My line is from Leonhart to Henry and according to most research I have seen Henry's wife was Caterena Seitz. She is idenfified in Henry's will and their daughter Caterena Cockman (no doubt named for her mother) is also identified. I have noticed also, John "Dutchman" had a wife named Catherine or possibly Caterena. Maybe some of you other folk could help clarify this matter. Earl L. Cagle, Sr.
A recent message from _Cagle2002@webtv.net_ (mailto:Cagle2002@webtv.net) contains the following: snip - "From the 1799 Will of John, filed in Moore Co., NC., we learn his wife's name and the names of his ten children: Jacob, b. 1760s; Elizabeth, b. 1750s; George, b. 1750s; and Mary b. 1760s, m: James Melton; these four children are thought to be from his first marriage. The next six are thought to be from his second marriage to Catarina "Caty" Seitz/Sides:" end of snip Perhaps I am confused, but the information I have shows that the John mentioned above married Catherine LNU, and that his brother Henry (about 1730-1802) was married to Caterena SEITZ/SIDES. I am descended from their daughter Inna Caterena who married Joseph COCKMAN. I will greatly appreciate any help with this. Thanks! Lee, Your response was great as usual. I recognize some of that information as being my work from years past. I have a comment or two and perhaps a correction that should be made. I have never seen any evidence that Henry Cagle Jr., 1780-1857, was the son of George Cagle, d. 1825. On the other hand Henry Sr. and Henry Jr. both lived in Cabarrus Co. and had land transactions together. Both moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1830. Based on the information that I got from John G. years ago, I also have assumed that Elizabeth Conrad was the wife of Henry Cagle Sr (.1760-1865?). ( I think a more accurate birth date for Henry Sr. is probably ca 1760 since we know his son Henry Jr. was born in 1780, died 1857. Do we know the approximate ages of Conrad Wagoner's children? Is it possible that Elizabeth Conrad was married to Henry Cagle, Jr. 1780-1857? I'll see if I can find any census information on some of these people. The last paragraph below is obouvously my work as there is information there that could be known only to me. However there is an observation or two included that is not mine. The first sentence following is from below: "There were five Cagles listed in the 1833 Census of Hardin Co., TN, the numbers represent the order in which the census taker wrote down the names. They were: No. 430, Henry Cagle; No. 431 George Cagle; and No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. Nos 430 Henry and No. 431 George are the sons of David, b.1728, Germany. No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr was the son of Old Leonard Kegel." It is my opinion from all the information that I have seen that No.430 Henry and No. 431 George were sons of No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. This Henry Cagle, Sr. was born ca 1760, after the probable death of "Old" Leonard Cagle, and was assumed to be the youngest son of David Cagle, 1728-1790's. The two other Cagles that were in Hardin Co., TN in 1833 were No. 608 Henry Cagle and No. 610 James Cagle as shown on the Tax List. They were gone form Hardin Co. before 1840 and apparently surfaced in DeKalb Co. AL that year. Both were enumerated in Hancock/Winston Co. AL in 1850. These are my notes which I have assembled from the various writings of John G Cagle and others. The ancestry of Henry Cagle has not been established with complete certainty, but it would seem that he was the youngest son of old David Cagle, who moved from PA to NC in the 1754-55 era, and who lived near Henry in old Mecklenburg in the 1780s. Not all researchers would agree with this assessment, however, and there are those who feel that Henry could have been son of George Cagle 1750-1825, of adjoining Stanley Co., NC and thus a grandson of old David. The 1790 census shows that Henry had 4 sons and no daughters. In 1800, he had three sons and 2 daughters. Then in 1810, he has one son and two daughters or a daughter and a 2nd wife in his household and two sons, Henry Jr. and David living nearby. In 1820 Henry Sr. moved across the Rocky River into Montgomery Co., NC and that census is lost. Sons, Henry Cagle, Jr. and George Cagle continued to live in Cabarrrus County until they moved to Hardin Co., TN, George in 1826 and Henry Jr. in 1828. Henry Cagle, Sr, moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1832 and is thought to have died there abt 1838. The following deed transaction confirms the marriage of Elizabeth Wagoner and Henry Cagle: Lincoln Co; NC Deed Book 20: 104-30 August 1800, Heirs of Conrad Wagoner (d.25 Mar 1799) quit their claim to the land; William Christopher, Conrad (JR) and Michael, his sons; Henry Keagle, Jacob Zieger, Jacob Hartle, Bulser Hofman, his sons-in-law; Eva Wagoner, widow, all sign for the 204 acres contract purchased 1 Feb 1785. Conrad Wagoner, Sr., an early German settler on the South Fork of the Catawba River, died and left a will in Lincoln, present Catawba, County, NC in 1796; then, in 1800, a tract of his land in Lincoln County was sold in order to satisfy the claims of his heirs, who according to the contents of the 1800 document, included his widow, his sons, and his sons in law. The deed, which appears in Lincoln County Deed Book 20 pages 104-06, reads as follows: April Court, A. D. 1800 This Indenture made the 30 day of August A D 1800 between William Wagoner, Christopher Wagoner, Conrad Wagoner, Michael Wagoner, Henry Keagle, Jacob Ziger, Jacob Hartle, Balser Huffman and Eva Wagoner, widow of Lincoln County in the state of North Carolina of the one part and John Wilfong of the county and state aforesaid of the other part: Witnesseth that the said Wm., Christr, Conrad & Michael Wagoner & Henry Keagle, Jacob Hartle, Jacob Ziger, Balser Huffman and Eve Wagoner for and in consideration of the sum of $150 dollars to them in hand paid by the said John Wilfong the receipt whereof they and each of them doth hereby acknowledge, have given, granted, bargained and sold and by the presents doth give, grant, bargain Sell alien & confirm unto the said John Wilfong his heirs & assigns for ever all that tract and parcel of land situate lying & being in the county of Lincoln in the state of No. Carolina and on the waters of the South Fork Catawba River and on the Ease sid of said River Bounded as follows vis. Singned, Sealed and Delivered in presence of: William Polk and Joseph Howell. his mark Henry (HK) Cagle. The exact location of Lick Branch has not been determined; however, it is a tributary of Rocky River in the SE portion of Cabarrus County, perhaps in District 14 of old Mecklenburg County where Henry lived at the time of the 1790 Mecklenburg Census. In 1811, Henry Cagle, Sr sold a 120 acre tract of land to his son Henry Jr., for the sum of $200; the deed, which was witnessed by John Polk and David Cagle, another of Henry Sr's sons, indicated that the tract lay on the east sside of Rocky River in Cabaruss Co., presumably in District 12 of old Mecklenburg County. The deed mentions that Henry Jr was to possess the rights to "all the mines and minerals". This terminology, which is absent from the pre 1800 Cagle deeds of the region, serves to demonstrate the impact of the Reed Gold Strike in drawing attention to the mineral wealth of the area. Cabarrus County was formed from the NE portion of Mecklenburg County in 1792, and included within it's boundaries those four Cagle families which had been enumerated in Mecklenburg in the 1790 census. By the time of the 1800 Cabarrus County census only two of those families were still living in the area. Henry Cagle b. 1760s was a lontime resident of Cabarrus County and remained there until after the 1810 census. As nearly as can be determined, he moved to Montgomery County during the 1810s and was still living there at the time of the 1830 census. The Cabarrus county census of 1810 and 1820 suggest that Henrys three sons were named Henry Jr., George, and David. A fourth son, listed in the 1790 Mecklenburg County census as born 1774-90 was not listed in Henry's household in the 1800 census, nor does he appear in the 1810 and 1820 census of Cabarrus County. The identity of this fourth son, if indeed he survived to adulthood, has not been established in census records of NC. \ Centain Cagle researchers, though apparently without definite proof, have variously suggested that his name was Martin, Charles of Peter. Most of the family moved to Hardin Co., TN in the 1820s. Henry Sr arrived in Hardin Co by 1832.. He filed for vacant land in Hardin County in 1837, but never completed the process to get title to the land. This family also, lived in Montgomery and Cabarrus Counties for several years before pulling up stakes for Tennessee. There were five Cagles listed in the 1833 Census of Hardin Co., TN, the numbers represent the order in which the census taker wrote down the names. They were: No. 430, Henry Cagle; No. 431 George Cagle; and No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr. Nos 430, Henry and No. 431 George are the sons of David, b. 1728, Germany. No. 432 Henry Cagle Sr was the son of Old Leonard Kegel. His survey for land in Hardin Co., TN was dated 3 Jul 1837. About 1838 most of the Cagle family in Hardin County, Tennessee moved to New Madrid Co., Mo. It was a very easy flatboat ride down the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers from Hardin to New Madrid. Henry Cagle, Jr and his brother George Cagle, both originally from Cabarrus Co., NC, and several other relatives made the trip abt 1838. The 1840 census shows: Henry Cagle 00101001-0100101 and Elizabeth Cagle 011-111001 Elizabeth was the widow of George Cagle who was killed when a tree fell on him while clearing land and building a cabin. Elizabeth and her children moved back to Hardin County in 1841 and are enumerated in the 1850 census for that county. Henry Cagle Jr. and his son George Cagle were enumerated in the 1850 census of New Madrid Co., Mo. The other Cagles in New Madrid were from the Perry-Decatur Co., TN area. Will Book A, page 49 JOHN CAGLE'S WILL In the name of God Amen. I, John Cagle of Moore County being sound and perfect mind and memory blessed by god do this Eighteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety Eight make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say - First I give and bequeath to Cathrine Cagle, my beloved wife, my land and plantation my stock of horses cattle & hogs all the household furniture, by her freely & quickly and peaceably to be possessed till my sons come of age, John Cagle and William Cagle. John, my son John Cagle shall have one hundred and fifty acres of land lying on the south side of Cabin Creek and my son William Cagle shall have one hundred and twelve acres in the fork of Cabin Creek and Bear Creek the plantation I am now living on after his coming of age. My wife Cathrine Cagle shall have ten acres in what part she pleases of the said old plantation as long as she lives or remains my widow and afterwards it shall belong to my son William Cagle and he also, shall have thirty-eight acres of land lying by the Meeting House by him freely to be possessed and enjoyed. Also my daughters Susanna Cagle, Dorety Cagle, and Margaret Cagle shall have the horses cattle hogs and all the household furniture shall be divided among them three equally after my wife Cathrine Cagle's deceased by them freely possessed and enjoyed. I also give to my beloved children Jacob Cagle & Elizabeth Gilmore & George Cagle & Mary Melton and Henry Cagle everyone of them to have the sum of twenty shillings to be paid out of my estate & I do hereby utterly disallow revoke & disannul all and every other former testaments wills & legacies bequeathed and executors by me in any wise before this time named will and bequeathed ratifying & confirmed this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written. I do hereby appoint Bartholomew Dunn and George Cagle as executors. His Mark John X Cagle ................................................................The earliest Cagle reference in the records of old Cumberland Co., NC, dates from February 3, 1764, when John Kegill (John "Dutchman" Cagle) bought 120 Acres in the forks of Bear and Cabin Creeks from James Chiney (James Cheney), as recorded in Deed Book 2, pages 326-7.( A transcript of this deed and a photo copy of the original document is published in the Cagle Journal of Historical Inquiry, Jan 1999, pg 2 authored by John G Cagle of Little Rock, AR.) Richard Caswell had originally received the tract of land by a grant from the Colony of NC on May 10, 1760, and he sold it to James Cheney on May 28, 1760, who in turn sold it to John Kegill. John Cheney made a handsome profit on his sale to John, having paid only twenty pounds Proclamation money, a currency issued by the Colony of North Carolina as a supplement to the British pound sterling, which was continually in short supply during the colonial period. John paid seventy-five pounds proclamation money for the same parcel. On May 15th, 1764, Mary Cheney, wife of James Cheney, executed her release of dower on the tract of 120 acres which her husband had conveyed to John on Feb 3, 1764.( This document, as recorded in Cumberland Co. Deed Book 2, pp 360-61, was transcribed and a photo copy of the original provided in the Jan 1999 issue of the Cagle Journal of Historical Inquiry.) As a matter of interest, Richard Caswell, the original owner of John's land, went on to become Governor of North Carolina and the original tract was for 170 acres, but by the time the tract was sold by James Cheney to John in 1764, the deed lists the tract as only 120 acres. The reason for this discrepancy is unclear, but in 1811 it was corrected by William Cagle, 1788-1860, John's youngest son, who inherited the tract of 120 acres at John's death in 1799. There were two more entries in the minutes of the Cumberland County Court of Pleas & Quarter Session for Nov 1764, that being John Kegell as a Road Jury Member to lay off a road from Sandhill Smiths and the other from Bear Creek, at Shuffills path to join Spinx's Road. Received a land grant for improvements to property in Moore County, North Carolina in 1796-64A on South side of Cabin Creek adjoining property of George Cagle. Bought 100 acres in Feb 1764 at Bear Creek where gold was later discovered by Conrad Reed, minor son of John Reed, a German immigrant, that being a 17 lb gold nugget. John Dutchman and his brother David (1728-1780 had homesteaded at this location in 1764. John Dutchman's son John, inherited 150 acres, then moved to Mississippi in the early 1810s and left his land to his brother, George 1760-1830. George gave his land to his son John M. Cagle 1793-1860. He stayed on the place and worked the mine, becoming the wealthiest Cagle in America. Tax list of 1767 Cumberland Co., NC shows John Dutchman with 310 Acres. >From the 1799 Will of John, filed in Moore Co., NC., we learn his wife's name and the names of his ten children: Jacob, b. 1760s; Elizabeth, b. 1750s; George, b. 1750s; and Mary b. 1760s, m: James Melton; these four children are thought to be from his first marriage. The next six are thought to be from his second marriage to Catarina "Caty" Seitz/Sides: Henry, b. 1770s; Susanna, b. 1770s; John, b. 1780s-1830s; William, b. 1788; Dorety, b. 1789, m: David Jones; Margaret, b. 1790s. It might be speculated that two of these children -- Henry and Dorety (Dorothy) were named after John Henry Seitz/Sides and Dorotha Elisabeth Felsinger Seitz/sides, who are the parents of Catarina "Caty". John Dutchman is buried in the Cagle Family Cemetery on John's old homestead. You go northeast from junction #1001 and #1434 about 200 yards to an open field on the north side of the road. Then go west across the center of the open field (Old Cagle house stood in the center of this field) for 100 yards to a twin poplar near the edge of the field; continue west for 25 yards to an old road bed leading towards Cabin Creek and to the paddy spring. The cemetery is marked by a tripple red oak. John and his wife are thought to be buried here, along with his son, George and his wife, George's son, John and his wife Martha's tombstones, together with their daughter's tombstone, Louisa A Cagle Goldston. There are other marked and unmarked graves. In, "Miscellaneous Ancient Records of Moore County, N.C." by Rassie E. Wicker...it states on Pg. 117 ..The Seventh or 1850 Census of Moore County...'The remainder of the people bear family names which might be either Ulster, Scot or English, with an admixture of German, such as Cagle (originally Kegill), ...' Pg. 305 shows the First Census of Moore County in 1790... Cagle Christian, David, George, George, Henry, Jacob, John, Leonard, Roger, and William. Pg. 313..."Cagle, Kegill - John Kegill, from Pennsylvania and a German, settled in the forks of Bear and Cabin Creek, above Rovvins. The Cagle gold mine was on this tract, which is now the property of Standard Mineral Company. The Cagle's were related to the Sides family, in Pennsylvania."

David, I haven't worked on this line in a while but here are a couple of clues: Lincoln County NC - Henry Keagle (Lincoln Co formed in 1779 from Tryon at the same time as Rutherford was formed from Tryon) 3- Aug 1800 - deed connected to the estate of Conrad Wagoner. The daughters were not named but the husbands were: ..."William Wagoner, Christopher Wagoner, Conrad Wagoner, Michael Wagoner, Henry Keagle, Jacob Hastle,Jacob Zeger, Baker Hoffman and Eve Wagoner, widow to John Willfong.... .. land formerly granted to Peter Moll by Kings patent dated 21? April 1768 and by him conveyed to Conrad Wagoner Sr now deceased and Eve his wife dated 1 Feb 1785." I did not find the names of the wives who would have been the daughters of Conrad Wagoner, the land would have gone to their husbands. Moore County 22 Mar 1802 - will of Henry Cagle but it is so poorly written and my copy is not very good. I can only make a few guesses: Children: Henry? Cagle, George Kagle, Martin (son), daughter Jane? Catherine Cockman, daughter Eliza Hubbard, daughter Mary Auman?, son William Cagle and wife Caterina Kagle executors - witness: Hardy? Davis, Peteer Davis and Charles Tyler. Sorry I can't be of more help with this one. I have more Lincoln Co records here that I have not transcribed yet. I'll try to find them. I have never been able to directly connect Henry of Lincoln with Henry of Moore although the dates would indicate the possibility that Henry of Lincoln is son of Henry of Moore. Frances, The Henry Cagle you mention appears to be Henry Cagle, Sr., ca 1760-ca 1838 who apparently died in Hardin TN. This is my line. Hardin County and 1838 is the last record I have of Henry. I don't know if he was born in Cumberland-Moore Co., NC. I note that John G. Cagle suggests that Elizabeth Wagoner was the wife of the above mentioned Henry Cagle, Sr. I have seen where others disagree. I would like to know for sure.
