These are my notes which I have assembled from the various writings of John G Cagle and others. The ancestry of Henry Cagle has not been established with complete certainty, but it would seem that he was the youngest son of old David Cagle, who moved from PA to NC in the 1754-55 era, and who lived near Henry in old Mecklenburg in the 1780s. Not all researchers would agree with this assessment, however, and there are those who feel that Henry could have been son of George Cagle 1750-1825, of adjoining Stanley Co., NC and thus a grandson of old David. The 1790 census shows that Henry had 4 sons and no daughters. In 1800, he had three sons and 2 daughters. Then in 1810, he has one son and two daughters or a daughter and a 2nd wife in his household and two sons, Henry Jr. and David living nearby. In 1820 Henry Sr. moved across the Rocky River into Montgomery Co., NC and that census is lost. Sons, Henry Cagle, Jr. and George Cagle continued to live in Cabarrrus County until they moved to Hardin Co., TN, George in 1826 and Henry Jr. in 1828. Henry Cagle, Sr, moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1832 and is thought to have died there abt 1838. The following deed transaction confirms the marriage of Elizabeth Wagoner and Henry Cagle: Lincoln Co; NC Deed Book 20: 104-30 August 1800, Heirs of Conrad Wagoner (d.25 Mar 1799) quit their claim to the land; William Christopher, Conrad (JR) and Michael, his sons; Henry Keagle, Jacob Zieger, Jacob Hartle, Bulser Hofman, his sons-in-law; Eva Wagoner, widow, all sign for the 204 acres contract purchased 1 Feb 1785. Conrad Wagoner, Sr., an early German settler on the South Fork of the Catawba River, died and left a will in Lincoln, present Catawba, County, NC in 1796; then, in 1800, a tract of his land in Lincoln County was sold in order to satisfy the claims of his heirs, who according to the contents of the 1800 document, included his widow, his sons, and his sons in law. The deed, which appears in Lincoln County Deed Book 20 pages 104-06, reads as follows: April Court, A. D. 1800 This Indenture made the 30 day of August A D 1800 between William Wagoner, Christopher Wagoner, Conrad Wagoner, Michael Wagoner, Henry Keagle, Jacob Ziger, Jacob Hartle, Balser Huffman and Eva Wagoner, widow of Lincoln County in the state of North Carolina of the one part and John Wilfong of the county and state aforesaid of the other part: Witnesseth that the said Wm., Christr, Conrad & Michael Wagoner & Henry Keagle, Jacob Hartle, Jacob Ziger, Balser Huffman and Eve Wagoner for and in consideration of the sum of $150 dollars to them in hand paid by the said John Wilfong the receipt whereof they and each of them doth hereby acknowledge, have given, granted, bargained and sold and by the presents doth give, grant, bargain Sell alien & confirm unto the said John Wilfong his heirs & assigns for ever all that tract and parcel of land situate lying & being in the county of Lincoln in the state of No. Carolina and on the waters of the South Fork Catawba River and on the Ease sid of said River Bounded as follows vis. Witness: John Dickson Henry Cagle b. 1760-65 transaction in 1893, Cabarrus Co., Deed Book l, pg 62 This Indenture made this nineteenth day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Three, between Henry Cagle of Cabarrus County, State of North Carolina of the one part and Margaret Green of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth: That for the consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds to him in hand paid at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof the said Henry Cagle doth hereby acknowledge him satisfied contented and paid hath give, grant, bargain, sell alien and confirm unto her the said Margaret Green, her heirs and asssigns firm unto her the said Margaret Green, her heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the county aforesaid containing one hundred and seventy acres and lying on the Lick Branch, a brancy of Rock river including Thomas Winchester's old improvement and being an entry of said Winchester's to wit: Beginning at a post oak on Archibald White's Corner and runs north to said W#hite's Corner Blackoak, thence continues said course to a post oak saiid White's corner in James Armstrong's Lane, thense East down to an Ash in William Winchester's line thence South East down will Winchester's line to an Ash on the bank of the branch, thence west to the beginning. In witness whereof the said Henry Cagle hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year above written. Singned, Sealed and Delivered in presence of: William Polk and Joseph Howell. his mark Henry (HK) Cagle. The exact location of Lick Branch has not been determined; however, it is a tributary of Rocky River in the SE portion of Cabarrus County, perhaps in District 14 of old Mecklenburg County where Henry lived at the time of the 1790 Mecklenburg Census. In 1811, Henry Cagle, Sr sold a 120 acre tract of land to his son Henry Jr., for the sum of $200; the deed, which was witnessed by John Polk and David Cagle, another of Henry Sr's sons, indicated that the tract lay on the east sside of Rocky River in Cabaruss Co., presumably in District 12 of old Mecklenburg County. The deed mentions that Henry Jr was to possess the rights to "all the mines and minerals". This terminology, which is absent from the pre 1800 Cagle deeds of the region, serves to demonstrate the impact of the Reed Gold Strike in drawing attention to the mineral wealth of the area. Cabarrus County was formed from the NE portion of Mecklenburg County in 1792, and included within it's boundaries those four Cagle families which had been enumerated in Mecklenburg in the 1790 census. By the time of the 1800 Cabarrus County census only two of those families were still living in the area. Henry Cagle b. 1760s was a lontime resident of Cabarrus County and remained there until after the 1810 census. As nearly as can be determined, he moved to Montgomery County during the 1810s and was still living there at the time of the 1830 census. The Cabarrus county census of 1810 and 1820 suggest that Henrys three sons were named Henry Jr., George, and David. A fourth son, listed in the 1790 Mecklenburg County census as born 1774-90 was not listed in Henry's household in the 1800 census, nor does he appear in the 1810 and 1820 census of Cabarrus County. The identity of this fourth son, if indeed he survived to adulthood, has not been established in census records of NC. \ Centain Cagle researchers, though apparently without definite proof, have variously suggested that his name was Martin, Charles of Peter. Most of the family moved to Hardin Co., TN in the 1820s. Henry Sr arrived in Hardin Co by 1832.. He filed for vacant land in Hardin County in 1837, but never completed the process to get title to the land. This family also, lived in Montgomery and Cabarrus Counties for several years before pulling up stakes for Tennessee. There were five Cagles listed in the 1833 Census of Hardin Co., TN, the numbers represent the order in which the census taker wrote down the names. They were: No. 430, Henry Cagle; No. 431 George Cagle; and No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. Nos 430, Henry and No. 431 George are the sons of David, b. 1728, Germany. No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr was the son of Old Leonard Kegel. His survey for land in Hardin Co., TN was dated 3 Jul 1837. About 1838 most of the Cagle family in Hardin County, Tennessee moved to New Madrid Co., Mo. It was a very easy flatboat ride down the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers from Hardin to New Madrid. Henry Cagle, Jr and his brother George Cagle, both originally from Cabarrus Co., NC, and several other relatives made the trip abt 1838. The 1840 census shows: Henry Cagle 00101001-0100101 and Elizabeth Cagle 011-111001 Elizabeth was the widow of George Cagle who was killed when a tree fell on him while clearing land and building a cabin. Elizabeth and her children moved back to Hardin County in 1841 and are enumerated in the 1850 census for that county. Henry Cagle Jr. and his son George Cagle were enumerated in the 1850 census of New Madrid Co., Mo. The other Cagles in New Madrid were from the Perry-Decatur Co., TN area. Lee, Your response was great as usual. I recognize some of that information as being my work from years past. I have a comment or two and perhaps a correction that should be made. I have never seen any evidence that Henry Cagle Jr., 1780-1857, was the son of George Cagle, d. 1825. On the other hand Henry Sr. and Henry Jr. both lived in Cabarrus Co. and had land transactions together. Both moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1830. Based on the information that I got from John G. years ago, I also have assumed that Elizabeth Conrad was the wife of Henry Cagle Sr (.1760-1865?). ( I think a more accurate birth date for Henry Sr. is probably ca 1760 since we know his son Henry Jr. was born in 1780, died 1857. Do we know the approximate ages of Conrad Wagoner's children? Is it possible that Elizabeth Conrad was married to Henry Cagle, Jr. 1780-1857? I'll see if I can find any census information on some of these people. The last paragraph below is obouvously my work as there is information there that could be known only to me. However there is an observation or two included that is not mine. The first sentence following is from below: "There were five Cagles listed in the 1833 Census of Hardin Co., TN, the numbers represent the order in which the census taker wrote down the names. They were: No. 430, Henry Cagle; No. 431 George Cagle; and No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. Nos 430 Henry and No. 431 George are the sons of David, b.1728, Germany. No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr was the son of Old Leonard Kegel." It is my opinion from all the information that I have seen that No.430 Henry and No. 431 George were sons of No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. This Henry Cagle, Sr. was born ca 1760, after the probable death of "Old" Leonard Cagle, and was assumed to be the youngest son of David Cagle, 1728-1790's. The two other Cagles that were in Hardin Co., TN in 1833 were No. 608 Henry Cagle and No. 610 James Cagle as shown on the Tax List. They were gone form Hardin Co. before 1840 and apparently surfaced in DeKalb Co. AL that year. Both were enumerated in Hancock/Winston Co. AL in 1850.
