    1. [CAIN] Clapp Cemetery in Muscogee County, Columbus, GA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XOH.2ACIB/2262 Message Board Post: In the 1820's - 1830's Clapp Factory was built on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Muscogee County, GA, now Columbus, GA. It was the first factory in Columbus. Over the years a Clapp Village was built. At some point a cemetery was started on a hill over looking the factory and the banks of the Chattahoochee. Supposedly there is also an American Indian burial area located close to the Clapp Cemetery. In the Clapp Cemetery rests slaves, Confederate soldiers, and the poor workers of the Clapp Factory. As it turns out Georgia Power purchased the Clapp Cemetery in the 1920's. Apparently there weren’t any stipulations as for the care of the cemetery so nothing has been done to preserve it. At one time there was a fence surrounding the cemetery to protect it but over the years it either rotted away or been torn down. There are no official records of the cemetery. However, in the genealogy section of the Bradley Library there are several books but various people who over many years did physical surveys. There are others who through family history have various records or found funeral homes with records showing persons buried in the cemetery. The following link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClappCemetery/?yguid=121009359 was set up so anyone interested can view some of the things we have identified about the cemetery. The info on the families buried at the cemetery is also included. As we get more info it is made available for all that subscribe. There are also links to articles about the Clapp Factory and Cemetery. There are links to sites set up by other individuals who have at one time or another had to fight for either the right to visit their ancestors or keep their cemeteries from being destroyed. Please feel free to look around (I'm not sure whether you have to actually join to look around. But you could unsubscribe after you've looked). My estimate is that the George Cain (son of Martin Cain & Mary (Polly) Shirley) was born about 1854. This would make him to young to be the George you refer to in the 1850 census as having children. There is a good chance these two Cain lines are linked but I don't know where. Thanks for your response and if you ever do find a tie, please let me know.
