Lee, These two aren't Cagles - they're Lagles. The 1870 and 1860 census for Clay County, Il are clearer. Both records show an "L" instead of a "C". 1880 is up for debate. I now have over 67,000 Cagles which is probably about half of where I have to go. Lee, Thanks for your reply. Is John G. Cagle still living? Carole Cook -----Original Message----- From: cagle-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cagle-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lee Cagle Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2007 9:03 PM To: cagle@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAGLE] Question for Lee Cagle Carole, Actually, I never made the determination. John G Cagle of Arkansas published several books and Journals. I went through these for over two years assembling all his information on the CAGLEs prior to 1850 into some order I could understand. Much of his information is scattered in different reference books, but in this way I combined land records, biblical records, census records, wills, surveys, etc. John G did most of the research from the old courthouses. I have been working on the Cagles of Leonhart for the past 10 years, averaging over 70 hours per week. There is very little that can be proven absolutely on the older generations. My primary work now is transcribing census records from 1850 to 1930 and attempting to identify them all. It is probably more than I can finish. I am 70 years old, had four heart attacks, and installed a pacemaker/defibrulator after my heartbeats dropped to 24 per minute. This was only a couple of years ago, but I was back at it within a week. I have still not finished with going through all of John's work which I plan to start back with as soon as I finish with the census records. John's great grandfather and mine were brothers, but he still charged me the same price as he did everyone else for his various works. Good luck with your research. I would look all these up for you, but there are just too many sources to check and would be too time consuming. And, as I said, I do not have his complete volumns. Check with David of Tennessee, I believe he has even more of John's work than I and might even have the time or answers. I got my question mark in the wrong place in the previous email. This will make more sense. Who were the wife and children of the Leonard Cagle who was the son of Charles Cagle? This Charles Cagle was in the 1790 US Census for Mecklenburg Co., NC. He died in 1801 in Montgomery Co., NC. Carole Cook

The only Karl Wilhelm Cagle that I have seen was in VA. I have not seen it proved that he was connected to the NC Cagles. Might Karl and Charles be the same? Lee Cagle has in his information on Ancestry World Tree Project: Cagle-Carter-Jackson-James-Jinks-Archer Genealogy Database on Ancestry.com that the John Cagle (#23), who married Lucy, was the son of Karl Wilhelm Cagle (#5) rather than the son of Charles Cagle (#7). He also has that John Francis Cagle (#41) was the son of Charles Cagle (#7). >From John G. Cagle's book The Cagle family in the South to 1850 : North Carolina I got the idea that the John Cagle, who married Lucy, was thought to be the son of Charles Cagle who lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC then later Montgomery Co., NC. I read this several years ago. Perhaps new evidence has come to light. I have noticed people in emails referring to the fact that John G. Cagle published a Cagle Newsletter or Journal for several years after publishing The Cagle family in the South to 1850 : North Carolina. I have not seen any of these publications. I am hoping someone on this list has information that documents who the fathers were of John Francis Cagle and the John Cagle who married Lucy. Carole Cook

Micah, I have no record of George after 1880 Fannin Co., TX. However, please note that I think his son Henry appears in Oklahoma in 1900. If it is determined that this is a son of George, that might be a good place to look also. Keep me posted. David, Thanks for your message! I have checked further into your suggestions. Yes, I believe you may be right. It is far too curious for two John Cagles to be born at the same time and have two sons born at the same time named George Cagle. Considering that the firstborns were most often named after a father, grandfather, it is quite possible that we do have the same John Cagles. I contacted a descendant of another line that intersects with our Cagles. They have that John Cagle's wife's name was Emily J. Derossett. John married again to Eliza Niles. My grandfather remembers half brothers and sisters of William's. It does appear that by 1900, the John Cagle of Fannin Co., Texas has either moved or is deceased. His son, William died in 1941 (my grandfather was only 8 or 9 years old). I'm going to do some more research into Fannin Co. records online and see what I can find. I'll let you know if anything of note turns up. --Micah-- David Cagle <dcagle1@charter.net> wrote: Micah, I believe you need to look at this a little more carefully. David and list, After finding out more information from the list, I really dug my heels in and did some research. For you, I have good news. For me, I have hit the perpetual brick wall. Apparently, from everything I have found, I have arrived at the conclusion that my John Cagle cannot be the son of your George Cagle (son of Henry Jr.). I went back and really examined the 1880 census record of George Cagle in Fannin Co., Texas. I noticed that Eliza Bishop (aunt) was living in a household just before his. When I viewed the previous page, there it was: John Cagle and Sarah Cagle. This would be George's missing son I believe. Apparently your John did move to Texas with his parents. My John was born in Missouri, but does not show up until 1900, shown as married to Elibyre and with a couple of children. I will continue to search, but of course all my info is now incorrect. I did find a record which leads me to believe that my John Cagle's father is from Tennessee....can anyone help??? Thanks! --Micah-- Micah Allen <silvertrill@yahoo.com> wrote: David, In the 1870 U.S. Census, if you view the original image, you will find an Eliza Bishop and a William Hulin living in George H Cagle's household in Big Prairie, New Madrid, Missouri.
