Never assume. Sorry. Good for your stong willed grandmother. No one at the time photos are taken realizes how precious they will be later. Of the portraits found in Norway, there is one taken of a man and woman and young 3-4ish child wearing a boyish looking sailor style hat. This is the most damaged portrait and the one that causes me the most puzzlement. I don't have a clue who they are. It was taken at Chase & Co., Cooper Bldg, Eureka, California. There is one of a child standing in a very ornate chair, who is wearing a skirt & top with large white cuffs and a very large white collar. I cannot tell if this is a male or female child. I would guess about 3 years old. my Aunt Ann Gross was born in 1894 and my Dad in 1896. The portrait was taken by Kukend_ _ _ Photo. sucessor to Chase & Co. 335 F St. Eureka, California. Another is the one of my grandfather and it appears to have Larson embossed in scrpt at the bottom of the cardboard frame. The one I believe is my grandmother has an embossed printing however only the tops of what appears to be two words is visible. It is written at a slant in the center of the frame. First word looks like the top of a very fancy "C" with decoratation at the initial curve like dots. Second word looks like top of a capital Lui_ _ (both short words). The portrait of them together, which I think was when they got married, has no identifyig studio visible at all. Thank you very much for any assistance you might be able to locate. My great half aunt was named Rosa Ann Brown. She was born in Shasta County, Calif in the 1870s(?). She was the daughter of George Washington Brown and Almeda Brown. Other children of this union were Nanna and Earl. They lived at different times in Round Mtn, Oak Run, Cottonwood, and likely other nearby towns. The family and children moved to Gila Bend and later Tempe, Arizona about 1882. Rosa Ann married Dr. Fenn Hart in Tempe in the 1890s. She died in 1936(?) and is buried in the Double Butte Cemetery, Tempe, Arizona. I have a lot of information regarding locations, names, etc, on Rosa Ann Brown/Hart. Unfortunately, I'm currently at our summer home in Alaska and all my genealogy records are in Arizona. Please let me know if you think "Rosalie A" could be our Rosa Ann. I do remember her being called Rosalie in some of the old records. I have not heard of the names Sheila or Ronald in our family genealogy.
You may have the following already; but here goes anyway-- The following 3 people passed away in Humboldt County: Ruby Maxine Hamilton Branstetter, born 9 Jan 1913 in California, died: 26 Aug 1995, mother's mn = Butler; Hugh Augustus Hamilton, born 9 Mar 1910 in Calif., died 9 Apr 1983; and Ruby Electra Butler Hamilton, born 11 Dec 1890 in Nevada, died: 9 Oct 1989, mother's mn = Bessmer. Noticed that there are only 83 people that show up on the ancestry.com, Calif. death index that died in Humboldt Co. with a mother's mn, a father's surname, or their own surname = Hamilton (from 1940 - 1997). One who knew the inside info. on this family might be able to pick out some more family members here. ((social security #s on the 3 above are: 571027628, 700100882, & 572789009)) On the surname Branstetter, another born in Calif. & died in Humboldt Co. is: Maxine Branstetter Sweet, born: 4 Sep 1905 and died 9 Sep 1985. There are 12 others born in Calif. and died in Humbo! ldt, 5 born other than Calif. who died in Humboldt Co. and 82 who were born in Calif. and died anywhere in Calif. from 1940 - 1997 --- again, knowledge needed to pull out the relevant ones, if any. ----- Original Message ----- From: joan70mo@aol.com To: CAHUMBOL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, June 23, 2003 2:27 PM Subject: [CAHumboldt] Re: family of James Baker Hamilton, to Genzoli This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Andy passed away in 1984 and my dad this year. But as we all know love of history is inherited. I have been doing family research for about 35 years, and study local history as well as being involved with the local genealogy society.I have a web page for Humboldt history, http://www.geocities.com/califgeneclub/humgen.html and have my own genealogy club on line. The business directorys that I have seen have all be published in the Redwood Researcher. There may be more that I am not aware of from that time frame. There were more business card collections than directories from what I have seen. What an amazing find! I am tickled for you to have such a photo. I also have one picture of my great grandmother, she had her photo "made" for christmas one year and then when she saw it she decided she didn't like it and was not going to give them to the kids. So my granmother being a strong minded young woman stole one. Bless her soul. What are the names of the photo studios, perhaps we could be able to tack down a time frame for you if not by business directories, maybe by some other fashion. genzi founder CGC http://groups.yahoo.com/group/californiagenealogy

Surnames: HANSEN MULLEN-GROSS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AW.2ADI/975.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Andrew, Thank you for your help. My message was my attempt at a little saracasm what with so many pages of obituaries. i realize how important they can be for someone researching that surname. By the way in your experience have you seen any business directories for Eureka in the late 1890's and before April of 1901. It is a very long story involving a photograph of a woman I believe to be my grandmother that was sent to my great grandmother in Norway. My grandmother Mary Mullen, arrived in the USA from Ireland in 1893. She went directly to the Freshwater area of Humboldt County where her sister was the wife of Ole Hansen a shingle mill owner operator. She married my grandfather, Martin Gross, in 1894.(He emigrated from Norway in 1886. My grandmother died in 1901. My gr. grandmother also died in 1901 in Norway. Amongst some deeds and photographs were several taken in Eureka, California by two different studios. I would lik to know what years each of the studios was in operation in Eureka. This portrait is the only picture I had ever seen of my grandmother . It only took over 100 years to see her image! The items were found in an overlooked green wooden box and just stored safely in a closet by the varuius leasors of the family farm Grunevik up the fjord from Flekkefjord, Norway. A Genealogical genie in Norway contacted the current residents (not related) and he told her about the box. My genie made a special boat trip to the farm and took marvelous digital photos of everything. My grandfather , great grandmother and gr. gr. grandmother were all born on this property in a very remote (still) and gorgeous area on the fjord. When I saw the portrait of my grandmother, it took my breath away because I could see who my sister, the late Pat Roscoe resembled. Sorry to blabber-I get excited, Helen Mc
