He was married first to Mary taylor, 1843-1890, who was the mother of all his children. After Mary's death, he married Sarah A. Duke, but there were no children of this union . The Children were as follows: 1. John Dave Cagle, born Sep. 18, 1867; died Sep. 1, 1889. 2. Aletha Jane Cagle, Married John Hamilton. Children were Lucy, Julie, rosetta, Loy, and Vela Hamilton . 3. Susan E. Cagle , Married Jim Dave Cagle, a cousin. Note them listed as James D. and Susan E. Cagle, in 1900 and 1910 Decatur.
