I am all for sorting out the early generations of, Cagle's. This however, is not an easy task to sort out. There is very little early documentation as to births. There are census records, but as you all know these didn't start until 1790. Baptismal records are helpful but are hard to find. There is to my knowledge only two children proven to Leonhart. He & his first wife Maria Elisabetha, had their daughter Maria Margareta, confirmed in 1729, in Sembach, Germany. She was 14 yrs. old at the time of her confimation. This would put her born abt. 1715. Then Leonhart & Susanna, had their son Johhan Theobald Kegel, baptised on 2 may 1728. His date of birth is given as 29 April 1728. It is felt by myself & John G. Cagle, that all of their children were on board the "Loyal Judith". As to their sons nobody knows for sure. As an example besides the Maria Margareta, were there any sons born to this first marriage? Anyone on this list is welcome to work on the early generations. My sugestion however, is to start with one generation. This of course being the children born to Leonhart, Maria, & Susannah. Earl
Please help welcome another new member to the Cagle list. Tony Cagle, welcome to the list and as you will find there are alot of freindly hekpful folks. Please list your Cagle's, and we wish you the best. Earl Cagle List owner - CAGLE-L
The wills of Henry & John "Dutchman" Cagle, are a wealth of data. These are very helpful to those who are decended from them. One thing to keep in mind is the era in which these Cagle's, were born. My ancestor as were Henry, John, David, George, and others were of the same generation. Being sons of Leonhart, they were all born in the same era. This being the late 1720's to the early 1740's. So in effect when several had the same first name, you have to use dates of birth, death, and other data to seperate one, from the other. Earl

Thank you, LaMona, for listing the will for Henry Cagle, Sr. I thought that I was the only one who had gotten confused in trying to sort out these postings. I also would like to see the first three generations re-posted along with the documentation whenever it is possible. I may be a descendant of "Henry Cagle", but I am confused to just which one. I would be so happy to finally learn for sure just who I am and where I came from, ha ha. Nadeen

Lee, The reference to Kegel as meaning "bowling pin" reminded me of something I hadn't heard in a long time. When I was much younger, bowlers were sometimes referred to as "keglers." I didn't question it at the time but obviously this is where it originated. Jim Nix Le Roy A Cagle wrote: > > List: > > The first known people to acquire surnames were the Chinese. Mary Ella: I cannot vouch for the accuracy because I have no source documents. All of this came from list postings. Also, I am not sure but, I think Henry may have left a will which names his children. But, again I may have him confused with someone else. Henry (according to what has been posted) has the following children: William C. abt 1754 Christian Christopher abt 1761 Inna Caterana bef 1765 (may be your "Caterana") Elizabeth 14 April 1766 Mary bef 1767 David bef 1774 Peter 1775 Henry Jr 1781 (I doubt the accuracy of this one, these two Henrys have different wives.) Hi, Saw your query regarding the first three generations of Cagles. I did post a message on this question some time ago as I noted the many inconsistencies in the various postings. It is my opinion, based upon a preponderance of evidence from the last few years of published research, that the best answer for the first two generations are those suggested by John G. Cagle. My previous posting is attached for your convenience. I will appreciate any and all comments. Jimmy B. Cagle Long Beach, MS Subj: Re: Cagle Wills Date: 1/22/99 3:31:56 PM Central Standard Time From: JBCagle@aol.com To: CAGLE-L@rootsweb.com Re Earl's post "Cagle Wills" 12-21-98 I am in agreement with those who propose we work on the first three generations of Cagles in America. I applaud you for highlighting this need. I have often noticed the differing generations in which individuals have appeared. It is a given the third generation will always be suspect if there is doubt about the second. There seems to be differing views as to who were the Children of Leonhart. I would like to hear comments on the theory John G. Cagle advanced regarding the children of Leonhart as: Leonard b. 1730s-1800s John Dutchman Cagle d. 1799 Moore Co., NC Henry Cagle, Sr. d. 1802 Moore Co., NC David Cagle 1728-1780s Cabarrus Co., NC Charles Cagle Stanley Co., NC George Cagle d 1825 Stanley Co., NC (See CAGLE JOURNAL OF HISTORICAL INQUIRY, July 1994, page 9) I believe John G. has advanced this theory at later periods in the Journal, but at the moment do not know the issue. Thanks to Lee Cagle for expressing the same confusion I have been feeling about the CAGLE line! It would be great if we could reach concensus on these first generations, noting, of course, that some points may still be in contention. My particular concern involves Caterana, the daughter (?) of Henry Cagle and Caterena Seitz. Also, is there any proof that Henry and Caterana had a son named David? Thanks for any help the list can give me to clear up some of my confusion. Mary in SC maryrella@aol.com

List: Some time back the question was raised as to the accuracy of the postings of the first three generations of Cagles. Was any concensus of opinions decided. If so, would someone please post them. I would like to be on the same sheet of music with everyone else, if possible. I know this is a difficult area but, if our most reliable researcher would post his/hers (Earl, since you are the Administrator, I would recommend you), then we could all use this posting until someone else comes up with source documents to prove it wrong, then after agreement, that information could be posted, recommending all change their previous post. I have been trying to reconcile all the previous posts and I have the first three generations so confused I fear without help, I will never get them straight, i.e., I now have Old Leonard with 12 children. Maybe, working three generations is too much. Maybe only one generation at a time would be best. I don't know. When I first began this project, I thought, "Boy, this is going to be easy." I dumbly posted all the messages as I received them. Now I have some children with as many as three different sets of parents. I have some fathers with as many as four wifes and some with children but, no wives. What a mess. HELP!! Ancient Pennsylvania Landmarks Known to Leonhart Kegel, 1732-54 Era Oley Township, Berks County, PA Oley Township, a few miles east of Reading, in Berks co., PA, is te only township in America which has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, as an entire Township. Its settlement dates back as far as 1699, and it ancient German and French Huguenot homesteads have building standing dated from 1706. It was already a generation old, and a thriving settlement, when the Cagles arrived from Germany in 1730s; and was nearly a half-century old when John "Dutchman" Cagle lived in Oley in the early 1750s. Leonhart Kegel, the 1732 immigrant, and believed to be father of John "Dutchman" Cagle, acquired land in Oley Twonship in 1737; at that time, however, old Oley Township encompassed more territory than does the present Oley Twp., and section in which Leonhart lived was later made into Alsace Township. The economy of Oley Twonship was based, originally, on farming in the broad Oley Valley, and on iron-working in the scenic hills which ring the valley. Of the iron furnaces and forges in Oley, perhaps the most famous was that of Iaeger Family (later Anglicized to "Hunter"), headed by Nicholas Hunter. In an obscure court case, dating for 1753, Berks Co. records sho that Nicholas Henter, on one occasion, filed sutie against a JOhn Kegle, believed to be John "Dutchman" Cagle, who later moved to North Carolina in 1754-55. Oldest homestead in Oley is that of Johannes Keim, built 1706; he was the ancestor of the Kime family of Guilford Co., NC. Oley Township furnished a number of families to central North Carolina during the 1740s adn 1750s including the Keim, Cagle, and Stutts Families. (The Nicholas Hunter homestead in Oley Twp., neat the ruins of the famed Oley Forge. The Oley Lutheran Church stands nearby, but its early recors are lost. The two churches, identical in construction, stand on either side of a common parking lot, and share a common graveyard. From date of founding in 1732, until construction of the present buildings in 1907, the two congrrefations worshipped in a single building, at alternatin times, under a "Union Church" arrangement. The Alsace churches stand on the homestead of Dewalt Baum, closest neighbor of Leonhart Cagle, during Leonard's period of residence, 1737-1748, in Alsace Twonship. The Cagles may will have been members of the Alsace Lutheran Church, but this cannot be verified, as early records of the Church have been lost. There is a replica of the original Alsace Church building, which served the congragtion form ca.1737-1753; replaced by a stone church in 1753. The log church was in use during the period of Leonard Cagle's residence in the township, and stood about a quarter-mile from his home. The present Alsace Lutheran Church, in use since 1907. and identical building, standing adjacent, is the German Ref. church. Here is a paragraph from the published history of the Alsace Church describes the expansion of the Church in the era of 1748-1754. Boy Earl, I'm not sure I could have figured that out. My question is... What does that make us? Tom PS It also reminds my wife Debbie and me of a song her father used to love to sing. I'm sure some of you have heard it but here it is for your amusement: I'M MY OWN GRANDPA Many many years ago, when I was twenty-three, I was married to a widow as pretty as can be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life, For my daughter was my mother, for she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby thus became a brother-in-law to Dad, And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter, who of course was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run, And he became my grandchild for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue, Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too! Oh, if my wife's my grandmother then I am her grandchild, And every time I think of it it nearly drives me wild. For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw - As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa. (Chorus) I'm my own grandpa I'm my own grandpa It sounds funny I know, but it really is so I'm my own grandpa.
