The family did move into Indiana about the late 1810's or very early 1820's. We have never found anybody who knew anything of Elizabeth Alice. My gg-grandmother was Lizzie Caroline Cain born about 1884. On her death cert., Thomas L. Cain is listed as her father, but on her SS# record, he is listed as Josiah Elias Cain. She may have been born in Sullivan, that's one birth place listed, but on the SS record, it's Ironton, Mo. Also listed was father's place of birth as Coe, MO., which we can't find. She also may have had a sister Maudie, who may or may not have married a Rice. Lizzie's children were James Sylvester, Cratis Middleton, Everett Van Buren and Mary Esterlee. I wondered if your John Cain had a brother Thomas or Josiah Elias or Elias Josiah. Unfortunately, we've run into a brick wall. Let me know if she fits in or not, I've been ruling out Cain's from all over the country. any info would be great. Thanks for your time and Good Luck in your search. Dona Burnett Alton, Ill.

I don't know what year my Elijah was born, but Eliza NEWHOUSE CAIN was b. c1842. In the 1840 census for Hardy Co., VA, there is a James NEWHOUSE who may possibly have been an uncle of Eliza's (a brother of her father, John T. NEWHOUSE, who was in Hardeman Co. TN by 1830). Next door to James was the following family: Owen CAIN 1 male 5 - 10 1 male 10 - 15 1 male 20 - 30 1 male 50 - 60 1 female 20 - 30 1 female 30 - 40 1 female 60 - 70 I thought it interesting that there was a CAIN family next door to this NEWHOUSE family in Hardy Co. I still haven't been able to connect these CAINs with Elijah. It's especially difficult since I have so little information about him. I'll keep your information in mind and post if I come across any CAIN info that I think might pertain to yours or connect yours to mine. Thanks very much for your response. Brenda

The only reason I thought there may be a connection is that the Newhouse family came from around there according to a previous post of yours. The only information I have on my Elijah is that he was the baseborn son of the widow Mabel Timartha Cain. He was bound over to learn the trade of shoemaker in 1840. This all happened in Warren County, VA. I also know that he was called Elijah Cain, alias Gibson when he was bound over to a Mr. Andrews. I cannot find any trace of him. My great-grandfather was also of child of Mabel's born years later. I have not found his father either. I don't know if this is any help but maybe some details will come together at some point. Gail
