Good Morning List, I recently had a question that came to me through our Cagle's In The Civil War site and was hoping that someone out there may be able to help. I've posted the query below and if anyone has any information please post it and I'll pass it along. Thanks! Tom Saegertown, PA Hi - I was wondering if you might be able to shed some light on a mystery. I >have a glass negative of Amelia Earhart and her husband that came out of an >estate in KS. The people who bought it think the box it was in said "Cagle," >and that is the only information we have. I was just curious if there is any >record of someone in the Cagle family around the 1930's who might have been a >newspaper photographer, possibly in KS, although I guess it could have been >anywhere. > >Figured no harm in asking!

Great story Nancy Jane. Stories such as that are the real gems of genealogy. Thanks for all your hard work. Keep going! Jimmy B. Cagle Long Beach, MS 1929
Hi Here is the story of the wargon train (its what I have put together, from my aunts and some other info and storys . I wish we could find the Bible of Charles Arter and Lydia "Lidie" Standridge , I wish we could find the Bible Mary Ann Cagle Tilley had it . And a aunt Lucille saw the bible and said it had alot of info in it. The Wagon Train In 1878 there was a group of family members who headed off for Oregon. There were mostley all family and from Newton County, Arkansas. The names of the familiys were Cagle, Standridge, Meek/Meeks, Lane , and Adams, Nolan and a Rigney. Charles Arter Cagle was a Farmer , a Baptist Minister and a Wagon Train Driver . It has never been said if Charles was the head of the Wagon Train or not or why they stoped and stayed in Idaho, some say because of illness? Some of the familys lived in Albion and some in the 14th district, they worked as farm laborers and cooks while they were there, maybe they stayed there until May 1880,they had enough money to get back home. (they are also listed in the 1884 census of Idaho, but we know they were all back home by then). For some unknown reason the familys decided to go back home to Newton County, Arkansas. They left right after May 31 1880, after the census was taken, it would have taken 4 to 5 months to get back to Arkansas . On the way home some of the family members drank water from a well or river and became ill with Typhoid Fever. The first known to died was Nancy Cagle Standridge, who was the wife of Jeremiah "Jerry" Standridge, she died on September 25, 1880, in Americus, Lyon County, Kansas , the next one to die may have been either Alexander Standridge who was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Tilley Standridge, (Alex was 22 years old,) and the son of Nancy Cagle and Jeremiah Standridge, or Lydia Margaret "Lidie" Standridge Cagle who was the wife of Charles Arter Cagle . Lydia had just had a child named Melvira V. who was born September 14, 1880, Lydia died September 30, 1880 in the wagon train camp. Alex died either two days before or two days after Lydia. Charles loved his wife and wanted to give her a proper buriel, so he cut off her long dark hair and sold it to a man who made horse whips out of it, in exchange the man paid for the her to be buried. Info from a letter written by Margaret Cagle Hubble she said there where still others who were ill. One of them had to be Burton Columbus Cagle, his name never showed up after this trip was made. Charles and Lydia had eight children only 5 lived. Charles hired a wet nurse to feed and take care of his new child and small children on the rest of the way back. The wet nurse Charles had was Mary Elizabeth Tilley Standridge. Charles married Mary E. Tilley Standridge on March 27, 1881 and they had 12 more children , they lived together for 43 years till his death in 1924. Some of the information was taken out of the widows Pension records. There are a couple of letters from family members who wrote letters , and they tell a little bit about there trip. One of the letters is from Margaret Cagle Hubble and one from his daughter Mary Ann Cagle Tilley and her husband John Riley Tilley. (Wagon Train followed the Oregon trial, along the Snake River to Organ and back home to Arkansas). Sorry to do it this way guys, but I just got my message to Lee back as undeliverable and I don't know how else to contact him. Lee, You can check with Nancy Jane Balmer (Njbalmer@aol.com), but I don't think your Leonard is ours. I know there were two or three at the same time--one went south and the other (ours) went to Kentucky and then Missouri. Good luck, Cuz! Jan Meranda merandja@ccmail.orst.edu
Hi I just copied 4 pages of info for you and lost it all . had the census for your Leonard back to 1810 . (Hope this is the right one . I don't know when my aunt bought these books but here is a name and address , mybe they still live there. It is worth a chance because they have the family Bible. Leonard Cgle Family Bible Jasper County, MO. The page at right from the Family Bible of Leonard Cagle 1780-1845, should help to clarify the family relationships among the Cagles of Jasper & Lawrence Cos., MO. (Provided by Mr. Robert Ernest Cagle , 20605 Via Azul, Yorba Linda, CA. 92686.) it might be noted that the birthplaces of Leonard, 1780-1845, and wife Elizabeth 1787-1866, are given as VA and SC; while this could be correct, it might seem more likely they were borh born in NC. the 1860 Census of Jasper Co. Mo lists Eliz. as born in NC. and, it is known that the father of Leonard, if corectly identified as John Cagle, Sr. Ca. 1740s-1826, was in NC in the 1760s, and living in what is now Cabarrus Co. in 1780. Of the sons listed at right , Linsey settled in Lawrence Co. Mo; Henry was in California in 1850 & 1860; Robert died as an infant; Edwin stayed in Jasper Co. MO. David remained in Jasper Co. MO. Benjamin , who died in 1900 moved to Charition Co. Mo, Charles remined in Jasper Co MO. willis moved to Saline Co. MO. Rebecca , 1817-1884, married John Logan Schooling on Jan 29, 1846, and their daughter Barthena Schooling, later married David C. Cagle , b 1843, son of Lindsey Cagle 1807-1863, on July 20. 1865. Other Jasper co.Marriages include David Cagle 1820-1896 to Mary J. Haselwood, Nov. 29, 1854. and Benj., 1825-1900 to Martha Walton , Sep. 23, 1860. This must be a copy of the page in the Bible. The 1826 letter of Rebecca Cagle of Montgomery (present Stanly ) Co. Mo, where leionrd soon died, in 1845. by 1860, Lindsey had moved across the county line into Lawrence Co. where his family settled permanently. sons David and Leonard became well-known figures in Lawrence Co., and appeared in all Lawrence Co. Censuses from 1860 through 1910. Well I hope some of this well help you , you probably have most of it , but didn't really know what you had and didn't. It still did not tell us were Leonard is buried . I have that 1826 letter of Rebecca Cagle's in one of these books, will try and find it. Nancy Jane Tarzana , CA April
Gary, Mom's note said 1780 but since they didn't arrive in Missouri until 1845 I figured she had to have written it down wrong. Now I'll have to contact her and find out what the heck she did mean. Yeah, we noticed there was a lot of confusion about all the Leonards and were happy to get our end straight. By the way, in your genealogy research have you noticed what name is usually assigned "Molly" as a nickname? We've seen "Polly" for Mary and "Sally" for Sarah.... Sorry about the confusion with Leonard's will date--I'll get it straight and try again! I was under the impression that he died in 1845. For years I thought this Leonard was my ancestor but discovered last year that he wasn't. My Leonard had sons Jacob, Joseph, John F and Benjamin F. This is also JohnG Cagle's line, you would think it would be less confusing with all the work he has done. Anyhow I was curious and wanted to see if 1880 was a typo or what. Thanks for your contributions to the list. Yours is the first message in 2 days. I thought the list was dead. Take care.
