Townsend of Mojave, his wife and Hattie Schaff, a sister as survivors. Funeral services were held at Mumaw Funeral Home, Lancaster, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 1953, the service being read by Florence Harmon, a Christian Scientist, with interment in Angeles Abby, Compton. The interesting sketch of Mr. Townsend's life follows: After playing professional base ball with the Syracuse Club in the New York State League, and Sacramento, in the California Coast League with which club he also umpIred for a short while, he later played in Bakersfield for the Imperial League. Leaving there he came to Mojave where he homesteaded on the desert in 1914. He ran the French Cafe and Mojave Meat Market for several years then several service stations here for a number of years. About 1924 Mr. Townsend in partnership with I. Blum bought the Mojave Townsite Lots from Mallory and Flannigan. He later had an interest in the Golden Queen Mine as one of the original owners. In 1921 he was elected Justice of the Peace, and served for eight years, declining to run again. At the time he came to Mojave, "J" Street had only wooden plank sidewalks, each walk at a different level; wide wooden canopies over each place of business (also each at a different height); no street lights of any kind; one Chinese restaurant besides the Harvey House and 13 saloons to serve the population of 500 people. In the winter time the streets became so sticky from the wet doby that horses were used to pull the cars out of the mud. For many years water pressure was so low that they could only send a stream about ten feet, and fires were frequent, especially along J Street, usually taking several buildings at a time. Recently he was presented with a beautiful watch by the Sacramento Coast League Club as one of the survivors of the first Sacramento team. He was a life member of the National Baseball Association and had many friends in California and elsewhere. He was born at Cooney Fork, Wisconsin, January 28, 1873. The victim was Mr. Don Carlos Robertson, who was thought to have been coming back from Bakersfield at the time of the wreck. He was supposed to have been at work in the Mag room at the PCB mines that morning. No one knows the cause of the wreck but the highway patrolman said his car looked like it had turned end over end twice on the highway and twice off the road when it headed for the desert. The rear left tire was blown out and the top of the car was smashed flat. Don was lying eighty feet away from the car badly mangled so that is was difficult to identify him. Don was to have started a two weeks vacation on last Monday. Reason for the tragedy was thought to have been one of two things, either he went to sleep at the wheel or the tire blew out. He had just taken his car out of the fender and body shop a few days before. Don leaves as survivors, his widow, Mrs Barbara Robertson and two sons Del Ray and Tom Michael, father and step mother Mr. and Mrs. Sutter Robertson, and four sisters and three brothers. He was born November 19, 1929 at Clarksville Arkansas and grew up around Stadium, Oklahoma. His family came to California for the second time in 1946 and Don got a job at the PCB Co. in July of that year. Except for time out for military service, he worked continuously until his death. He entered the Army in November of 1950 and took his basic training at Camp Roberts. Don was sent to Korea in May 1951 and was twice wounded in battle. He was discharged in July 1952 as a Sergeant. The funeral was held Tuesday, August 18, at the Boron Baptist Community Church under the direction of O'Donnell Funeral Home in Mojave. John Dudley Jones, 85, well known to people of this part of Kern County. He was born in Iowa, December 27, 1868 and arrived in California in 1895. coming to Kern County in 1915 where he has remained ever since, passed away at the Kern General Hospital on Nov. 21, 1953. Mr. Jones leaves a sister, Mrs. Rose Plaisted of 610 Ferris Ave., Los Angeles and a brother, Robert Jones of Redwood, Calif. to mourn his passing. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Armstrong Mortuary of Bakersfield. The first time Jonesy saw Mojave was in 1901, and he told us some years ago about the dusty streets and hitching racks in the front of every building, also that the northern limits of town was Mrs. Caplin’s feed yard located at J and Nadeau Sts. where the Standard Oil Co. at one time had a service station. He was in and out of Mojave up to 1906 during which time he drove stages for the Mojave and Keeler line whose depot was next door to Ma McDonald’s rooming house and the barn was where the Odd Fellows Hall now stands. The route started out K Street and roughly followed Highway 6. The first rest station where the horses were changed was located across from the Minard place and was called the 18 mile house. Time allowed for this leg of the trip was three hours and the fare was $10 to Keeler, the entire trip using up 21 hours with the stage on the road night and day. A long period of time elapsed before Jonesy saw Mojave again, to be exact in 1921. Most transportation was by automobile by then and roads a bit better. He has spent the last 32 years here and in Tehachapi watching the towns grow to their present size.
