    1. Planters House Cemetery, El Dorado County
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Greetings: I have posted a new endangered cemetery report to the California Saving Graves website for the Planters House Cemetery in Shingle Springs, El Dorado County. You may view the report at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state/Planters_House_Cemetery_Report.htm A construction application is being processed for the parcel adjacent to this little cemetery. The applicant's plan shows the applicant's property line taking in one of the family plots of the cemetery that was excepted in a 1929 deed and does NOT belong to the applicant. The 1929 deed also provided for an easement to and from the cemetery and the applicant's plan makes no provision for that access. I would like to ask you to email Supervisor Charlie Paine to ask him to help ensure this application is not approved without providing for an accurate depiction of the applicant's property in relation to the cemetery and to ensure that access remains available. There is a sample email text listed below for your use. I hope you will agree that we need to protect our historic cemeteries and access to them and will email Supervisor Paine accordingly. Thank you, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves *********************************************** Sample Email and Letter Text to bosfour@co.el-dorado.ca.us: Subject: Planters House Cemetery, Shingle Springs (DR04-0010-Williams) Honorable Charlie Paine District 4 Supervisor El Dorado County 330 Fair Lane Placerville, CA 95667 Dear Supervisor Paine: I have learned that there have been problems in the past with construction near this historic cemetery in your county and that a new application for construction near the cemetery has been submitted. I believe that historic cemeteries should be respected and protected as historical and cultural resources of our state's past. Please protect the cemetery and access to it so that future Californians may pay their respects to the California pioneers buried there. Please help ensure that the present project application is processed in a manner that helps to ensure the preservation and protection of this early cemetery. Sincerely, [Your name, address and email address.]

Surnames: barton, learned, romine, myer, meyer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AW.2ADI/1271 Message Board Post: Genealogists, I have been looking for ANY information on my grandmother Winona LaVern Barton for about 5-10 years. Winona would have been born abt 1908 in Bakersfield, CA but no record found of that event. Her mother Elvira Sabrey Meyer, born 10/23/1892 LA California, may have had Winona out of wedlock, so last name at birth is not known. (Meyer, Myer, Romine) She may have died in Reno, NV in the thirties (est. 1933-1938). She left behind two children Norvin Jay Barton, born10/15/29 & Bonsha Ray Barton, born 6/19/1928. The children were taken to nuns in Reno, and later returned to an Oregon orphanage after the mother’s death. (I have searched orphanage records but no aditional help) Winona may have divorced or remarried so last name could have changed at death. Winona & Sam Barton lived in Medford, OR in 1930 according to the census records. Winona married Sam James Barton abt 1926, but he left Winona and the 2 children without any record. I have worked very hard on this, but do not have any more info. I was hoping for any possible record on this event. Thanks, Jay Barton

    3. Hi Don, Thanks for your help. The info I have for William is as follows. Born 13th October 1822 Portsea England to Jane Hodge(s) and James McCallum. He came to Australia c1840. He married Anne McDermott in Geelong, Victoria, Australia March 28th 1844 (It's possible that he and Anne met on the voyage to Australia) William and Anne had 12 children. James b1845 d 1858, Louisa Jane b 1846, William b1848 d 1858, Patrick Lloyd b1849, Peter b1851, Rose Anne b1853, John b1854, Thomas Elliot b1856, Andrew b1858, James b1859 d1859, William b1861 and James Edward b1864. In 1858 the older boys James and William accidently drowned in dam, they named the following sons after them. About 1869 William McCallum deserted his family. He was last heard from in a letter dated April 13th 1870. he doesnt give an address but suggest should his wife wish to contact to do so by writing to him at the Euraka Post Office Humboldt Bay San Francisco California United States America. He also said in this letter that he did not go by his own name. he could have been using his mothers maiden name of Hodge(s). It's believed he died shortly after which would have been c1872 making him about 50 years old. Another thing is he reportedly ran off with his sister inlaw. She was a Mcdermott. I would love any other suggestions as to where to look for his death.
