    1. Re: [CAGLE] RE: Please add me to the list
    2. Susan, William Ulysses Cagle was born Feb. 13, 1869 in Cleveland, Tennessee. His parents were Peter and Elizabeth Cagle. He had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. According to age they were: Marion, Evaline, Henry, Becky, Jake, John, Nancy, and then William. He had 3 sons by his first wife, whom he later divorced. One son died when he was small; one drowned at the age of 21; the third son is Chester Cagle who lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. William married Daisy Aline Farris on Aug. 18, 1900, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where their first four children were born. In 1908 they moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Seven children were born in Memphis. He was around 6 ft tall, slender, had black hair, brown eyes and wore a mustache. When Dot was about 2 1/2 years old she wanted Daddy to shave his mustache off. He always told her he would but didn't. One day she asked him and he told her he would. He did, and when she saw him she cried "No, No, No, put it back", and would not have anything to do with him for several days. He did look funny without it. He was a carpenter, painter and paperhanger. Everyone liked him. He was a good father and husband. He made good money in the summer, but during the winter his income was low. He always stocked food up for the winter. He would buy a barrel of flour, one or two hundred pounds of sugar, vegetables to can and fruit for jelly and preserves. At Christmas he sold Christmas trees and holly wreaths. When the children were small he would buy candy, and we would sit around the fire at night while he played his violin, told stories and ghost stories. The neighbor children enjoyed it too. In the summer we would gather on the porch to listen to his playing and his stories. He was the one who would get up at night if we had had dreams or became ill. Of course Mama would get up if we were ill, but he was always the first one to reach us. He always rocked the babies to sleep at night. He was very affectionate, and we would sit in his lap most anytime, and he would hug and kiss us. He could be stern too; however, he didn't do much spanking. He would talk to us and look so sad that we would have rather had the spanking. He didn't drink, but always kept some whiskey in the house. If any of us had colds he would make us a hot toddy, and he always made eggnog at Christmas, and everyone that came to the house at Christmas had a cup of it. He died on May 3, 1935. He had some kind of Liver trouble. It could have been Cancer, but we don't know. He was almost blind when he died. We had his funeral at home. He knew so many people and had so many friends. Even the negroes in the neighborhood came to see him and brought flowers out of their yards. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetary in Memphis, TN. I have considerably more on his second wife and their children, however, very little on Cecilia Rogers and her children. I would be happy to exchange additional information.
