The two other Negro clergymen in the diocese, the Rev. J. H. Pollard and the Rev. Thomas W. Cain, were also present. (Mr. Pollard later became Archdeacon of North Carolina and Mr. Cain lost his life in the Galveston, Texas floods of 1900.) The three of us were asked to speak on the colored work of the Church and to preach Sunday afternoon in Christ Church. We were presented in order of our ages, and I, being the youngest, was called upon last. I was somewhat frightened and lost when my turn came to tell of the colored work, as I had only been on the field about ninety days, but when the talk was concluded, the audience was kind enough to applaud. >From James S. Your posting was dated Sep 1999 so I hope get this messege. I'm researching my wife's family history. Her mother's father was Russell Anderson Cain (1878-1941) who married Lelia E. Mabry (1887-1973). I think that his father was John Webster Cain (1852-1909). If so, then Russell would be a decendant of John Manning Cain. If you have any information that would help I would like to hear from you. Thanks, Mike Shaffer
