Hughes dated 29 July 1866. I note Samuel was taken prisoner during the Civil War and repatriated (discharged) from prison on May 8, 1865, a little more than a year before the above marriage. His second marriage to Sara E. Ray, daughter of Union Army Captain James and Sarah E. Ray, never occurred until September 14, 1874, almost 10 years later. According to Gerolyn Gordan, this Samuel Cagle and Mary C. Hughes, first supposed wife, appeared in the 1870 Census of Saint Francis County, Arkansas with wife Mary along with two daughters, Mary, born 1868 in Tennessee, and Sarah, born 1870 in Arkansas. Gerolyn surmises that since Benjamin Franklin Cagle Jr and wife, Anna (Cook) were nearby and the ages and birthplaces fit, it seems certain they were sons of Benjamin and Parthena. In my opinion, I believe this was the case. Also, Benjamin Jr married Anna Cook in Alabama abt 1868 and moved to Tennessee. I note Samuel and Mary C. Hughes were living in Tennessee at that time because Mary, Samuel and Mary's first daughter was born there in the same year. Is this coincidence or didBenjamin follow Samuel to Tennessee. It isn't clear which, Samuel or Benjaminmoved to Arkansas first but, they both end up there living near each other. I think this is more than coincidence. Also, Samuel's and Mary's children were named Mary and Sarah which are the names of two of Samuel's sisters. There is a pattern here, remember Augustus also, named two of his daughters for sisters Caroline and Laura. Samuel named another of his daughters by wife #2, Frances, another sister. William Marcus "Jackson" named two of his daughters for sisters, Susan and Florence. I note too, the names are not repeated by any of the brothers so, it was consciously intended. It also, indicates they remained in contact with each other over a period of years at least to the extent that they knew the names of the other's children because none of the sister's names were repeated by other brothers. Have I convinced you? Maybe, I am just too suspicious because of Ben Jr and Augustus' escapades. Let me know what you find out. I am very curious about the two daughters of Samuel's by Mary C. Hughes, particularly if she died. Lee Cagle Moore, OK P.S. Maybe we will get some information as to Samuel's whereabouts for the 10 yr span between the time he was released from prison and his marriage to Sarah E. Ray. We may also, learn what prompted his move to Washington (if not for the fact, it is about as far as you can go from Arkansas). Samuel may have been the first to cut and run without benefit of a divorce, setting the example for Benjamin and Augustus. Or as you said, Mary may have died but, if this is the case, what became of the children Mary b. 1868 in Tennessee and Sarah b. 1870 in Arkansas. --------- End forwarded message ---------- ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
