O'NEAL Jan. 16, 1934 - Dec. 3, 2001 James Burnswell O'Neal was born in Waycross, Georgia on January 16, 1934 and lost his fight against cancer on December 3, 2001 in Delano, California. He was the son of James Jackson O'Neal and Ellen Toole O'Neal. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where he attended school and worked until he enlisted in the Army in 1953. James received his honorable discharge in 1955 and was placed on disability retirement. Following his discharge from the Army, James attended Draughon School of Radio in Little Rock, Arkansas where he studied Radio Communications and TV Servicing. After graduating from school he was employed by radio station KGNC in Amarillo, Texas from 1957 until 1963. In 1963 James was hired by the United States Information Agency, Voice of America. His first position with Voice of America was at the Greenville Relay Station located in Greenville, North Carolina. While he was working at Greenville, he met and married his second wife, Nancy Mull O'Neal. In 1969 he was transferred by Voice of America to the Delano Relay Station where he remained employed until his retirement April 30, 1995. James was liked and respected by all who knew him well. He will be remembered for many admirable things. Those who worked with him will remember that he liked his job, loved to work on the equipment that he tenaciously would not quit until a problem was solved. His friends will remember that although he was a quiet person, he enjoyed being with laughing, joking, happy people. He greatly enjoyed helping his wife cook and entertain. Friends will also remember that he enjoyed dining out and traveling. That he could cleverly tease and was a good sport when others teased him. That he embraced life. many will remember him as a gentle, polite person who seldom frowned. Instead he shared his nice smile although he lived in constant physical pain. James' family will cherish the memory of his steady, caring, devoted love.We will remember that although we live far apart, there are countless memories of time spent together. As the years went past, there were happy, fun times together and there were worried, stressful times. He was always especially happy when the miles between us did not prevent his attendance at a special event in someone's life. Also, we will remember his pleasure in the antics of many beloved pets and that he enjoyed the flowers, trees, and birds around him wherever he was. James is survived by his wife of 36 years, Nancy O'Neal of Delano, CA; two daughters, Linda Go of Quincy, Illinois and Helena Roberson of Heber Springs, Arkansas; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; one sister, Armethia Crenshaw; and one brother, Robert E. O'Neal both of Jacksonville, Florida. At his request, there will be no services at this time. A private memorial service is planned when his ashes are interred in Morganton, North Carolina at a later date. If you wish to honor the memory of James B.
