Fitzgerald says he is 55 yrs. old, knew Peter Cagle (Evaline's father) who lived in Hamilton county for about 10 years. He claimed to be Indian & resembled Indians. He was 50 when he knew him. He fished, & hunted a lot, was a shoemaker & a merchant. He passed as a white man, but people considered him part Indian. He spoke the Indian language to me & told me how the Indians did when he camped with them. (signed not with an X). Testimony of S. Lawson who is sixtysomething years old says that Evaline Bales father was of mixed blood, & S. Lawson knew him around 45 years. He lived in Bradley County when they knew each other. Said there were no Indians at that time living together as a tribe. Said he was expecting money from the government as an Indian. He was a blacksmith & farmer, recognized white man & voter.
