    3. Nancy: No, the Boxwood (Buxus) is not native to Arkansas. The Boxwood is not native to the Americas. They are native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, specifically the Bonin Islands, south of Japan. They are probably more properly classified as a schrub rather than a tree. They are sometimes used as hedges but, most often as ornamental schrubs. They have roundish leaves of dark green upper side and a much lighter underside. The clippings after trimming are usually burned or disposed of in someway to prevent poisoning. They cause extreme digestive irratation which usually results in death. They are extremely dangerous to grazing animals. The Boxwood was imported and said to be one of the favorites of Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson primarily as ornamental schrubs. I saw them at both Mt Vernon and Montecello(sp) in abundance. Lee Cagle Moore, OK ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
