    3. Southern Illinoisan, December 31, 2001 Emma Brown DE SOTO Emma Brown, 88, of De Soto, passed away at 12:02 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2001 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Murphysboro. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at Meredith Funeral Home with Revs. Chris Hottensen and James Wright officiating. Interment will be held in De Soto Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, De Soto, or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home. Emma was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Marion to Charles and Ella (Watson) Cagle. She married Floyd Phillips on Sept. 11, 1932, in Marion. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1978. Then she married Oscar Brown on Oct. 5, 1984, at Energy. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1997. Four brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Myrtle Jones of Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces and nephews including Karla Jo Yates of Energy; and several great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church, De Soto, the Anna Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Herrin, where she was a member for over 50 years. Emma had worked as an licensed practical nurse at Doctors Hospital and Holden Hospital in Carbondale for many years.
