Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADE/7904 Message Board Post: Bullet Kills Teen-age Boy Making the fourth accidental shooting while hunting rabbit near Mojave in the past 6 months 15-year-old Warren Leider of Van Nuys, was accidentally shot and killed by his boy companion Larry Keever, also 15, on Sunday afternoon. The boys were hunting in the hill country 12 miles west of Mojave last Sunday afternoon, Jan 10th, when young Keever slipped and fell causing the .22 calibe rifle he was carrying to strike the ground and discharge, sending a bullet crashing thru the back of Leider's head, according to the story told to Dep. Coroner Stanley Newman. Screaming that Leider had been shot, Keever contacted his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Keever who had taken the boy in the pickup to the bottom of the hill. Mr. Keever and his son raced up the hill to the scene of the shooting. The elder Keever picked up the boy, placed him in the pickup and rushed for the Mojave Medical Center where upon arrival the boy was pronounced dead. The body was removed to the O'Donnell Funeral home here Having permission from his parents, the Leider boy had joined his companion in the rabbit hunt and several times the pick up had stopped on the road to permit the boys to hunt. On the last stop the boys had struck out on their own and it was then the accident happened. An inquest was held on Tuesday afternoon at the O'Donnell Funeral Home, the verdict being that the boy had come to his death by accidental means. The body has been shipped to Van Nuys for interment. Landers and Shelby J. Langston, both 24, lost their lives in a collision with a truck tank and trailer at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, 14 miles east of Mojave on Hwy. 466. Force of the collision tore off the right rear double wheels of the trailer and they rolled 300 yds. before coming to rest in the desert. The car, a 1947 Chevrolet was a total loss although the driver, Jim Lee Skaggs, 22, of Senaca, Mo., walked away with a couple of scratches. Both victims had just been separated from the U. S. Army at Camp Stoneman and presumably were headed home according to Highway Patrol Officer, Kenneth De La Marr who investigated, no reason for the crash has been found as yet. Bud Palmer of Bud's Garage, who towed in the wreck, had to use an acetylene torch to release the victims from the wreck. Fire equipment from Edwards A.F.B. was called when a fire started in the wreck from the flames of the torch coming in contact with a quantity of paint carried in the death vehicle. Driver of the truck, which was a owned by Empire Transportation Co., was Charles Roberts Clark of 1893 So. Union Ave., Bakersfield. Edwards ambulance took all victims to the Base Hospital and the two bodies were later removed to O'Donnell Funeral Home by their ambulance.
