Hi all, Over the past several months, I have sent emails out about the Clapp Cemetery (located in Muscogee County - Columbus, GA) trying to find more descendants whose family members may have been buried there. The cemetery is not being taken care of my the current owners, Georgia Power and we would like to clean the cemetery in an effort to help those descendants find their families. The following people or families have been identified so far: Mary Catherine Skipper John P. Lewis J.F. Cain Sarah Watson Hill Jesse Hill Dicey Coggins Hill Charlotte I. Jones Hill Nancy "Mammy" (Vickery?) Jackson Mary Virginia Jackson Cole John W. Cole Margaret Hood Cole Bird Hopkins Miller Nix Warren Watson There has been a temporary mailing list set up for all of those who are interested in helping with the research and preservation of the cemetery. If you think you might be interested: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClappCemetery/ Please keep in mind we don't know exactly who is buried there or where in the cemetery they are buried. THERE ARE NO RECORDS. Please do not ask me if your family members are there, I don't know. I only have some information on the people listed above and it is limited. Thanks for any support that you can give us this cemetery. Kemis Massey

The following was received from Rootsweb today. =====<Rootsweb Message>=================================================== KLEZ OFF! Viruses and worms are a constant and growing threat and they can destroy your valuable genealogical files. Assuming your computer is clean or that you will never get a virus is foolish. Viruses invade the computers of genealogists every day. The current and relentless attack of the Klez worm, which forges the "from address" continues to fool many RootsWeb users, but this worm is NOT coming from any of RootsWeb's mailing lists or from your editor. It is being sent to you privately by an infected computer (often without the owner's knowledge), using a stolen "From" e-mail address. Klez uses all sorts of subjects lines, many of them appearing to be genealogy-related, which Klez also filches. He was called William "Robert" in some accounts. But since his grandmother's maiden name was Robinson, I suspect, Robinson may be correct. Apparently he and his brother Isaac Newton Cain went to California for the Gold Rush after the death of their mother on 9 Aug 1849. Apparently an account of their trip is in a book by W.S. Green called, "History of Colusa County, California" A few years before his death, this item appeared in the Liberty Missouri Tribune, 26 Dec 1890, "Judge W.R.Cain of Falls City was visiting his son-in-law, Rev J.S.Smith and family last week. Judge Cain was a citizen of Clay County many years ago. His father, Robert Cain and Mr. George Burnett, another pioneer of the county, came here in 1823, coming up the river in an old flatboat from Old Franklin, Howard County. They landed near Randolph." He was called Judge because he was a justice of the peace. According to other records, His mother was Jane Burnett born 1797 in Pitts County, VA and died 3 Jan 1849 in Platte County, MO. Her father was James Burnett married to Margaret Robinson. The George Burnett he came to Howard County may have been his brother-in-law. There is a George Burnett listed as a step-brother to Jane.

Some sources show spelling of last name as Caine and Kain. Martin Cain was born in Tennessee or Georgia by some notes about 1833. Some Census records indicate he was born 10 years earlier. Martin’s father and mother were also listed as being born in Tennessee although other locations show his mother as being born in Arkansas. As near as I can tell George was born in Arkansas about 1852; James was born in Arkansas about 1854; and Reuben was born in Arkansas in 1860. I have information on Reuben, but nothing much on George or James. Martin was in the civil war from 1864 to 1866. He homesteaded near Clearwater, Antelope County, Nebraska in 1886. The homestead was sold in 1893. From there, I can find no trace of Martin. If anyone can help me on this, I would be very grateful.

They migrated to Missouri in 1931 when the natural gas lines were laid from Texas to OK to Kansas and MO. Some of my information is documented and some has just been found in other correspondences and records. The early information was obtained from the LDS Library record # 184820 and from Wayne R. Cain as a result of his extensive searching for his roots (Jonathan not in his line) before he wrote his book. He is no longer living and his books are all sold. I have also been to SC and obtained some documentation from the SC Archives and also from the Charleston SC Library. A lot more work is needed in proving what I have listed, so please use the above info only as a launch pad to prove information. I have a record from SC Archives which is a bill of sale for a young male slave in which Jonathan Cain received $2000 for him. I couldn't put my hands on it to give the name of the slave, but it is in one of my files. Should you want further correspondence on this family, my email is [email protected] Carol Cain Headley

This has been an hectic summer. I can't see that our Michael's are connected. My Patrick (or Michael as he is sometimes listed) settled in Lansing MI when my great grandfather, Michael was about 8 year old. He was, at that time, married to Agnes Mary Meshaw although rumor has it that she was a second wife. Some of your children's names fit, but most do not. Michael, John Francis, Cornelius, Alexander, Mary and Ellen. Second generation Michael's children were John, Franklin, Alexander, Mary Agnes, and Curtis. If you can put them together, it would be great. My personal email is [email protected] and I will be traveling to Lansing Michigan on 21 Aug 2002 if there is anything I can do for you at the Historical Library there, let me know specifics. PKG
Cain cousins, I decided to try to transcribe the information that I found in the museum in Warren Co., Lebanon, OH, about the Cain family. Record of black & Mulatto persons Be it remembered that on the 14th day, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven Cook a black man, aged about thirty seven years (formally owned by Abner Cain as a slave) enters himself as a free negro May 14th 1807 The following negroes (formally the property of (cannot read first name)Cain widow of Jonathon Cain, Vix, Pat, a negro woman aged about fifty years, also a negro woman called Chaney about thirty three years of age with five children whose names are as follows first Dinah a negro girl aged about fifteen years second Dealor a negro girl aged about ten years, third Limbrick a negro boy aged about eight years fourth Barbara a negro girl aged about three years fifth Delilah a negro girl aged about one year, enter themselves as free blacks agreeably to the provisions of an act entitled an act to negotiate black and mulatto persons, Be it remembered that on the 12th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven Jonathon Cain comes and causes to be entered Ceasar a black man who says that the negro has been in the State of Ohio eleven months. -------------------- This entry tells me that Jonathon Cain and his wife were with Abner in Warren Co., OH, in 1807. Sugarcreek Twp., OH, with Levi Allen and Lewis Bingamon. He is offend connected with these two men. He married Elizabeth Paulin 1 Sep 1818 by Samuel Bare J.P. (her family was Quaker) IAbner Cain of Greene Co., died in Clifton, OH, about 1837. If you see anything here that would connect these two men, that would be wonderful. Please let me know. HistoryDaily.com - An Entertaining Look Back By Charles Smith and Trevor Smith July 30, 2002 on this day: In 1864, during the American Civil War, the Battle of the Crater occurred during the Union siege of Petersburg. Facing a Confederate artillery position, the 48th Pennsylvania regiment persuaded General Ulysses S. Grant to allow them to dig a tunnel and place explosives under the Confederate position. Many of these men were miners and were convinced that such an explosion would devastate the rebels. They succeeded in blasting a crater sixty feet wide in the Confederate line. After that, however, everything went wrong. Union solders rushed into the crater, but were disorganized and their commander was in the rear drinking rum. Many of the rank and file were among the first African-Americans to fight for the Union. Once in the crater they became easy targets for the Confederates, who surrounded them. Almost all of the Union soldiers were killed.
