Tom & List, As some of you on the list know Coble's, settled in North Carolina as did the Cagle's. Our families and the Coble's, lived among each other. Both being German & understanding each other made it easier to become friends. Charles Cagle Sr; came to Hickman Co; Tn; in the early 1800's. Tom's ancestor was Thomas Cagle Sr; a son of Charles Sr. Mine is through the other son of Charles Sr; Charles Jacob Cagle. Adam Coble and Peter Coble, settled in Hickan Co; Tn; about the same time. Also among the early settlers were Chessor, and Chandler. These families as Tom writes, married among each other. My ancestor Charles Jacob Cagle, may or may not be buried in the Cagle Cemetery in Hickman Co, I along with my wife have been to Coble, Tn; and of course we visited the Cagle & Chessor cemeteries. If my g.g.grandparents are buried there, then they are in un-marked graves. When I started researching my family I didn't have a lot to go on. My dad was born in 1916, and his grandfather died in 1917. So he never knew him & only knew what limited amount he was told of him. Therefore when I started my research, he was the only one I had information on. His name was Thomas William Cagle b. 4-01-1840. Also I knew from my dad that he was born in Hickman Co; Tn. So about six years ago I started to take a serious look for my ancestors. At the time my wife & I lived in Columbia, Mo. There on the UMC campus is the State Historcal Society. This is where I first went to begin my research, and beleive me I had never looked at census or other records before this. So I started from scratch and asked alot of questions. Knowing my g-grandfather Thomas, was born in 1840 I looked for him in the 1850 Tennessee State Census Index. There wasn't many listings for Hickman Co; and that is where I found him as a 10 yr. old Tom, living with his family. My excitment was very high for I now knew his father, mother, and siblings. Of course enumerated next to Charles, was Charles Sr; and his wife Virginia. ( her true name was later learned to be Elizabeth Curb) This is how I was first to learn about my Cagle's. Of course once the genealogy bug bit me, then I was hooked. Little did I know then that my family started out in Germany. This I found out later on and that after Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, my family was to live in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas. It was in Texas, that I got more information on my family. Charles Jacob Cagle's son William, had later settled in Red River Co; Tx. This William, was my g.uncle and a brother to my g.grandfather, Thomas William Cagle. (Thomas & William, seemed to be popular names with our Cagle's) In an article in the local paper is a story in regards to William & Louisa Elizabeth Cagle (Risenhover) 50th. Wedding Anniversary. The story mentions there childrens names, and also his parents. This is where I first get some information on them other than the census. In the story it shows his father's name as, Jacob Charles Cagle. Here I wish to quote from this article that is dated 1923. "William's parents, Jacob Charles, born Mar. 28, 1818, and Mary Patton (Polly), born Oct. 23, 1824, never lived in Red River Co. Jacob Charles was what was known as "Black Dutch". That is of German and Holland descent, but did not want to be called German, therefore; "Black Dutch". He spoke very broken English. He and his family farmed for a living." by Cindy Sargent Simpson. This is where I found complete dates of birth for Charles & Mary. Plus I learned that her maiden name was, Patton. Also this was the first time I had seen his complete name, Jacob Charles Cagle. He must have decided to use Charles, as this is how he is listed in other records. What had led me to Red River Co; Tx; was my great grandmother, Mary Elvira Cagle. According to the 1900 census of Mississippi Co; Mo; she is shown b. Aug. 1860, in Arkansas. This was the last census that she & Thomas William Cagle, would appear together. He appears with two of their children in the 1910 Oregon Co; Mo; census. He would later move back to Charleston, Mo; and died there on 8-29-1917. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery next to his daughter Ida Mae Golightly (Cagle) and his son, William Cagle. Thomas William Cagle & Mary Elvira (Alvira) Cagle, were married in Oregon Co; Mo; on July 24, 1877. On there certifcate of marriage she is listed as Mary E. Cagle. So this may have been a cousin who married a cousin. Or too it may have been an error on the recorders part. So to this day I know nothing of her family. In a family plot at Lanes Chapel Cemetery, in Clarksville Red River Co; Tx; is a small marker with the name Mary Cagle. There are no dates or other information on her stone. This as far as I have been able to learn, is the final resting place of my great grandmther. Why she ended up in Texas (if that is the case) and he in Charleston, Mo; is beyond me. In my research I have yet to find her date of death. Some of the newspaper records from Red River Co; Tx; were destroyed. I wrote to the State Archives in Austin, Tx. They sent me photo copies of Cagle Deaths for Texas for 1903-1940. She was not listed among the many Cagle's, from across the state. So she has been, and continues to be, a stumbling block in research of my, Cagle's. By the way if anyone on the list have Cagle's, who settled in Texas I have the death records for 1903-1940. If you want a lookup from this just let me know. This lists the complete date of death, county, and death certificate number. So in closing if any of you ever come across anything on Mary E. Cagle, please let me know. Earl
