First of all there are many Everett Smith's. And the father of the Preston Smith you mention was an Everett Smith b. 1823 d. 1853, who married Mary Jane Dunn. CENSUS: 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Lawrence Co., MS. p. 431; family #479. Everett Smith age 27 b. Ms.m wife M. J. age 23 b. Ms. children: F. E. female age 3 and S. P. male age 1. Image 71 of 89. His name was Samuel Preston Smith b. 18 Sep 1849 and died 26 Jan 1886. Mary Jane Smith remarried and appears on the next census like this: CENSUS: 1860 United States Federal Census Record Name: Samuel Smith Age in 1860: 11 Birth Year: abt 1849 Birthplace: Mississippi Home in 1860: Not Stated, Lawrence, Mississippi Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Monticello Value of real estate: Household Members: Name Age James Hudnal 30 Mary Smith 33 Frances Smith 12 Samuel Smith 11 Lenora Smith 8 Randolph Hudnal 2 Hudnall dies in 1862 in the Civil War. I didn't find her yet in the 1870 census, but the children looked like this: CENSUS: For 1870 Lincoln Co., MS. has the children. S.P. Smith (which is Samuel Pearson) and his sister L. Smith (Lenora) and two half brothers, E. Hudnall age 11 and J. Hudnall age 9; living in the home of J. E. Harper age 55 and his wife A. Harper age 45. Census taken 8 Aug 1870. Then Mary Jane Smith Hudnall evidently remarries a Carroll Bardwell and the next census we find her: CENSUS: 1880 Lincoln Co., MS. - Ellison Hudnall age 21 now back living with his mother Mary Bardwell age 53 and her husband Carroll Bardwell age 35. All born in Ms. Census take 5 June 1880. CENSUS: 1880 United States Federal Census Record Name: Mary Bardwell Age: 53 Estimated birth year: abt 1827 Birthplace: Mississippi Occupation: Keeps House Relationship to head-of-household: Wife Home in 1880: Beat 1, Lincoln, Mississippi Marital status: Married Race: White Gender: Female Spouse's name: Carroll Bardwell Father's birthplace: NC Mother's birthplace: MS The Mary Anna/Alma/Alina who is the Mary Ann Cagle that married another Everett Smith b. 1809 d. 1836 is my line. The reason I know for sure on her and this Everett, is he was murdered and she remarried in 1837 my 2nd g-grandfather, James Mitchell Pierce. She is the mother of my g-grandfather, William Randall Pierce (1844-1906). Her children with this Everett Smith are recorded in the PIERCE family bible that my cousin in Houston has. The children were: Lot, Sarah, Amanda, Elizabeth and Issac SMITH. I have seen the Bible, and I didn't find out who the SMITH children belonged to until 1996. When John Paul SMITH, a noted and reliable SMITH researcher of Brookhaven, Mississipi answered my inquiry. You can contact me off these pages if you like and we can share more on what parts of the family you need. Leslie Pierce Royce A Texas Rose Living in the Pacific NW Vancouver, WA.
Leslie: Do you have anything indicating Anna Cagle Smith Pierce was "Mary" Anna? Some researchers have misinterpreted the marriage bond language "...doth marry Alina (or Anna) Cagle..." to be " ...Mary Aline Cagle", confusing the words "marry" and "Mary". (Since her father gave permission for the marriage as "Anna", I presume her name was "Anna", not "Alina".) It definitely was not shown as "Mary". I have found nothing in the records even suggesting her name was "Mary". After death of Everett Smith, Anna married "Mitchell Pearce" 14 Sep 1837 as "Annie Smith". M.A. Causey Jackson, MS
