Lee - Awesome stuff. Thanks very much. I'm looking at Eudys and making Cagle connections! John P. S. A geographical note - Richardson Creek is in the NE section of present-day Union Co. It would have been across the Rocky River from the Big Lick section of Montgomery/Stanly Co, NC. And in the New Salem Twp of Union Co, NC. John -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2003 12:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [CAGLE] David Cagle and Elizabeth "Betty" Stogner John, these are the notes I have compiled. None are documented personally by me; however, it should give you a point of reference for your research if that is your interest. Should you discover something new, let me know. Lee Cagle, Okla City Children of Elizabeth Stogner and David Cagle are: 2 i. George2 Cagle, born 1808 in Montgomery/Stanly Co., NC; died in Marshall Co., AL. He married Millie Hinson Abt. 1832 in Montgomery/Stanly Co., NC; born 1814 in Montgomery/Stanly Co., NC; died in Marshall Co., AL. Notes for George Cagle: The second Cagle land entry in Anson County was on Richardson Creek to George Cagle on 6 May 1834. His request was for 25 acres but, the survey showed the tract to contain 21 acres. Referring back to the 1833 land grant of David Cagle, Jr, George's brother, it might be noted that tract was not surveyed until Jan 20, 1835, one day prior to George's survey, and that George served as a chain carrier for David's survey. Their lands apparently lay in the NW corner of present Anson Co., near the point where Richardson Creek joins Rockdy River. George probably was the oldest son of David Sr of Anson County. The Mt Tabor Church Cemetery located in Marshall Co., AL, just East of the Morgan County line contains a row of large slab type Horizontal tombstones of Cagle plots, perhaps the resting place of George and Milly Hinson Cagle. One of the stones (the only one marked) is that of Sarah Criscoe Cagle, 1849-1874, first wife of John Hampton Cagle 1844-1895. It seems likely that John Hampton Cagle would have placed his first wife in the same cemetery with his parents. 1860 Marshall County, AL: Western Division Guntersville P.O. #26/261 Cagle, George age 44, b. David Jr Cagle, born 1810 in Montgomery Co., NC; died Bet. 1847 - 1850 in Morgan Co., AL. He married Nancy Unknown Abt. 1834 in Montgomery Co., NC; born May 1805 in Montgomery Co., NC. Notes for David Jr Cagle: The first Cagle land entry #1635 in Anson Co., NC was on Rocky River, on July 9, 1833, to David Cagle, Jr. believed to be born c. 1810-1840s, whose father, David Cagle Sr., c.1780s-1840s, also was a resident of Anson County. The chain carriers were brother, George Cagle, c. 1808-1860s, and John Nance, whose land adjoined that of David Jr; note that the next Cagle land entry in Anson County was to George Cagle in 1834, also adjoined the John Nance property, with the watercourse given as Richardson Creek. This would suggest the Cagle grants were near the point where Richardson Creek runs into Rock River. The Warrant of Survey, 6 May 1834 was for 50 acres, his actual survey showed only 17 acres in the tract. At the time of the 1830 census, David Jr was still living in the household of his father, David Sr., in 1830 Anson County as follows: David Jr probably one of the two oldest sons, enumerated in the 20-30 age bracket, i.e., born 1800-10 era. The other male in that bracket was his brother, George, born c. 1808, who served as one of the chain carriers in the survey: 1830 Census of Anson Co., NC: Kagle, David 1221201-1120001. David Jr apparently bought land in Anson sometime between 1830 and 1833, since his survey showed that his land grant adjoined his own. It seems certain David Cagle Jr left NC between 1835 and 1837, and moved to Stewart Co., GA: 1840 Census of Stewart Co., GA Kagle, David 10001-30101. The female in the 10-15 age bracket probably was a daughter of David's wife by her first marriage. This family appeared in the 1850 census on Morgan Co., AL, though without David who apparently, died before the census. 1850 Census of Morgan Co., AL Household #310 Cagle, Nancy 35 b. GA Living nearby were George Cagle, household #323 and Michael Cagle, husehold #309, both brothers of David Jr, deceased, both of whom were in Anson County., NC in the era of the 1833-1835, and who moved to Morgfan Co., AL about 1845. Nancy Cagle, age 35, probably a widow with one child, Patsy, when she married David Jr in NC in the early 1830s; her age in 1850 was actually 45, rather than 35, as can be seen from the 1900 Census of Navarro Co., TX (below). Nancy's son, Pinkney Cagle, appeared in the 1870 Morgan Co., AL census and in the 1880 Limestone Co., AL census, before moving to Navarro Co., TX in the 1880s. In 1900, was enumerated as follows: Cagle, Pink 63 b. AL May 1837 (actually born in 1842, & was age 58) Frances 46 " Aug 1853 Elmer 18 b. AL Jun 1881 Luther 16 b. AL Jan 1884 David 14 b. NC May 1805 (mother of Pink) David, a young man in his 20s, migrated from Stanly/Anson County region of North Carolina to Stewart Co., GA about 1837 and is known to appear twice in the records of Stewart Co., GA 1840 Census of Stewart Co., GA: Kagle, David 10001-30101 Page 111 This listing shows David and wife were in the 20-30 age bracket, and they had one female in the 10-15 bracket, three females in the under 5 bracket, and one male in the under 5 bracket. The only surviving tax list for Stewart County from this era, that of 1841 indicates David Cagle did not own land, but paid only the Poll Tax in District 31, amounting to $.31. District 31 was organized in the Land Lottery of 1827. As nearly as can be determined, David does not appear again in Georgia records, but died either, just before or just following the birth of his son David in 1847 but, certainly before the census of 1850. His widow, Nancy Cagle is found in the 1850 census in Morgan Co., AL.
