Most Indian heritage comes from the maternial side of the family. There were less cases when full blooded indian men, married white women. Then as now men could get by with doing things a woman couldn't. Not much was said for example if a German man, married a Cherokee Indian woman. However, when you reversed this roll, then it was indeed frowned on. Gary & List, the Ward surname, appears in the first Cherokee Roll. Reservation Rolls 1817 A Listing of those desiring a 640 acre tract in the east, in lieu of removing to Arkansas. Upon the death of the reservee, or the abandonment of the property, title ws to revert to the state. Kim, Henry Cagle, Sr. b. ca 1760 NC, d. ca 1837 Hardin Co., TN(?) is considered by some to be the son of David Cagle, b. 1728 GER. That being the case, your Henry Cagle possibly died ca 1802 in Moore Co., NC where he left a will naming his children as follows: William Christian Henry Peter John Jacob George Martin Caterana Cockman (listed as daughter-in-law) Eliza Hubbard Mary Auman Are we talking about the same family? Hello All, Just to let the new folks know that mail lists slow down this time of the year. People enjoying the great outdoors, vacations, etc. So if things seem a little slow then that is why. However, there are still those around to answer your questions. Also if any of you want to open a discusion through the list, then please do. All that I ask is that the topic must be genealogy. One point of interest from me is, Leonhart Kegel. Does anyone have any ideas how we may find more records on he & family? There may be more records from the Sembach, Germany area. There may be more church records on him & family. As most of you know there were baptismal records found on two children. Wouldn't it be nice to find records on their other children. Also it is reported that he was married twice in Germany. Sure would be nice to find those marriage records. Any ideas on how we may track these records down? Earl

Hope everyone has great Birthday's and Anniversary's your Cagle Cousin Nancy Jane
Great work Nancy Jane. I had looked all around the Leonard Cagle moves for a long time and knew of the Cobb County land lottery to Leonard and found Reuben Tucker and Tabitha Ann with one child on the Cobb Co. Census. I had always assume that John Leonard's brother was her father, but with this information it appears that I was wrong. We also Tabitha and Reuben Tucker on the 1860 Census with six of their children. The next listing is in the 1870 Jefferson Co Al Census. Dr. Bob! Njbalmer@aol.com wrote: > Recived this information from John G. (Part Two) Tabitha Cagle Hill Leonard Cagle's sale of 460 acres in 1817 may mark the time of his move to Anson Co. NC, where he was living at the time of the 1820 census. However, he seems to have terained ownership of a small tract in Lancaster co., which he reserved for the use of the Baptist Church' in 1824, he sold this tract to John McManus, as noted below. this deed , along with three ohters, were recored by John McManus on Dec. 7, 1825, in Deed Book L, pp 176-80: Book L, page 176: April 4, 1817. However, it does sho that Leonard sold a tract of land in the county on Jan 10, 1825, some three months after th disposal of his 7-acre tract in Lnacaster Co., SC. this deed of Jan. 1825 probably mards the time when Leonard sold his holdings in Anson County, NC in preparation for his move to the State of Georgia. This deed was duly proved in open court by the oath of John Rushing and ordered to be registered. W. Dismukes, Clerk" Big Brown Creek, on which the above tract was situated, heads in Chesterfield Co., SC., and flows to the NE, Across the southeast corner of Union Co., NC, deed, this part of Union Co. (formed 1842) was still part of Anson County, . By the time of the 1830 census, Two Leonard Cagles from the state of North Carolina had settled in Henry Co., GA. a frontier county organized in 1821 from lands acquired form the Creek Indians. One of these was Leonard Cagle, 1770-1840s. who had sold land in Anson Co., NC in 1825, and the other was Leonard Cagle, c.1780-1850s who had appeared in the 1810 Lincoln Co., NC census. One of these Leonard Cagles, on his way to Henry co., briefly owned land in Franklin Co, Ga. in the NE corner of that state. The 1823 Tax List of Franklin County, shows that a Leonard Cagle owned 134 acres in the county during that year, situated on the Tugalo river. Leonard had bought this land from Chesley Cawthe, the origianl grantee. In Deeds of Franklin Co. Ga., 1784-1826, Mrs Martha Walters Acker indicates that Leonard sold this tract in 1824, as seen in the following abstract: Deed dated Franklin Co. 19 Aug. 1824, recorded 18 May 1825, from lenard Cagle to Wiley d. Morgan, both of aforesaid county. In consideration of $300, Lenard Cagle conveys 100 ac. grated to Chesly Cawthon, and 34 ac. adjoining the above and Edwards, on tugalo river, to wiley d. Morgan. signed "Leonord Cagle'> Wits.: Ben Starritt, Chesley Cawthorn, JP." (this was probably Leonard , c1780-1850, since the other Leonard was still in Anson co., NC in 1825. page 1 of August 1992 Leonard and John Cagle, of Lancaster Co., SC & Burke Co., NC 1790s-1820s The question remains regarding the movements of Leonard Cagle during the 20-year period from his purchase of 500 acres in lancaster co., SC in the late 1790s, to his sale of 460 acres in that same county, in 1817 (which deed notes that he was a resident of Anson co., NC by that time). The census record of 1850 and 1860, from the state of Georgia, give the birthplaces of four of his sons, as follow, which might five a clue as to his movements: Jephtha Cagle, born c. 1802, SC Eli Cagle, born c. 1805, NC William Cagle born c. 1814 SC Henry Cagle, born c. 1820 NC The birthdates of Leonad's sons might indicate that he moved gback and forth between NC and SC over the years , which is not surprising, since his tract of land in Lancaster co., SC was only a few miles south of the NC border. No census listing has been fount for Leonard Cagle in 1800 South Carolina , and it might be considered whether he was the Leonard Cagle appeared in the 1800 census of Moore Co. NC: 1800 Moore County, NC Cagle, Leonard 3001-1001 This listing would indicate that Leonard and wife were both between the ages of 26-45, and that they had three sons under age 10, and one daughter under the age of 10 This could be consistet with the age of Leonard Cale of Lancaster Co, who began to appear in the records of the county in 1791. It might be wondered if Leonard originated in Mecklenburg County, NC, moved to Lancater co., SC by 1791, then Moore County, NC, by 1800, and back to Sc by the time of the birth of his son Jephtha Cagle in 1802. Leonard Cagle, in addtion ot appearing the 1800 census of Moore county, received a grant of land in Moore County, during the late 1790s. this tract lay on upper Bear Creek in the NW corner of Moore co., adjoining the propeerty of Leonard Cagle Sr., who moved to Montgomery (present Stanly) Co.,NC during the late 1790s. The land entry of the younger Leonard was made on JUly 6, 1796, and his warrant of survey was dated March 2, 1799, and the grant was issued on Nov. 14, 1800. (some of the Original documents follow, beginning next page.) The warrant of survey, from 1799, indicates that the tract was located on both sides of Bear Creek Joining Leonard Cagle Senr. lines." this fact would bring up the question of whether the younger Leonard was the son of the older Leonard. the older Leonard, b. 1740s, had been a landowner in the Moore County, area since the late 1760s, and moved to Montgomery (present Stanly) Co. aboutn 1795 or 1796, after selling his Moore Co. property to Thomas Smutherman. This was propbably the same tract which adjoined the 1800 grant to the younger Leonard Cagel, since the warrant of the survey identifies the adjacent landowner as Leonard Cagle Senr., but the survey itself identifies him as Thomas Smutherman; this would suggest that Leonard Senr. had been the owner when the land grant process was initiated, but that the tract was trasferred to Thomas Smutherman before the process was completed. It is generally believed that Leonard Senr. did have a son named Leonard jr., but that he was still a minor during the 1790s, This Leonard Jr., it is believed, was the Leonard Cagle, 1780-1840s, who later married in Montgomery co. in the early 1800s, and moved to Warren Co., KY in the same decade, along with his brother Sampson Cagle, 1782-1874. If this is correct, it would indicate that the Leonard cagle with the 1800 land grant in Moore co., and who appeared in the 1800 moore co. cinsus was not the son of Leonard Senr, but was otherwise related. The following suggestion might be raised: Perhaps the younger Leonard of 1800 Moore wa th nephew of Leonard Senr. and the son of Leonard's older brother Charles Cagle Sr., c1730s-1801, who had moved from Moore County, NC to Mecklenburg Co., NC by the early 1770s. If this is correct, it might suggest that the younger Leonard could have moved from Lancaster co., SC to join his uncle in Moore county, NC in the late 1790s, remained there for a few yeard, and them moved back to SC. thus far , the editor has been unable to find any record among the deeds of Moore county, which would help indicate when the younger Leonard disposed of the land which he was granted in 1800 . List of the children of George Tucker Sr., a contemporay of Charles Cagle Sr. who like Charles owned land in both Meklenburg (present Cabarrus and Montgomery (present Stanly ) Co., NC (from Vol. VI, No. 1 , of the Stanly County, Genealogical society Journal.) Note that the oldes daughter of George Tucker was married to a Leonard Cagle , b. 1770, and that both were over age 45 in the census of 1820 (this would be Leonard Cgale, 1820 Anson) Also note that Jacob Tucker, 1774-1837, was married in 1797 to Magdalena b. 1780 (no last name given). It is possible that Magdalena was the Molly Cale listed as the wife of Jacob Tucker in Charles 1803 Estate paper SCGS JOURNAL VI, 1 George Tucker, Sr, Revolutionary War Patriot George Tucker, Sr. was born about 1740 in Virginia bur migrated to North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War, as he is listed in "Roster of Tevolutionay Soldiers in North Carolina", page 344 - #2726 Salisbury District, as a Patriot, having signed the "Oath of Allegiance" and furnished supplies. He lived Mecklenburg County, NC in the part that is now Cabarrus County, ner the Reed Gold MIne, but he owned land on both the east and west sides of rocky river, the east side being what is not Stanly County. Most of Geroge's children lived in Cabarrus County. However, sons Leonard and Peter, along with sons-in -Law James Little and Leonard Cagel, lived in Montgomery, that part that is now Stanly. George Tucker may have been twice married, but there is no record of his first wife's name. A JOhn tucker who owned land adjoining the tucker heirs but was not mintioned in the disrtibution and settlement of George Tucker's Estate may have been a son by his first wife. His second wife , Maria Dorothea, is proven by her giving her consent as his wife to a conveyance dated April term 1795. George and Maria dorothea were married about 1764. George died before October 1804 as Jams Little and George Tucker Jr. were appointed administrators of his estate at that time. Recived this information from John G. Cagle today. He thinks that Tabitha's father was Leonard Cagle b-1770-1840 . Here is what he said in his letter. Some Ideas on the posible ancestry of Tabitha Cagle b-1820s, who married Tuben Tucker Hill. The likeliest possibility of Tabitha Cagle seems to be Leonard Cagle , C1770-1840s, a native of North Carolina, who appeared in various records in Lancaster Co SC and nearby Anson Co. NC, during the period from 1791 through 1825. Some of his children were born in SC, others in NC. Leonard ancestry remians unclear - was possibly a son of Charles Cagle Sr. c1730-1801 of Stanly Co. NC, and some think he was a son of George Cagle Sr. 1740, 1825, also of Stanly Co. NC. (he sent we about 10 pages of the Cagle Journal from Aug 1992. Leonard Cagle, after selling his land in SC & NC in 1824-25, moved to Henry Co. Ga., Where he joined two other settlers from Stanly Co., NC : David Cagle Sr. 1767-1825 (son of Geroge Cagle Sr. 1740s-1825), and a younger Leonard Cagle c.1780-1850, who was a cousin . David Sr. remained permantly in Henry Co. GA. but both Leonard Cagle's moved to northwest Gerogia during the 1830s, with the older Leonare, c1770-1840s moving to Cobb Co. The only daughter in their houshold, in the 5-10 age braket born 1820-1825 era, may have been Tabitha Cagle, On July 6, 1837 a Tabitha Hill married Robert Fendley in Henry County, with cermony performed by Robert Cagle J.P., son of David Cagle Sr. 1767-1852. It is unclear if Tabitha Hill was related to Reuben Tucker Hill . (sent me a copy of the of page of marriage). 1838, Leonard Cgale had moved to Cobb County, GA. and seems to have been accompnied by all his children. In the 1840 census Jeptha Cagle is listed as head of household, living near to Reuben Tucker Hill . 1840 Census , Cobb Co. GA. p.274 Distict 878 Cagle, Jephtha 110022001-01001 Hill, R.T. 00001 - 0001 Hill, Robert 00001 - 0001 It would appear that Leonard Cagle was a widower by this time , and probably was the older male in the 60-70 age bracket in Jephta's houshold., Jephtha and wife seem to be listed in teh 30-40 age bracket. Jephtha's three borthers also seem to be in his houshold, in the 20-30 and 30-40 age brackets. By the time of the 1850 Census, Jephtha Cagle was still living in Cobb Co , GA, but moved to Marshall col ALA during the 1850s, his brothers Eli and Henry were present on 1849 Cobb Co. tax list, but by 1850 census had moved to Murray Co, GA. , probably lived in southern end of Myurray which soon became Gordon Co. . In 1860 Census, Eli & Henry Cagle, lived in Freeman's district in Gordon County; Ruben T. Hill & wife Tavitha lived in Coosavattee (?) Dist in Gordon County, 1860 Census Gordon Co. June 1992 Cagle Journal of Historical Inquiry : The Children of John Cagle, Sr. c1730-1801, of Mecklenburg Co. NC. The childen of Charles Cagle, Sr. c1730-1801 of Mecklenburg Co., NC (pg. 4) Leonard and John Cagle, of Lancaster Co, 1790s, and Burke Co, NC Lancaster Co., South Carolina, which adjoins anson Co., NC to the south lost most of its early records to a courthouse fire. One of the few surviving setof records which remains intact is the group of original deed books, dating back to the county's founding in 1785. Avstracts of these deeds were published in 1981 by Brent H. Holcomb, in Lancaster County, South Carolina Deed Abstracts. 1787-1811. The Cagle references from this volume are as follows: Book B. , p.176: Jan. 1, 1791 , State of SC, Chesterfield County, John Stroud of aforesaid County, to Jacob Shoffner of Lancaster Co., Miller, for L.20, 100 acres of both sises of Big Lynches Creek in both the counties stated above, adjoining John Fonderburk, Peter Crons, Jacob Baker, David Fonderburk, Devalt Fonberburk . Witnesses: John Bibbe John Stroud (X) Leonard Kagle (X) Proved by Jan. 3, 1791, by John Bibbe, before John Craig, JP. (Editor's Note: In 1795, Jacob Shoffner sold the tract abobe to David Funderburk, who had been one of the neighbors in 1791. The Shoffeners and Funderburks, like the Cagle, were German families which had previously lived in Pennsylvaina and North Carolina. The name Fundeburk is an Anglicized Spelling of the name Von der Berg) Book B. p.303: July 8, 1795 Francis Bettis of Lancaster Co., SC, to Abraham Hagler of same, for L50, 208 Acres in Chesterfield Co., on the Reddy Fork, a prong of Fork Creek, adjoining said Bettis, John Blackburn, part of 5,000 Acres granted to said Bettis on March 01, 1790. Whits: John Ferguson, Richard Bettis Francis Bettis Leonard Kagle (X) proved by Leonard Kagle, 10 Sept. 1795; John Welsh, JP Book D, p.181: John Welsh of Lancaster Co. , to Leonard Cagle, for L50, 500 acres in the district of Camden, on water of Lynches Creek adjoining Boston Hagler, George McManus; on Turkey Creek, part of a grant to Thomas Sumter on April 2, 1878. Wits: Abraham Haglar (X) John Welsh Charles McManus Proved by Charles McManus, Dsec. 18, 1797 ; John Welsh, JP. Editor's Note: Tuckey Creek was a small triburary on the west side of Lynches Creek, and thus in Lancaster co., since Lynches Creek formed the boundary between Lancaster was one of the counties in the District of Camden which at that time also included York, Chester, Fairfield, Richland, clarendon, and Claremont Counties. Chesterfield County, which lay East of Lacaster Co. across Lynches Creek, was in the cheraws district. The Haglers, mentioned in the avove deed, were another of the German families who had moved into Lancaster Co. SC for North Carolina. Book D, p 182: Sep. 6, 1796 John Cagle & wife Lucy of Lancaster Co., to Jacob Hagler of Lancaster Co., for L30, sterling, 50 Acres on the west side of Big Lynches Creek, adjoining said Hagler, Pate: Plat dated 1750 to James McManus the Patentee. Wits: Charles McManus Jacob Englet (X) John Cagle Catharine Englet (X) Proved by Charles McManus, July 30, 1803. (Editor's Note: Tuckeyhoe was Tuckaho Creek, a small tributary on the west side of Lynches Creek, near Turkey Creek.) John and Lucy Cagle, of the 1796 deed above, later migrated to Burke Co, NC, where they appeared in the census of 1810. John died there in 1815, and Lucy after appearing in the 1820 census, died c. 1823. A Leonard Cgle appeared with John Cagle in Burke Co., NC records in 1814-1815, althou it is unclear at this time whether he was the some Leonard who was in Lancaster Co., SC, above. (July 1992 , p. 1,) Continued in this issue is an investigation of the movements of Leonard and John Cagle of Lancaster Co. SC and Burke County, NC, to determine if they could have been sons of Charles Cagle Sr: Leonard and John Cagle, of Lancaster Co., SC & Burke Co., NC 1790-1820s In the June issue, it was noted that Leonard Cagle and John Cagle (and wife Lucy) were involved in a number of land transactions in Lancaster co., SC in the 1790s, the last of which occurred in 1798. It is known , from later census records that Henry Cagle, oldest son of JOhn and Lucy, was born c.1798 in the state of South Carolina. their second son, John Cagle, was born c.1802, in North Carolina, as were their later children, which would suggest that they moved to North Carolina between 1798 and 1802, and never returned to South Carolina. John and Lucy have not been located in lthe census of 1800, and may have been missed by the census-taker in that year. By 1810, they wre present in the census of Burke Co., NC, where John eventually died in 1815. Regarding the movements of Leonard , it is known from the census records that one of his sons, Jephtha Cgle, was born c. 1802 in South Carolina, so it might be assumed that he was still present in Lancaster co., SC in that year. However , Leonard is not listed in the 1800 census of Lancaster Co., and later in this series it will be considered whether he was the Leonard Cagle who appeared in the 1800 census of Moore Co., NC. Leonard's next known appearance in the records of Lancater Co. was in 1812, when he appeared as a signer on a citizens' petition. then, in 1817, he sold a large tract of land in Lancaster Co. followed by the sale of a smaller tract in 1824, which marks his last known appearance in the records of that county. Following below are abstracts of the deeds of 1817 and 1824; then, consideration will be given to Leonard's possible residence in the counties of Moore, Montgomery and Anson North Carolina, during the era of 1798 to 1817. Book I, page 10: , Jan 18, 1817 . State of SC, Lancaster County . Leonard Cagle to Elijah Phillips, 460 Acres for $540. "Begining at a Black Jack Corner, thence along Baker's line Bird's Branch, to Paul Hagler's line, along a row of Marked trees to the head of Saw Scaffle Branch, down branch to foot of a Little Mountain, thence along John Hough's Line and along Massey's line, to Beginning " Witnesses: James J. Douglas Leonard Cagle Daniel Clarke Provied by Daniel Clarke, March 20, 1817. Recorded April 16, 1817 (It is unclear if this was a part of the 500-ace tract which Leonard Cagle had bought in Lancaster co. in 1797; See June Issue, p 4 ). (I will the somemore on the e-mail)

Adam Cagle 1803-1888!! This is the first census where my cousin and I have read about a Pleas Cagle. As you probably know from earlier postings, we are desperate for any info. I am not a shark on reading Census', sorry all it does to me is confuse me. Our grandfather was Pleas or Pleasant Chapman Cagle, born 1880 in Tunnel Hill. We know now without a doubt that his fathers name was the same. We also have a Sophia as a sister listed. Pleas C. Cagle Senior was married to Mary Ann Wallace, who is the mother of Pleas C. Cagle Jr. Does any of this fit into this census you've posted? If you (I know you are smarter than me with Census') can shed a little light, we will forever be gratefull to you.
