Shortly afterwards Mojave's fire alarm horn blared out calling the volunteers to the box nearest the Mojave Motor Co. on Sierra Hwy. in the north part of town. By now, a pall of black smoke hung over the runway at the Mojave Marine Auxiliary Air Station indicating one of the fighter planes based here had crashed. Witnesses said it disintegrated and started several small fires, which were quickly brought under control. Marine Base officials reported that Cap. Marvin B. Stevens, USMC, was instantly killed when the plane, an F-9-F, exploded on impact. Capt. Stevens had been stationed at Mojave and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Stevens of Watsonville, Calif. When the ill-fated plane crashed several pieces were thrown some distance away. One of the larger pieces sailed over the top of Mojave Motor Co. and crashed through the roof of an S. P. Section house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Fostado. The chunk of metal, said by Guido Salvestro to be red hot, went through the roof, continued down through the ceiling, piercing the west wall of the house. Debris was scattered on small children, but no one was injured. A second piece of the plane hit the concrete foundation of a fence at the corner of Cerro Gordo and L Street. This shattered the cement which flew through the air like so many bullets. Again no on was injured, but it was reliably reported that three small children were playing in the yard at the time. Officials of the Marine Base said the plane was on a routine training flight. Posted by East Kern Genealogical Society Courtesy Mojave Desert News, California City, Kern, CA. Published: 28 Nov 1957

So he went to Van Nuys Friday to fetch his family and move them up to make Mojave their new home. Dad and his two boys were in the front car, with the smaller boy asleep in the back seat but David, nine years old, was too excited to sleep, so he sat big eyed in the front seat beside his dad. Mother and the little daughter followed closely behind in a second car. About 10:30 p.m. suddenly Mrs. Singleton saw the front car swerve then a terrible head-on crash as her husband's car and one containing two sailors from China Lake collided 2 miles north of Rosamond. The sleeping boy was thrown oft, the seat and hurt his leg badly; Bob Singleton was taken to the Mojave Hospital with a brain concussion and David, the excited little man, was rendered unconscious as he was thrown against the windshield. In the ambulance which picked him up, the attendants worked feveris! hly without daring to remove him for 3 1/2 hours until at 2:53 a.m. the Grim Reaper took over. His body was taken to the Rainwater Funeral Home in Van Nuys where services will be held with interment in Van Nuys. The two sailors Wiliam M. Savage and Donald F. Fine were both injured and the ambulance took them to the MCAAS hospital from which they were later removed to the hospital at Edwards Air Force Base. Coroner Newman held an inquest on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the O'Donnell Funeral. Home in Mojave. A check at the Mojave Hospital revealed that Mr. Singleton is still a patient in a fair condition while the son, Robert is in satisfactory shape. A .32 caliber automatic kept in the bunkhouse with other guns, used to kill coyotes and other animals around the ranch was listed as the suicide weapon. A note was later found in the bunk house. Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADE/8110 Message Board Post: Article Assists Inyo Sheriff In Identification On Wednesday afternoon we had a visit from C. M. Howard, Sheriff of Inyo County, Independence, California, who was seeking information on an airplane wreck that happened in August or September of 1945. The only clue to possible time of the crash was an August 1945 date on the chute pack as wreckage was scattered for several hundred yards. Looking in the files of Desert News for 1945, we found a story of a lost Navy plane in or around Trona, California which presumably was never found until June12, 1957. This article supplied the missing information needed by the Sheriff to complete identification. Prospector Thad Green, of Immigrant Canyon, which is in the Death Valley National Monument discovered the wreckage while prospecting the Panamint Mountains on June 12. He notified the Sheriff who in turn' called Air Search and Rescue. On Thursday, June 13, Hamiiton Air Force Base asked the Sheriff to go to the scene and check it out. Next day Sheriff Howard and a party went into the rugged country and found parts of a skelton (sic) and scattered wreckage. Reporting his find back to Hamilton Air Force Base. On Thursday, June 20, a party from NOTS is going in with the Sheriff to search for further identification. In the opinion of Sheriff Howard, the pilot died instantly in the crash. Our story in the issue of Sept. 27, 1945, stated that the lost plane was piloted by First Lt. Herbert L. Libbey, of Tomaston,. Maine, who was on a flight from Las Vegas to Mojave.
