I descend from Leonhardt Kegel/Cagle through Henry and Catherine, then Mary and Andrew Auman/Orman, Henry Orman and Nancy, Elizabeth and William Houk, Lucy Anna Houk and Harvey Daniel Beatty, Hester Alice Beatty and Earl Edwin Merryman. My dad had Nancy as Kaggy. I found a lady who gave me a keagy name but the man doing that family never answered my query. I had somewhere that her name was Lyle. Think a son said that. I had seen Cagle written so it looked like Lyle so I wondered. I finally decided on Cagle. Some time ago I came in contact with Olene Cagle who assured me my Nancy Orman was the daughter of William and Mary Barrett Cagle and a sister to ner husband George's ancestor, George, so she was Henry Orman's cousin. What is your opinion. Ed Edwin C. Merryman edchme@bellatlantic.net --part1_e798a1d9.2471b2d3_boundary--

I'm looking for information on Sarah Cagle born about 1813 in N.C. She married Christopher Denman in 1827 in Franklin Co., Ga. I found a Leonard Cagle on a deed record in Franklin and Sarah named her son James Leonard. Is it likely she was a daughter of one of the Leonard Cagles that showed up in Georgia about the same time? I got back from OK, and AR, had to keep my running shoes on those tornadoes was bad experience for me. My friend lived at Moore, OK, I started calling Monday and by Wednesday I got her they were ok. The dogwoods were near all gone, the blackberries were in full bloom and those trees that have white clusters were in bloom this tree has long green beans. The Junk-Tiquets shops were in full swing. Went to the Court House at Ozark, AR, and, got a few Cagle marriages so I could copy and put in my book. I have Cagle Marriages from 1867-1983 for Franklin County, AR, I was going to put this at the CAGLE home page but could not remember how to do it. So, if anyone wants a look up just e-mail me. He may well have been a chief of a small break away tribe. You can see how he may have fallen in love with a Cherokee woman. With her long black hair, high cheek bones, and dark complexion. Any off spring to this couple would be one half Cherokee & one half Anglo Saxon. Hence how the hurtful term half breed came about. Mabey this was why they rode through town rasing cain:) Then the childrens children would be 1/4 Cherokee blood. By the time it gets to our generation there isn't much left. Earl
HI Earl and List, we never have been able to link Pleas to the 1850 census in Tennesse, not yet anyway. I've kept it on file. Our Pleas' are just really a hart nut to crack. I tend to side with your opinion about the Indian Heritage, Earl, however the family has so many stories (hearsake I believe) that I am just pursuing every angle. Here is the story about Chief Charlie Monta Zoma Cagle.......for whatever it is worth: CHIEF CHARLIE MONTA ZOMA CAGEL FULL CHEROKEE BORN SOMETIME BETWEEN 1820-1830 According to the American Indian Council (?) there was a small band of Cherokee's that broke away from the large Cherokee nation. They settled in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and later in Tennesee, Nebraska and Illinois. This was before the war between white man and the Cherokee Tribal Nation. Some, that broke away are listed by numbers on the Miller Rolls. Upon loosing the war the last of the Cherokee Indians that survived the Trail of Tears were forced onto the Cherokee Reservation, given numbers on rolls called the "Five Civilized Tribes". This took place in the years 1899-1906. The five civilized Tribes are also known as the Dawson Rolls (?). The small bands that broke away picked new Chiefs, traveling far away to keep out of the reach of the Military. They later took on the white mans ways. Such was Chief Charlie Monta Zoma Cagle. He settled with his family in Johnson County, Illinois, believed to be in Thebes or Buck (Thebes is in Alexander County) His wife was believed to be full Indian. They had four children: Sophie: died in 1930 with stomach cancer Joseph: nothing known about him Pleas Chapman: born 7/24/81 died 7/23/42 (this would be our grandfather) Buddy: born after Pleas, dates unknown. It was known that he died of Dopssy and Heart trouble. Buddy was a hell raiser in his youth. Him and Pleas would ride their horses down the street of town yelling and shooting out the street lights. This was before the town had sidewalks and used oil lamps. Pleas Sr. Cagle aka Chief Charlie lost his wife when his son Pleas was 6, that would have been in 1887. She had fixed a family reunion dinner. Everyone had just finished eating when she leaned forward, dying instantly with a heart attack. Pleas raised his children alone. He died in Johnson County, Illinois. Cause of death was during a tellible storm when a limb broke off from a tree, crashing into his chest. He was 61. His son Pleas would later die almost the same way. I don't quite believe all of the above, other that the family wrote it.. Our grandfather Pleas did die when he was poisining tree stumps for a company in Holland, MO. A tree hit him in the head and he died of a crushed skull. These are facts, we have funeral records and newspaper articles to proof it. Unfortunatley, the last of grandfather Pleas' children died last months......the last one of this generation. sandra b.

The five stations which Ben Cagle built were moved from Altmont and are still used by the Tracy City Masonic Lodge. The narrative of the Cagle family was obtained from the Cagle family Bibles and compiled by the wife of Berton Benjamin Cagle , Great-grandson of Ben Cagle. Ben died on April 07, 1891 at Beersheba and is buried in the Armstong Cemetery, Irving College . At the time of his death , his property totlaed 6.2 acres, it was known as the "orchard " but also a Tanney and Lumber MIll. He willed everthing to his three daughters and his widow, Mary, who died in 1912. Cagle grandchildren refer to her as "Granny Shackle". Local residents recall that two elderly ladies operated a children's gift shop in the Cagle house on Dahigren Avenue , about 1916 or 1917. Three or four years later, A. M. Harris lived there briefly when he came from Alabama to run the saw mill. He also operated a small grocery store in th building which now houses the museum. It is interesting to note that Ben Cagle originally acquired his property at a court sale. (clerk and master ) in 1866 and 54 years later (1902) it was sold at a court by the Cagle hiers in a Partition Suit . The new owners were W. Hi list, This query is for Earl but please everybody feel free to add your opinions. Nancy Jane(bless her) sent 2 parts to the list on Tabitha Cagle's(suppostion)aancestors. I have been going through my Cagle folder and can't find any information on a Leonard b:1770-d:1840. Has something been written that I didn't save or is this a different Leonard entirely. Nancy Jane's info came from John Cagle. Is anyone researching this Cagle? Children: Jeptha 1805 Eli 1807 Henry 1820 William ? no date(may not belong to Leonard) Tabitha 1822 Leonard fits for Tabitha because he was in Cobb Co., Ga in 1840 and Tabitha married Reuben Tucker Hill in 1839 in Cobb Co., and there first child was born there in 1840(a girl). Please add to or enlighten me on all of this. Thanks in advance, Mollie Charles Pawlik Texas
