    1. [CAHumboldt] Historic Cemetery Legislation
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Hello, Since 2000 I have been involved in trying to get California legislation enacted that will help the plight of our state's historic cemeteries. In 2000 a Bill was introduced and passed both houses of the legislature (only 5 NOE votes) that would have created the California Historic Cemetery Commission. That commission would have cost almost nothing but would have contributed greatly to the review and assessment of the status of our historic graveyards. In the Fall of 2000, GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS vetoed the Bill even though his office had been consulted as to the Governor's preferences on how the Bill should have been framed. Lately I have been working on portions of existing Bills to ensure that the needs of the historic cemeteries that could be addressed through such Bills are considered. I will be sending out information on a couple of items once they are signed by Governor Davis - if they are not also vetoed by him.... If there are any of you who see a need that may need additional legislation in order to assist the historic cemeteries, please contact me direct at ssilver1951@jps.net. I will try to advise you or otherwise determine if or how such legislation might be addressed. I'd like to thank those who in the past have sent me emails of support. Our California ancestors all repose in California cemeteries. The vast majority of the cemeteries in the state are historic and pre-date the 20th century. It is important that we provide protection and preservation of these places of rest. Together we can make a difference. Sincerely, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state/

    3. Danette: I have an Obit and a Burial Notice for your Sadie E. Sockhoff and also eventually found an obit for her husband, "Sherman." He was especially difficult because his name was not "Sherman" but Ulysses!" (Ulysses S., which probably stands for Sherman). If you will send your surface mail address to me privately, I will forward all three of these. 1. Re: [CAHumboldt] Fieldbrook Records?
    2. Don Tunison-Campbell
    3. Lori: First, let me address a couple of your narrative type questions. You will not find official vital statistics records in Fieldbrook. Fieldbrook is an unincorporated rural area of Humboldt COunty. In California, as in Arizona, the primary source for vital statistics records is at the County government level. Here it will be the Recorder's Office, County of Humboldt, 825 Fifth Street, sixth Floor. VItal Statistics section. Ask for Vicki, she can assist. SIne 1905, a copy of the official record is forwarded to the California state government in Sacramento, Department of Public Health. The Handybook (in your library) will he a copy or use Ancestry's Red Book, for addresses. Also, the City of Arcata would not have vital statistics records even for residents of that City, much less for surrounding rural areas. Although I am not sure what lumber company was logging in Fieldbrook, I suspect that it was the Pacific Lumber Company.. Their company headquarters are in their company town of Scotia, just south of Fortuna (Quite a distance from Fieldbrook). Here a bit of information on your family: BROGI Rotiglio & Giuseppini "Josephine" Buti `1. Rose, born 19 February 1911 at Dows Prarie. (Which is near Fieldbrook) (Delayed Birth Record; Misc. record S-320; Ferndale Enterprise newspaper article; 1920 census). 2. Enes Virginia., born 10 September 1912 at Fieldbrook. (Died 21 January, 1956. (Misc. record Y-248; 1920 census; death record). 3. Edith, born 19 November, 1913 at Fieldbrook (Misc. record 2-339; 1920 census). The above from the book: A Guideline to Births, Humboldt County, 1900 - 1915, Compiled by Marilyn Keach Milota,. The Humboldt County Genealogical Society, January 200. Page 74. 4. Arkisi "Archie", born 22 July, 1916 in the Sunnyside Disstrict, Eureka, (Delayed Birth record 1920 census)/ The last one came from the book: A Guideline to Humboldt County Births 1916- 1929, Page 64. Compiled by Marilyn Keach Milota. November 2002. Marriage: FRANCHESI, Lawrence J., & Edith Rutilia Brogi, 10 February, 1935 at Eureka. This above from the book: 1023- 1938 Marriage Index Humboldt County. COmpiled by Marilyn Keach Milota. February 2001. Page 54. There there is for your Grandfather: BROGI, Pete. Died 8 March 1914. Eureka. Age: 29 years. Born:: Italy. Married. Occupation: Woods. Cause: Crushed between 2 logs. This from the book Humboldt County, California Deaths Abstracts Books 1 & 2, Page 78. Compiled by Marilyn Keach Milota. January, 1993. Lastly, there is the more complete entry as follows: BROGI, Peter. died 8 March 1914 at the Sequoia Hospital, Eureka. Buried: Bucksport Cemetery. Died when he was crushed by rolling logs at the Vance Logging Camp 18 three weeks before. Left a 27 year oild wife and 5 small children. Humboldt Times newspaper articles 9 & 10 March 1914). There is probably more information available, even here at my house. But, I need to go to bed as it is 4 a.m. I guess that our guess of he Pacific Lumber COmpany was wrong!
