    3. Thanks for the responses from Don Tunison-Campbell and others about the possible location of the old Wrangletown Hotel, also known as Allard Hotel, in the Freshwater area. >From what I have heard (family legends mostly) and read, there were, in the late 1800s, three "towns" in what is now described, generally, as the Freshwater area. In Freshwater itself was a hotel and a few other business buildings -- the hotel is gone but several buildings there still survive. At Freshwater Corners, the major trading center, there was a hotel, a couple of saloons, a dance hall (owned by the Graham family) and other buildings. Then in Wrangletown there was even more. Along about 1880, as I understand, people objected to the name "Wrangletown" and changed the name of the community to Garfield. The name Garfield evidently did not stick too well, since even today many refer to the town as Wrangletown. According to an account by Burt Pettengill (in the Humboldt Historian, Nov 1961) the town of Wrangletown was "so named on account of the many quarrels and fighting between the different loggers. They would fight almost to the death but the next day they would shake hands and be good friends." He describes Wrangletown (later Garfield) as consisting of "two or three livery stables, a bowling alley, a tailor shop, cabinet shop, two barber shops, drug store, post office, two grocery stores, three saloons, a restaurant, a hotel and a dance hall." These are his recollections from the 1880-90s probably. He goes on to say that in 1961 there was one store left at the town site. Of course, in those days, logging was the industry in the area. There was a large mill, said to have employed between 1200 and 1500 men. Times change! So I appreciate the help in locating some of what once existed in the area. I encourage any of you interested to post here; very helpful people! Ken Allard
