Surnames: McManus/Hopper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AW.2ADI/1263 Message Board Post: I am looking for information about Frances McManus. In June 1900 Frances (age 11), along with her brother Hubert (age 9) lived with the O'Mara Family (Cornelius and Julia O'Mara) in Pacific Township, Humboldt County, California. According the the 1900 census their parents were from New York (father) and Ireland (mother). Frances' father Frank and brother George were probably working on the coast in lumber. Frances married and this is were we lost her. She remained in Humboldt County. Frank and George, along with their sister Marie are working in Wesport in 1910 according to the census. Frances lost a daughter due to a accidental drowing in the tub. The family story is that Frances froze to death. They were in a wagon or buggy on a road near Redway or Garberville. The axle broke. Frances was left at the wagon while the men went to get help. Upon their return she had died of exposure. I imagine this story must have made the local papers. According to the family she is buried in the Garberville Cemtery. I have found little reference to the place online - any information, location, phone number, etc, would be appreciated. I don't have a good idea on the dates. This probably happened between 1910-1930. She was a young woman when she died. Thank you for your help and direction. Mary
Marykay: I was unable to locate a marriage record for Frances McManus in Humboldt County records. Without a married surname, it is pretty difficult to find a death record for her in Humboldt Country records. My partner and I (Ron Kuhnel, are attempting to photograph all of the headstones in all Humboldt County cemeteries - but have not gotten down to Garberville as of yet. (Bull Creek is as far south as we have gotten). One suggestion: Westport is in the extreme northwest part of Mendocino COunty. Is it possible that she was married in Mendocino COunty? If you could find her listed in the Mendocino County marriage records, that would give us a married surname to use for additional research in both counties! I note that the only records that I find for McManus deaths in Humboldt County was for a James Philip, a lumberman also, died on 31 October, 1921 in Eureka when he was crushed between two logs.
