Durham of Simi, Calif., fell to his death from the top of a cliff, when the Scout staff he was carrying dropped from his grasp and he made an effort to retrieve it. The rock which he was standing on slipped from under him and he fell 50 ft., followed by another fall of 30 ft. further, fracturing his skull. The boy was a member of Scout Troop No. 602 of Ventura County Council and 200 Scouts of that group made the trip to Red Rock Canyon for an overnight hike on Friday last. They intended to stay over until Sunday, but left for home after the tragic accident occurred. O'Donnell's ambulance brought the boy to Mojave Medical Center where he died at 11:30 a.m. An inquest was held by Deputy Coroner Ross Jones of the Coroner's office at the O'Donnell Funeral Home in Mojave on Monday, resulting in a verdict of accidental death. Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ at Tarzana, Calif., on Tuesday, Dec. 1,. under the direction of O'Donnell Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. E Louis Mick officiating. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery at Chatsworth, Calif., with Troop No. 602 of Boy Scouts of America, Simi, Calif. and other Scouts of the Ventura County Council in attendance. He was identified as 2nd Lt. John J. De Pasqua of Randolph, Mass. by the El Toro Marine Base. De Pasqua was a member of the 232nd Marine Fighter Squadron find was testing the new jet plane when he crashed into the mountains 2 miles north of Hwy. 466. Reports said it was traveling in excess of 450 miles an hour when it hit. Kern County Firemen said the exploding jet threw burning parts over a 300-yd.radius and started a brush fire that burned most of the night. A Marine rescue crew reached the scene about 4 p.m. and the body was removed by a helicopter from El Toro. The body was brought to the O'Donnell Funeral Home to await arrival of the widow Claire Margaret De Pasqua of Santa Ana. Fireman under Capt. Woods of Mojave station and also men from Tehachapi and Keene were on the scene to fight the fire. The victim was the son of Mrs. Evelyn De Wald, 649 Athens St., Altadena. He was visiting his uncle, Ben Ordway, at the time. The tragedy occurred at the West Antelope Pump station of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, 18 miles from Mojave. The shot was fired from a gun in the hands of 13-year old Raymond D. Atkinson, son of Farrell G. Atkinson who was working as a patrolman for the Aqueduct in the absence of "Reg" Kelsey. The dead boy and his uncle stopped at the Atkinson trailer, parked near the station, to borrow; a rifle. While the two men were inside the house drinking coffee: the younger Atkinson went inside the trailer to get the gun. . Raymond told Dep. Sheriffs K. J C. Fiddler and Bill Boruff he stumbled as he stepped from the trailer and the gun was discharged accidently. The officers said the victim was standing 93 feet from the trailer steps. The bullet passed through his neck, entering it from the front right side. The missle then went on to pierce two wooden walls investigators reported. O'Donnell ambulance was called from Mojave and the Sheriff's sub-station was notified. Dr. Gish, of Mojave Medical Center, who accompanied the ambulance pronounced the boy dead when he arrived on the scene. The body was removed to the O'Donnell Funeral Home and an inquest will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 6. Killed instantly was Roy Chandler of 642 D Prefab Street, China Lake, driver of the car. He apparently went to sleep at the wheel, swerving across the road directly into the path of the heavily loaded truck and trailer. Driver of the truck was John P. Vink, of Norwalk, who was accompanied by his two children, Yvonne age 10 and Richard, 6. In the resultant melee, the truck overturned. The children escaped injury, while the father received bruises and abrasions. Hay was scattered all over the highway. O'Donnell ambulance was called and brought the dead man back to Mojave, where his body was prepared for shipment to Fresno for burial. Mr Chandler leaves his wife, Olivia and son Edward, 13, of China Lake. Mr. Chandler was a veteran oj World War II and was a member of the American Legion of Ridgecrest. Bumgardner, 61, died Friday, November 27 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Icle Smith of 2079 Porter Street in San Bernardino. He was a native of Cromwell, Okla. and a resident of Boron, Calif. for the past seven years having been employed by the Pacific Coast Borax Company. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. May Bumgardner of Boron, six sons, Ralph, Joe, Bobbie Dale all of Boron, and Noah of San Bernardino and Otis of Sunnyvale, Calif. Three daughters, Icle Smith of San Bernardino, Darlene Fairchild of Boron and Imogene Poage of Wewoka, Okla; one brother, Sam Bumgardner of Washington D.C. and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 1st at the Boron Mines recreation hall with the Rev Clell Horton officiating with the assistance of Rev. Kenneth Lawson of the Boron Assembly of God Church. Opal Shelton and Opal Saucer sang “Sweet Hour of Prayer”, “In the Garden” and “Previous Memories”, Genevieve Deborah accompanying on the piano. Interment followed in the Barstow Cemetery, pall bearers were Chuck Baldwin, Ernest Shelton, Sut Robertson, B.B. Potts, Bob Blair and Elmer Price. Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADE/7755 Message Board Post: Three Killed In Accident at R R Crossing Death struck three members of a family and injured three others when their car struck a Southern Pacific locomotive at the Jawbone Crossing at the north end of Mojave Sunday night at approximately 9:45 p.m. Killed outright in the tragic accident were Frank Bruner, 63, of Oakdale, Calif. and his brother Otis T. Bruner, 75, of Valley Home, Calif. Injured were Carrie Bruner, 70, wife of Otis; Marion, 40, wife of Frank and their two children Gerald, 5, and Jack E, 5 months. The five year old boy died of a severe skull fracture and concussion and died at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Kern General Hospital. First aid was administered at the Mojave Medical Center, then O'Donnell Ambulance took the injured persons to Kern General. Later, Mrs. Marion Bruner and the baby were transferred to a hospital near their home town. An investigation was held Monday, with no blame being fixed on anyone for the accident. He was born August 4, 1889 in Sacramento, California and had been interested in mining a good part of his life. At the time of his death, he was a light equipment operator for the Kern Co. Road Dept. Mr. Brown was a member of F.O.E. Bakersfield Aerie No. 93 and had been a resident of Rosamond for the past three years. The family had formerly lived at the Golden Queen Housing. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marjory O. Brown, Rosamond; son, Paul Brown, of Boron; two daughters, Mrs. Theda Mellor and Mrs. Elsie Crain of Inglewood; mother, Mrs. Ella Hickok and sister Mrs. Bessie Curless, both of Rosamond, and four grand children. Funeral services were held in the O'Donnell Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 7, at 11:00 a.m. Officiant was the Rev. William R. Hedgepeth, formerly of Wayside Chapel, but now pastor of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church of EI Monte Calif. Interment was in the Mojave Cemetery. Numbering one of seven in the party, Barron, who was sitting on a five gallon can after the party who had tired of hunting rabbits turned their attention to target practice, suddenly stood up as Rudy Vasquez, 23, also of Whittier, shot over his head, the bullet striking him in the head. Barron, who was married and the father of two children, was taken to Mojave Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival and the body removed to the O'Donnell Funeral Home. A Coroner’s inquest held Wednesday, October 14, at the funeral home by Deputy Coroner Ross Jones, came to the conclusion that deathwas the result of an accident and Vasquez was not held. John Wertz of the Kern County District Attorney's office assisted. Hamilton Thatcher, 14, came to his death a week ago Sunday in a rabbit hunting accident near Willow Springs after his party had turned to target shooting. A ten-year-old Altadena boy was also accidentally shot by his 13-year-old companion about two months ago. In all instances a .22 caliber rifle figured. Liz was a long-time resident of Mojave graduating from Mojave High School. In June of 1965 Liz married the love of her life Randell Taylor and had three beautiful daughters and four grandchildren. Liz was predeceased by her daughter Marie Taylor and her parents Earle and Billie Roper. She leaves behind her loving husband, Randy, daughters, Kimberly Coleman, Elnora Wilson, Wendy and Kyleigh who were all the light of her life. Liz touched many lives with her kindness, gentle spirit and her willingness to serve others. Liz will be greatly missed and always loved by her family and many friends she leaves behind. Services will be held on Thursday, April 14 at A Place in the Son, located at 38117 13th St East in Palmdale at 2 p.m. Interment services following at 4 p.m. at Mojave Cemetery. Williford of Rosamond passes away Williford, Jim R was born in Carrollton, Texas on January 19, 1928 and passed away Friday April 8, 2005 at his Rosamond home. The eldest son of Jim and Mary Catherine Williford, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ella Nolene in 2004, both his parents and brother David Powell Williford. He leaves behind a sister: Mary Lou and Charles Holt of Alaska; sister~in-law: Leora Williford; mother-in-law: Mary Opal Murray; children and grandchildren: Russell, Christy, Amanda & Thomas Williford; Ella, Luiz, Lupe, Josie, Esther and Lou Joe Garcia, Maria and Chris Coupland & great-grandson Christopher Coupland II; Vickie Williford & Timm Monahan; and Omer Williford. There are also numerous extended family members in California, Texas, and Alaska. Married in June of 1959 he went to work at Edwards Air Force Base as an Experimental Machinist, working on development of early experimental aircraft. Jim became involved in the Real Estate industry in the late 60's with Rosamond Realty. He stayed active in the business until his death. His other passion in life was support of the youth of Rosamond. He supported many activities his children were involved in. He was instrumental in placement of both the 1st and 2nd crosses on the 'R' hill for Easter Sunrise Service, active in Boy Scout Troop 41, helped start Little League in Rosamond, worked with 4-H, FFA, Little Britches Rodeo, and the Jr. Livestock Auction at the AV Fair. Jim was a Kiwanis 'Legion of Honor' recipient as well as Kiwanian of the Year in 1996. His contributions to non-profit organizations are numerous and include the Rosamond Hills 'Golden Oldies' and the Kern County Sheriff's Depart. Citizen Service Unit. Other community involvements were the Rosamond Communi! ty Fair, the Chili Cook-off at Tropico Gold Mine, and ETI Corral #58. In 2000, the California State Senate honored Jim for 47 years of service to the youth of this community. Jim was a founding member of the Rosamond Hills Apt. Retirement housing complex and the Southern Kern Roping & Riding Club. He was still an active participant with the Boy Scouts and played Senior Citizen Bingo every week. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to any of these organizations in Jim's' name. Service will be held Thursday April 14th at noon at Stickel Mortuary, Inyo St, Mojave, with internment following at Mojave Cemetery. 'MR. ROSAMOND', as he was known to many, will be missed, and will leave an obvious hole in the lives of many. His involvement in and passion for this community will be hard to surpass.
