Earl and List, My apologies for the length of the following. I can't identify the Benjamin Cagle family listed here, and felt it might help someone else. I ran across this while researching another family line, and it intrigued me. Doyle **************************** CNIDR Isearch-cgi 1.20.06 (File: p4500001.txt) Pullin Family Cemetery Inscriptions Henry County, GA PULLIN FAMILY CEMETERY INDEX, Henry County, GA Submitted: 01/20/1999 Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by Linda S. Sanders, GA - sigler-sanders@mailcity.com Compiled by: Linda S. Sanders sigler-sanders@mailcity.com Introduction: This cemetery is located on Bill Gardner Parkway in Locust Grove. Directions are I75-S to Exit 68, right (which is Bill Gardner Parkway). Approximately 3 miles on the left is the cemetery, within walking steps to a railroad track. It is also directly across from an upscale "fly-in" community called Mallard's Landing. This compiler noted that this cemetery is extremely ornate. No expense was spared in the interment of this family. A stone wall encloses it. It is very noticeable from the road since it is directly on a main thoroughfare through the county. LOWES DISTRICT This area was home to some very prominent families, and was one of the best agricultural sections in the county. This graveyard is where Benjamin Cagle, the John G. Pullin family, Williams L. Kimbell and others are buried. Pullin: Elijah Pullin married Elizabeth Slaik in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1808. John Pullin, his son, married Elizabeth A. Edwards, daughter of William Edwards and Susannah Wynn (from South Carolina). They had a son, Peter W. Wilson, who married Lelia Harper and they produced 5 sons. Peter was a very successful farmer and became one of the wealthiest men in the county. In fact, when Henry County needed money in 1897 to build the new courthouse, P.W. lent the money - as a manager/director of The Bank of Henry County. P.W. was noted as one of the big Four of Lowe's district which produced large amounts of cotton and corn. Kimbell: William Lumpkin Kimbell, (b) 09/17/1820m (d) 01/16/1907, was married 1846 to Minerva Robertson (1819-1875). Father of William was Christopher Kimbell. Their association with the Cagle family was through their daughter who married a Cagle, and her daughter Lizze Cagle married Jordan M. Johnson. William L. Kimbell married Sarah Samantha Thrower (1837-1888), after the death of Minerva. They are also buried in the Pullin-Cagle-Kimbell cemetery on the Locust Grove-Luella Road (now known as Bill Gardner Parkway). Other siblings of W.L. were Martha Kimbell Crow, David T. Kimbell, Mary Kimbell Chappell, George W. Kimbell, Frances Kimbell Brown, Cagle: Benjamin Cagle was a Justice of the Peace from 3/14/1832 - 1/17/1833 and 4/30/1856. This is lengthy but interesting. PA GERMAN NAMES CUSTOMS TRADITIONS PENNSYLVANIA PA GERMAN NAMES CUSTOMS TRADITIONS PENNSYLVANIA 1. At baptism, if two given names were given to the child, the first given name was a spiritual, saint's name, originally developed from Roman Catholic tradition and continued by the Protestants in their baptismal naming customs. The second given name was the secular or call name, which is the name the person was known by, both within the family and to this rest of the world. The spiritual name, usually to honor a favorite saint, was usually repeatedly given to all the children of that family of the same sex. Thus the boys would be Johan Adam Kerchner, Johan George Kerchner, etc., or Philip Peter Kerchner, Philip Jacob Kerchner, etc. Girls would be named Anna Barbara Kerchner, Anna Margaret Kerchner, etc., or Maria Elizabeth Kerchner, Maria Catherine Kerchner, etc. But after baptism, these people would not be known as John, Philip, Anna, or Maria, respectively. They would instead be known by what we would think of now as their middle name, which was their secular name. Thus these people would be known respectively as Adam, George, Peter, Jacob, Barbara, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Catherine in legal and secular records. For males, the saint's name Johan or John was particularly heavily used by many German families. The child's secular name was really John, if and only if, at baptism he was named only John, usually Johannes, with no second given name. Many researchers, new to German names, who find a baptism of an individual with a name such as Johan Adam Kerchner, thus mistakenly spend a lot of time looking for a John Kerchner, in legal and census records, when he was known after baptism, to the secular world, as Adam Kerchner. Also when reading county histories, etc., especially those written by individuals in the 20th century, and the author is referring to someone as John Kerchner, and you are not looking for a John Kerchner, but the history sounds otherwise familiar, further research may turn up that this person was really not a John Kerchner, but instead was someone else such as a Johan George Kerchner. You would thus find all his 18th century records recorded under the name George Kerchner and not John Kerchner and therefore after checking the data and correlating the facts you may find this is really a story about your missing George Kerchner. 2. The term "Senior" and "Junior" following a name did not necessarily imply a father and son relationship, as it does now. It could have been an uncle and nephew who had the same name and lived near each other. It could be a grandfather and a grandchild living together, where the father has died. It could even be two unrelated individuals with the same name but of different ages who lived near each other. So to help friends and business associates keep track of who-was-who in their discussions and records, they added on the "Sr." or "Jr." which merely meant the older and the younger, respectively. 3. The term cousin was widely used to mean an extended family, not the specific legal definition we understand it to be today. 4. It was a common practice in some German families to name the first born son after the child's paternal grandfather and the second born son after the maternal grandfather. Here are several more detailed naming patterns practiced by some families. Pattern A 1st son after the father's father 2nd son after the mother's father 3rd son after the father 4th son after the husband's father's father 5th son after the wife's father's father 6th son after the husband's mother's father 7th son after the wife's mother's father 1st daughter after the wife's mother 2nd daughter after the husband's mother 3rd daughter after the mother 4th daughter after the father's father's mother 5th daughter after the mother's father's mother 6th daughter after the father's mother's mother 7th daughter after the mother's mother's mother Pattern B The pattern B for the sons is the same as the above but this pattern for daughters was different 1st daughter after the father's mother 2nd daughter after the mother's mother 3rd daughter after the mother 4th daughter after the mother's father's mother 5th daughter after the father's father's mother Pattern C 1st son after the father's father 2nd son after the mother's father 3rd son after the father's oldest brother 4th son after the father 1st daughter after the father's mother 2nd daughter after the mother's mother 3rd daughter after the mother's oldest sister 4th daughter after the mother Whenever a duplicate name occurred in these patterns, the next name in the series was used. If a child died in infancy the name was often reused for the next child of the same gender. If you are lucky enough to find a family with a lot of children, who strictly followed one of these naming patterns, then it may give you useful clues to determining the possible names of family members in earlier generations. 5. An "in" or "en", added to the end of a name, such as Anna Maria Kerchnerin, is a Germanic language name ending suffix denoting that the person is female. Thus the correct spelling of the last name in the example would be Kerchner, not Kerchnerin. 6. An "er" or "ner", added to a surname based on the name of something, denoted that the person worked with that object or at that occupation, if the main portion of the name was an object or an occupation, or that the person was from that geographic location or city, if the main portion of the name was a geographic location. Examples: Forst is German for a forest, thus Forster is one who worked in a forest or with woodlands or was from a forest. Berlin is a city in Germany, thus Berliner is one who is from Berlin. Since English is a Germanic rooted language we do the same thing in English, i.e., Paint(er), Garden(er), New York(er). © 1997 hsdurbin@geocities.com
Cagle List, This virus has been bouncing around lately. I have had it and it is not really serious, but aggravating. Using the information below, it was easy to rid my system. If you get an attached file with the subject name, don't open it, just delete. After you get the virus and send attachments to others, you send the virus to others without knowing it. David There may be a virus in your systems. It is called HAPPY99.EXE. I got it from an emails a few days or so ago. You cannot tell when you send it out. It just shows up as a message in the recipient's in box. See http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/3652/SKA.HTM for an explanation and how to get rid of it. A simple process and appears to work.

Hello Board, Someone please help me understand the family structure of this Charles Cagle. In the CAGLE CENSUS RECORDS OF THE SOUTH, 1860-1910, page 226, John G. Cagle writes: "Charles Cagle, above, moved from NC to Warren Co., TN in the 1820s, then to Winston Co., AL, in the 1830s. His first wife --- mother of sons John T., b.1821, Loyd H., b.ca.1823, James Riley, 1824-1904, Jeremiah, b. ca. 1828, George W., 1835-1922 and Silas, b.ca.1838 -- died in the 1840s. Charles then married to Lenah Cagle, above, the Daughter of Valentine Cagle, Jr., b1786. who also moved to the Winston Co. area in the 1830s. Valentine, Jr. was a brother of John Cagle, 1798-1863, and Charles was apparently their cousin. Charles and Lenah, in addition to the three children noted above (Talitha b. 1848AL, Lavina b. 1952 AL, Charles b.1855) had a son named Andrew (age 1 in the 1850 Winston Census." Now turn from page 226 to page 228, where John G. Cagle writes referring to the 1880 census of Marion Co., AL: " Easter, 1815-1885, b.1822 and Telitha, b. 1822, were the unmarried daughters of Valentine Cagle, Jr. b 1786, ... . Annie was a sister of Easter and Telitha above. In the 1840s she had married Charles Cagle, b.1790s, a cousin who had moved to AL in the 1830s with her father Valentine, Jr." Questions: 1. Did Charles marry two of Valentine's Jr.'s daughters, Annie and Lenah? 2. Are Annie and Lenah the same person? 3. The big question? Who are the parent of this Charles? Jimmy B. Good evening everyone, First in response to Mollie. Sorry, but I have no Tabitha Ann at present. Second, Has anyone ever heard of Cagle being spelled Cajul. I had an inquiry about that name and the family later changed it to Cagle. It makes sense since I have had my name pronounced like that at times. Thanks! Tom

Hi List, I decided to periodically send out family groups from my family tree in hopes that someone out there may connect to names on the list and that together we may be able to expand on the family group. I can trace the line back to Leonhart in case anyone else connects with this particular group. I have started with my Great Grandparents Thomas Cagle, Jr and Sarah Catherine Chandler. My grandfather was their son Jasper Alonzo Cagle and I have great information on that line and information about Jessie Hard Cagle. Information on the other children is pretty sparse. Here it is so if anyone connects, please let me know. Tom Cagle In Very Snowy PA. Descendants of Thomas Cagle Jr. Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS CAGLE5 JR.
