Hi, I'm new to the List and was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm trying to find information on a Francis Leroy Harper, b. March 28, 1909 in Oregon City, OR and died in ? Humboldt, CA?. He married Winifred Belle Chace July 4, 1930 in Weott, Humboldt Co., daughter of Fred Chace and Mary Jones. They had a child, Bud Harper. That's all I have on this family - and am trying to break the brick wall of what happend to Bud Harper or anything about his father's family. I DO have that Francis and Winifred Harper were killed in an auto accident - I assume near Weott. Are there any cemeteries there or someone who I could contact re: burials of these people? Thank you for any help you can give me on this. Sincerely, Jan James [email protected]
I am letting people know that a new County List for Genealogical Discussion & research have been started in California: CATRINIT [Trinity County]. I expect that as a new list and for a rural county, it may not be as active as some of the others in California, but I believe in time it can be very helpful. Subcribing is by sending an e-mail message with the word "subscribe" as the only word in the body of a message with no subject to: (mail mode): "[email protected]" (digest mode): "[email protected]" Posting queries is by subscribers is to: "[email protected]" where "caxxxxxx" is the list name ["catrinit"] I would like to announce the startup of this new list so that people with an interest in genealogy in Trinity County can be made aware of it. I hope that you can include a reference to it in the Trinity County GenWeb site. Thanks again. Sincerily, Edward, Sr.

Hello. I am looking for information on Burdett "Bert" Baird born 1880-1881 and raised and Humboldt County, Calif. I have information on his descendants but would like to trace his roots. I believe his father was Edward J. Baird of Vermont and his mother was Mary Hunter. Does anyone have any information on this family? Or does anyone have access to an 1890 Humboldt County Census that may show this family? I believe Mary Hunter remarried to a Chandler because Bert has two half brothers, Art and William Chandler, and a half sister, Mrs. Carrie Marshbank of San Francisco. I would be happy to share the information I have. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Sherri [email protected]

I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; [email protected] and ; [email protected] I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.

Thanks for the responses from Don Tunison-Campbell and others about the possible location of the old Wrangletown Hotel, also known as Allard Hotel, in the Freshwater area. >From what I have heard (family legends mostly) and read, there were, in the late 1800s, three "towns" in what is now described, generally, as the Freshwater area. In Freshwater itself was a hotel and a few other business buildings -- the hotel is gone but several buildings there still survive. At Freshwater Corners, the major trading center, there was a hotel, a couple of saloons, a dance hall (owned by the Graham family) and other buildings. Then in Wrangletown there was even more. Along about 1880, as I understand, people objected to the name "Wrangletown" and changed the name of the community to Garfield. The name Garfield evidently did not stick too well, since even today many refer to the town as Wrangletown. According to an account by Burt Pettengill (in the Humboldt Historian, Nov 1961) the town of Wrangletown was "so named on account of the many quarrels and fighting between the different loggers. They would fight almost to the death but the next day they would shake hands and be good friends." He describes Wrangletown (later Garfield) as consisting of "two or three livery stables, a bowling alley, a tailor shop, cabinet shop, two barber shops, drug store, post office, two grocery stores, three saloons, a restaurant, a hotel and a dance hall." These are his recollections from the 1880-90s probably. He goes on to say that in 1961 there was one store left at the town site. Of course, in those days, logging was the industry in the area. There was a large mill, said to have employed between 1200 and 1500 men. Times change! So I appreciate the help in locating some of what once existed in the area. I encourage any of you interested to post here; very helpful people! Ken Allard
Hello All, I'm new to this list, and I wanted to let you all know that I'm interested in the Humboldt County Bartow lines. They are connected to the Asa White family. John Bartow married Saphronia White before coming with Saphronia's father Asa White to Humboldt County in 1850. The Palmer family comes in when Josephine Laura Bartow married my ggrandfather, George Arthur Palmer, Sr. in 1905. Soon afterwards, my Palmer's of Humboldt moved to Tulare County. I have most of these lines mapped out, but I'm interested in any stories or other information anyone may have about these families that will allow me to get to know my ancestors a bit better. Thanks, Stephen M. Palmer <[email protected]>

Just thought I'd say 'Hi' :) Karen: I simply don't know. I will ask a friend this week! Although our last name is Tunison-Campbell rather than Tunison-Campbel, I am somewhat startled that there is anyone with even a similar name! Never heard of anyone else until now. My wife, Jeanne, used to work at the Humboldt County Courthouse (She was a Sr. Felony Deputy District Attorney for many years). And a good Deputy DA, so good and so " ", that the DA got rid of her. Regards, Don Tunison-Campbell
After reading about the Wrangletown Hotel I am hopeful that somebody can answer a question for me. I know that the old mill town of Falk is/was at the end of Elk River Rd., and that there is a gate beyond which the property is owned by the lumber company. I have been down that road and found that it branches to two different gates. The right branch crosses a creek and climbs the side of a hill. The left continues on a ways, then bends left before a small climb up a hill to an archery camp. Can anyone tell me which branch led to the old mill town? Thanks, Karen Woodward in Davis, CA PS... Hi, Abbie! You've got me thinking about this line again so I joined this mailing list. Don; My mother says she knows a Tunison-Campbel at work (Co. Courthouse, but a lousy genealogist). Just thought I'd say 'Hi' :)

Allard > Fair Oaks CA Ken: There is a web site, put up by kids in a school in he area. I forget the URL. There is also a book about Wrangletown, also contains recieie!. Wrangletown is now called Freshwater. A local Historian (Ray Hillman) told me that the name was changed at the instance of a group of local housewives, who held a meting on the subject of the name! They were sick of "Wrangletown." The hotel was torn down about 20 to 30 years ago. I spoke to Matina Kilkenney, he Research Archivist at the Humboldt Historical Society last Friday, on your behalf. She found a couple of notebooks with old photos of Wrangletown, but none of the pictures had any building identified as the Wrangletown or Allard Hotel. A friend of min, a retired Eureka Fireman, is also working on the problem for us. He intends to contact a retired noted photographer Sam Swanlund, to see if he has any photos that can identify the hotel. Sorry I am so slow. Regards, Don Tunison-Campbell Eureka, Humboldt County.

Wanted: the location of the old Wrangletown Hotel, in the Freshwater area. This hotel was also known as the Allard hotel, operated by Richard and Ellen (Goble) ALLARD. Richard and Ellen were married in 1871, and Richard died in 1898, so this operation was within that time span, possibly continued later by the family. Primarily a boarding house, they served dinners on Sundays which attracted people from Eureka (I am told).. Any help appreciated! Kennett I. Allard Fair Oaks CA
