Sandra, thanks for responding. I finally found the story. As I understand it Chief Charlie Mont Zoma Cagle was in reality Pleasant Cagle, b. 1820-1830. I do have two Pleasant Cagles, one born in 1842, the other in 1853. I am not aware of either being part Cherokee, though, they well could have been. My Pleasant Cagle was the son of Henry b. 1794 and Betsy. He served in the Civil War on the side of the South. Notes indicate he served in three different CAV units from TN, having enlisted from McMinn Co (I think this is McMinnville, Warren County, TN) on 1 Mar 1862 and was captured on 4 Jul 1863. There is a remark "Gone Union". Some captured Rebel Soldiers were paroled after signing oaths of allegiance and ordered to remain in the North until the conclusion of the war. This Pleasant was listed on the 1870 US Fed Census of Williamson Co., Illinois. Could this be your Pleasant Cagle? Lee Cagle Moore, OK I finally found it and it does present a bit of a problem.
