double Mountain, midway between Rosamond and Lebec. The battered body of the pilot, William Glen Sweitzer, 36, of Phoenix, Ariz., was found in the wreckage of the plane. It was the first air crash fatality in Kern County for 1953. Planned Bakersfield Stop Sweitzer left San Bernardino at 11 a.m. Saturday, filing a flight plan for San Arda, with a stop for gasoline at Bakersfield. His last radio message was received as he passed, Palmdale and flew into an area of high winds. Investigators believe the light plane was caught in a down-draft and crashed at the 6,000-foot level. The Civil Air Patrol was called to help the search at 7 a.m. Sunday. Seven of its aircraft began a systematic combing of the rugged area northwest of Palmdale. At 9:40 a.m. W. O. Arthur Weis of Bakersfield Squadron 113 reported sighting the wreckage and flying low enough to make positive identification from the letters and numbers on the wings. With the volunteer pilot were two observers, Henry Washburn and Russell Ford, both privates from Shafter Squadron 111. March Field authorities arranged for a drop of three paratroopers on the 6,000-foot crest. They reported Sweitzer's death and awaited the arrival of th~ ground party led by Sheriff’s Sergeant Harold B. Miller of Mojave Substation. With the latter group were Jones of the Coroner's office and Deputy Sheriff Edward Miner and Joe Johnson, the latter from the identification bureau. The ground party was able to drive to within a mile of the crash. "From there it was straight up," reported Jones. The body was brought to the O'Donnell Funeral Home in Mojave, pending funeral arrangements. Sweitzer's wife was advised of the tragedy during the afternoon. The body was flown to Phoenix, Ariz., for burial. Posted by East Kern Genealogical Society Courtesy of Mojave Desert News California City, Kern, CA Published: 26 Mar 1953
