Gene was a life-long resident of Kern County. He attended East Bakersfield High School where he served as student body president in 1943-44. Gene married Pat Mills in 1946, and they were married for 59 years. Gene served Kern County for 40 years with the U.S. Forest Service, Kern County Fire Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, where he was captain in charge of search and rescue and substations. Capping his public service career, he served as Kern County supervisor (District 3) for 12 years. Gene was proud to serve Kern County with honesty and integrity and always had the public’s best interest at heart. Gene and Pat retired to the Kern River Valley in 1984, where he remained active in the Kern River Valley Historical Society and the Kern Valley Habitat Club. Gene loved the Kern River Valley where he enjoyed his family and friends, but he was always ready for a spontaneous road trip to visit his daughter and her children in Arizona. Gene is survived by his wife, Pat; son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Terrie Young; daughter and son-in-law, Gena (Peggy) and Gary Harnisch; 10 grandchildren; sister, Joy Bostedt and her husband and family of Idaho ; brother, Jeff Young and wife Kim of Washington; and brother-in-law and good friend, Dan Mills and his wife Jewel of Tehachapi. Mary was born Feb. 20, 1951, in Ross to Vern and Margaret Hodge. She married James Dale Thornton on Sept. 7, 1975, in Anaheim. They moved to Tehachapi 13 years ago to be near family. At the time of her death, Mary was employed as housekeeping supervisor at the Lodge at Woodward West. She was a dedicated employee and although she kept busy with her work, her greatest devotion was to her family. She was a source of incredible strength and unconditional love to her husband, daughter and grandchildren. In every circumstance, she put others’ needs above herself. Mary is survived by her husband, James D. Thornton; daughter, Jamie Weinberg and husband James, both of Tehachapi; grandchildren, Reyna, Reno, Julia and Cody; brothers, Vern Hodge and wife Donna of Eugene, Ore., and Steve Hodge and wife Sandi of Lakewood; nieces, Alycia, Christie and Joy; nephews, Vern, Stuart and Spencer; and great-niece, Alyssa. Morse June 11, 1933 - June 6, 2005 Harry F. Morse, 72, passed away at his home in Tehachapi on July 6, after a short illness surrounded by family and friends. Harry was born June 11, 1933, in Danville, Ark. He served with the reserve to complete eight years of service. Harry began a career with Pepsi-Cola that spanned many years, beginning in Stockton and eventually moving to Bakersfield and Mojave. He married Patricia Sears on Feb. 15, 1976, in Carson City, Nev. They moved to Tehachapi in 1978. Harry loved nature and animals, especially birds. For the past 20-plus years, Harry had been an integral part of the Benz operations. He had been with Paul from the early days, serving as general manager, Paul’s right-hand man and very close friend. He will be remembered as a trustworthy, reliable, steadfast and extremely generous man and an employee whose loyalty and diligence was above reproach. Enough cannot be said about Harry. He had the character and spirit of a man who enjoyed his life, his work and his family. A man of such loyalty and integrity will truly leave a void and be missed by all who know and loved him. Harry is survived by his loving wife, Pat Morse of Tehachapi; children, Shelly and Eugene Williams, Lisa and Robert Royce and Perry Morse, all of Stockton, Kathy and Russ Wynn of Caruthers, and Rick and Jodi Sears of Arlington, Wash.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother, Donnie Morse and wife Vonnie; sister, Addie Rodriquez; as well as a host of special friends. He and his twin brother, Herman, were one of the three sets of twins in the family of eight children. The family moved to Empire, Calif. in 1941. Thurm graduated from Modesto High School in 1949. During the Korean War, he served in the Army and was assigned as a physical reconditioner in charge of neuro-psychriatic patients at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco. He then joined Special Services and played football for the Presidio Red Raiders. Returning from the Army, he graduated from University of LaVerne in 1956 and began a 22-year teaching career. He taught history and PE for 11 years in Southern Californian and 11 years in Tehachapi. After leaving teaching, he engaged in real estate and contracting. Thurm was an avid outdoorsman and an outstanding athlete. He hiked extensively in his younger days and went whitewater rafting for 20 summers in Montana. He was an All American Swimmer at Modesto Junior College. He played football at the University of LaVerne and served as co-captain along with his twin brother. He also played semi-pro football for two years. Thurm served on the Tehachapi City Council in the 70s and founded the Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, the AAUW and Tehachapi Heritage League. He was actively involved in the Tehachapi Community Church. He is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 40 years; daughters, Peggy Loomis, Kathy Mixon, Karen Weldon; son, Daryl Belcher; seven grandchildren; brothers, Marvin Belcher, Melvin Belcher, Roy Belcher, Ken Belcher; sister, Louise Sauls; numerous nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1049 S. Curry St. in Tehachapi. Wood Family Funeral Home handled the arrangements. The ship was docked in the St. Johns, Antigua harbor when a thunderstorm broke out Friday evening according to a spokesman for the U.S. embassy. Quandt was helping the ship's band members cover their instruments when he slipped on the deck and accidentally grabbed a live wire, an embassy spokesman told reporters. Doctors aboard the ship administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and Quandt was rushed to Halvenson's Hospital in Antigua, but he died an hour later, said the embassy spokesman. Quandt's body was flown to Tulsa, Okla. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon in nearby Fairland, Okla. A native of Arkansas, Quandt and his family lived until 1954 in Okay, Okla. They moved to Porterville, where the family was involved in residential development. He attended Porterville and Bakersfield colleges and served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his father, William Quandt, Sr. of Kenai, Alaska; two brothers, Calvin Quandt of Kenai and Howard Quandt of Porterville; a foster brother, Jim Childers of Russellville, Ark.; seven sisters, Sharon Hanke and Sandra Quandt of Anchorage, Alaska; Marjorie Neely and Virginia Van Es of Russellville, Gretchen Haig of Long Beach, Peggy Jullian of Porterville and Phyllis Poyhones of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
