Jim, Until the 1728 birth date of David Cagle was found recently, he was thought to have been born in the 1710's. Some of his children whose dates also were not known (and still aren't) were considered to be older than perhaps they actually were. Valentine was one of those. I have a question also. Was there more that one Valentine? Tonight, I have seen Valentine listed as a son of David and a son of John "Dutchman." The will of John "Dutchman" does not mention a Valentine. I believe this confusion has come about because some have assumed that Johan Theobald Cagle was identical to John "Dutchman" Cagle, when in reality Johan Theobald Cagle and "David Cagle" are one and the same. This Name has been explained by John G. Cagle in "The Cagle Journal." My opinion is and has been that Valentine was the son of David. I hope someone has proof one way or the other. Nancy Jane, A very good job, thanks much. I have a question. This is the first time I have seen the death date of April 01, 1793 for David Cagle. Also, I had thought that he was living in Cabarrus Co., NC at the time of death. Has new information surfaced? see excerpt: 1. Johan Theobald "David" Kegel *2 Cagle ((Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard *1) was born April 29, 1728 in Obermehlingen, Germany, and died April 01, 1793 in Moore County, North Carolina. He married Katherine (Unknown) * Cagle Abt. 1739 in Moore County, North Carolina. 7 vi. Henry (Sr.) Cagle, born 1762 in Rowen County, North Carolina; died 1837 in Hardin County , Tennessee. He married Waggoner. I am a descendent of David Cagle through son Henry Cagle, Sr., 1862-1837. I will be happy to share with anyone interested in this particular line. Debra, It is my opinion, and I believe that of most, that John "Dutchman" Cagle and David Cagle were brothers. John G. Cagle in his "Cagle Journal" has determined that David Cagle was born in Germany in 1728. The first record of John "Dutchman" Cagle apparently is a Tax record in Berks Co., PA ca 1752-54. These brothers, and others of their family moved to NC ca 1754. Valentine is thought to be the son of David. The will of John "Dutchman Cagle shows: George, Jacob, Henry, Elizabeth Gilmore, Mary Melton, John, William, Susanna, Dorety, and Margaret. Hello all, Please welcome Richard & Wife, to the mail list. They are researching a David Cagle, and will need your help. Richard, we have a very good group of folks on our list. They are well versed in Cagle research, and are willing to share. Welcome, and we wish you great success in your research. Earl
Looks like we are off to a good start on, Leonhart's children. Due to the lack of records in Germany, we have to use what was available in the USA. We would all love to find marriage, baptismal, school, land and other records. These records at one time, existed in Germany. Due to all types of disasters, they were destroyed. There are however, records in Germany yet to be found. One of the keys to identifing his children in the USA, are records found when these young men became of age. Once they married, bought & sold land, joined the armed forces, etc; then they could be placed. At one time there were several family bibles. Henry [2] Cagle, Sr. ca.1730s/1802 was one of the original pioneers of Moore County, NC, settling in that region in the 1760s when it was still a part of old Cumberland County, (Moore Co., was formed in 1784). Henry was situated on Little Buffalo Creek by 1768, but during the 1770s moved into the extreme N.W. part of the county, on upper Bear creek, where Moore County, joins the counties of Montgomery and Randolph. During the next quarter century Henry Sr. acquired multiple tracks of land on the Bear creek several of which were land grants from the State of North Carolina. During the 1790s he also assisted his oldest sons in acquiring land grants in the Will of 1802 he made provision for his land holdings to be divided at the time of his death primarily among his youngest sons. His Will named eight sons, and are listed thought to be in order below. The 1802 Will of Henry Cagle, Sr. Moore County, North Carolina, named his eight sons. 1st part of Henry's Will was recorded in Will Book "A" page 224 Moore County, NC. 2nd part of Henry's Will named his two daughters, and they were listed below. Caterana Cockman, listed as "daughter-in-law" in Henry's Will, but probably a step-daughter, by his wife Caterana Cockmans 1st marriage. Has not been proved. Nancy, et al, This is the line that is most confusing to me (and is also my line through Valentine Cagle, Sr. - "Velti"). There are baptismal records confirming the birth of Johann Theobald Kegel ("David Cagle") in 1728. However, the children that are being attributed to him have birthdates that start in 1740. I assume that he didn't marry at age 11. By the same token, I have seen birthdates for Valentine, Sr. that show him being born in the mid-1750's. That would make more sense. Can anyone explain this discrepancy? Jim Nix Njbalmer@aol.com wrote: > > Descendants of Johan Theobald "David" Kegel * Cagle > > Generation No. 1 > > 1. To the question of Inna Caterana Cagle. I've had a copy of Henry Cagle, Sr's will for4 a very long time. It is only in the last few weeks that I have seen Caterana reffered to as Inna. I found, some time ago, that in that time period, a step child was called daughter-in-law or son-in-law quite often. It is my feeling Henry Cagle, Sr. married twice both Catherines or Caterana. Main reason is I've seen Catherine Seitz born ca 1732 son William born 1754 son Martin 1789. If the unconfirmed birth date is correct Martin's is either suspect or Catherine's is. Good morning list! Being fairly new to this great list, green behind the ears in the area of genealogy, and in awe of all the vast information being exchanged on this list, I felt a little stupid to ask such simple questions to clear up my confusion. Now with the three generations emails, I will ask. I come up through Valentine and Valentine Jr lines. My question: did John Dutchman have a brother named David? On this list, other websites, and libraries, have information saying that John Dutchman had a brother named David, some say he did not, some inferred to David as the presumed brother, and I have also read that John Dutchman was also called David. I am trying to establish whether I come through David or John Dutchman. Any help would be appreciated. Debra

David's entry shows that his tract of 100 Acres lay "about a quarter of a mile from " John Caygills, Plantation " John was situated at the forks of Bear and Cavin Creeks (where he remained until his death in 1799). David was situated on Flat Creek, which appently was a small tributary of either Bear or Cavin Creek. David Cagle is known to have ties to three North Carolina regions: (1) Old Rowan County, 1760, and perhaps also 1750s. Descendants of (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard * Cagle Generation No. 1 1. (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard *1 Cagle was born 1684 in Obermehlingen, Germany, and died 1754 in Brecknock Township , Berks County, Pennsylvinia. He married (1) Maria Elizabeth (Unkown ) Cagle in Germany. He married (2) (Susanna Kegell ) Susanna * Cagle 1721 in Obermehlingen , Germany. Notes for (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard * Cagle: Leonard Kegel, Leonard Cagle: In German Leonhart, Leonhardt, Leinhart, means a shape of a bowling pin, a shape of a cone, or a pin. also means brave heart. Leonhart was married two times. His first wife was Maria Elisabeth (deceased) last name unknown, Maria was born in 1687, and from Niedermehlingen, Germany. Together they had a daughter named Maria Margareta, born in the year 1715. It has been said there was another child born of this marriage, but there is nothing to prove or disprove this information. Confirmation Register 1729; Maria Margareta, the daughter of Leonhart Kegel, Reformed and his deceased wife Maria Elisabeth, Reformed of Niedermenlingen, Germany. daughter 14 years old. (Margareta Maria, Her real name was Maria Margarita, and her name was changed because of her mothers death. ) It is not known if Margareta Maria came to America with the family. Leonhart second marriage: Leonhart Kegel , his second wife was Susannah and her last name is unknown . They were married in Germany. Leonhart was born 1684 and was from Obermehlingen, Germany, and he was married in Germany to Susannah unknown . Susannah was born in the year 1688 and from Obermehlingen, Germany. 1728, Baptism was found on : Childs name Johan Theoblad, born the 29 of April and Baptised 1st of May. Sponcers names, Theobald Fuchs, The sponser from Alsenbon, and his wife Christina. Andreas Busch from Trippstadt, Reformed. Parnents names Leonhart Kegel and his wife Susanna Kegel, Reformed from Obermehlingen, Germany. Baptism : 1728: Baptismal register 1728 ,Trippstadt, the 14th of March Johann Andreas Buschung, and his wife Maria Elisabetha, a daughter baptised and named Maria Elisabetha. God parents Leonhart Kegel of Mehlingen, Germany, and Maria Magdalena, Johann Henrich Schmalenberger's Young wife Veronica Phillipp . Leonhart Kegell , (Leonard Cagle), his wife Susanna and their family , and other members of the Reformed Lutherans , left Mehlingen, Germany to bring their familys to America (Mehlingen is 8m- N.E. of Kaiserslautern, on B40) they went down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland, they then took the ship called the Loyal Judith Via Cowes England, then from there to the Port of Philadelphia PA. and landed September 25, 1732. According to English speaking Captians and Port officials and others and by the German Immigrants themselves. There were 119 Palentine men and their families, and they were accompanied by a Lutheran Minister, named was Johannes Christian Schultz. When the immigrants landed in the Port of Philadelphia, each of the head of household on board and any on the age of 16 and older were taken to that the Oath of Allegiance to the provice and State of Pennsylvania. (Leonharts children would not have been old enough to be on the list. I think William would have been the oldest son, and he would have only been around ten or so. and the daughter would not have been on the list if she came to America because she was a female.) (The information will be in the Colonial records Vol III, on page 457, ) They did have a language problem and thats was why there was a problem with the spelling of there names, and there was more than one person putting their names on different lists. Who ever was putting there names down spelled them the way they thought it should be, thats why names are spelled in different ways on these lists. Leonhart's name was spelled two different ways on the passenger list, The German Settlers were all industrious, econmical, and thrifty famers, they were not afraid , nor ashamed of hard work, When Leonhart Kegel arrived in Philadephia County, they settled , and bought land in Berks County, PA. . The first settlement by Germans was about 1734, and organized in 1752, this became the the Capital of Reading. The name Berks County Was derived form Berks County, England. There was a man named Henrich Krehenhull , who changed his name to Henry Graybill Jr. who also lived in Mehlingen, Germany , the same time as did Leonhart and his family. Henry Graybill Jr. lived in Lancaster county, PA. and later moved to Hancock County, GA. (not sure if he came over on the same ship, as did Leonhart ?) It is not known if Leonhart and Susanna died in PA. , or moved with sons to North Carolina ?. Leonhart Kegel had a large black hat , he wore most of the time , he handed the hat down to his son John "Dutchman" Kegel , who died 1799 in North Carolina . John "Dutchman" handed the hat down to his youngest son , William who was born 1788-1860. William passed the hat down to his son Isaac, who was born 1790-1860. Isaac gave the hat to his oldest son John Westley , who in turn handed it down to his brother Spinks. Spinks then gave the hat to his sister , who sold the hat to Neil Isaac Andrew Cagle , he in turn gave the the hat to Bob Baker who donated the Hat to the Rocky Mt. Museum. (I have seen a photo of the hat, it looks like a big top hat.) and is still in the museum. There was also a chair that Leonhart would stand on while waiting for his father to come home from work. This chair was also donated to a Museum , (Not the same Museum.) and this Museum later burned down , this Museum was in PA. , so there must have been some of his children and or grandchildren who stayed in PA. Leonhart Kegel was the ancestor of Americans numbering some 17,000 , individuals, plus. Thousands of other desendents who bear other surnames. It was not uncommon for German people to be known by more than one name, since they used there middle names. It has been said that the Kegel's changed the spelling of their names when they moved to North Carolina Leonhart owned 200 acre tact of land on 11 October 1737 in Alsace Township, Berks County, PA. In the year 1748 Leonhart vacated his homestead in Alsace and moved a few miles distant ot Brecknock Township, Berks County, Leonhart is said to have died about 1754 in Brecknock Township, Berks County, PA. (Oley was next to Alsace) Ancient Pennsylvania Landmarks Known to Leonhart Kegel, 1732-54 Oley Township, Berks County, PA Oley Township, a few miles east of Reading, in Berks co., PA, is the only township in America which has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, as an entire Township. Its settlement dates back as far as 1699, and it ancient German and French Huguenot homesteads have building standing dated from 1706. It was already a generation old, and a thriving settlement, when the Cagles arrived from Germany in 1730s; and was nearly a half-century old when John "Dutchman" Cagle lived in Oley in the early 1750s. Leonhart Kegel, the 1732 immigrant, and believed to be father of John "Dutchman" Cagle, acquired land in Oley Township in 1737; at that time, however, old Oley Township encompassed more territory than does the present Oley Twp., and section in which Leonhart lived was later made into Alsace Township. The economy of Oley Township was based, originally, on farming in the broad Oley Valley, and on iron-working in the scenic hills which ring the valley. Of the iron furnaces and forges in Oley, perhaps the most famous was that of Iarger Family (later Anglicized to "Hunter"), headed by Nicholas Hunter. In an obscure court case, dating for 1753, Berks Co. records sho that Nicholas Hunter, on one occasion, filed suite against a John Kegle, believed to be John "Dutchman" Cagle, who later moved to North Carolina in 1754-55. Oldest homestead in Oley is that of Johannes Keim, built 1706; he was the ancestor of the Kime family of Guilford Co., NC. Oley Township furnished a number of families to central North Carolina during the 1740s adn 1750s including the Keim, Cagle, and Stutts Families. (The Nicholas Hunter homestead in Oley Twp., neat the ruins of the famed Oley Forge. The Oley Lutheran Church stands nearby, but its early recors are lost. One of the most memorable sights in the city of Reading, Berks Co., PA, is Alsace Hill in the northern part of town, capped by the twin towers of the Alsace Lutheran and Alsace German Reformed Churches. The two churches, identical in construction, stand on either side of a common parking lot, and share a common graveyard. From date of founding in 1732, until construction of the present buildings in 1907, the two congrrefations worshipped in a single building, at alternatin times, under a "Union Church" arrangement. The Alsace churches stand on the homestead of Dewalt Baum, closest neighbor of Leonhart Cagle, during Leonard's period of residence, 1737-1748, in Alsace Township. The Cagles may will have been members of the Alsace Lutheran Church, but this cannot be verified, as early records of the Church have been lost. There is a replica of the original Alsace Church building, which served the congragtion form ca1737-1753 replaced by a stone church in 1753. The log church was in use during the period of Leonard Cagle's residence in the township, and stood about a quarter-mile from his home. The present Alsace Lutheran Church, in use since 1907. and identical building, standing adjacent, is the German Ref. church. Here is a paragraph from the published history of the Alsace Church describes the expansion of the Church in the era of 1748-1754. In 1748, the year of the founding of Reading, PA, Leonard Cagle, vacted his homstead in Alsace and move a few miles distant to Brecknock Township, in Berks Co. Notes : David Cagle, and his presumed brother John "Dutchman" Cagle, Acquired land near the same time in early 1764, David's by land entry (April 21, ) and John's purchase from James Cheney (Feb. 3). David's survey, of 100 acres, dose not seem to border directly on any previously owned land, and county, seems to have been sparsely populated at that early date. in 1769, David sold is track of land to William Smith , and moved westward to what is now Cabarrus County, North Carolina. David Cagle is known to have ties to three North Carolina regions: (1) Old Rowan County, 1760, and perhaps also 1750s. Probably lived somewhere along Deep River, either in Randolph of Guilford, was on tax list , sometime in 1760s, with son John , (2) Old Cumberland County, had land paten at forks of Bear and Cabin Creeks in 1767, which he sold in 1769. (3) Cabarris County, then part of Mecklenburg, had land entry in 1779, maybe died there in 1780s. Children of Johan Cagle and Katherine Cagle are: 2 i. Keagle, , John Sr. 000001-00001 (D-1826, Robertson County Tennessee) John Cagle Sr. 1740-1826 As the story was told John's daughter Mary Ann was a young girl, and was walking on the Boardwalk of Nashville, Tennessee 1809 . When Felix , son of Nashville's pioneer, Jacques Timothe Bauchrer Demunbreun. Timothy Demunbreun Declared " IF that is not spoken for she will be my wife. Mary Ann had indian ancestry, thus explaining her know repution as a Excellent mid-wife. and indian Herbologist. thus Mary ann Cagle Demunbreun may have learned her Herb-doctoring from an indian Mother or a indian grandmother. As the story goes, The Cagle family, while living in North Carolina, took in a indian girl, considered terminally ill by her indian tribe , later the indian girl recovered and married one of the Cagles sons. John Cagle Sr. was married twice, first to Mary , last name unknown. Second time to Margaret Hardwick. 4 iii. LaMona, Thanks for the HenryCagle, Sr., d. 1802, information. I read again the copy of Henry's will you sent earlier and fail to find any mention of this daughter, "Inna Catherana Cagle," or a son, "David Cagle." + 4 iii. Inna Catherana Cagle, born Abt. 1765 in Moore County, North Carolina; died in Moore County, North Carolina. 4. Inna Catherana3 Cagle (Henrich "Henry"2, (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard *1) was born Abt. 1765 in Moore County, North Carolina, and died in Moore County, North Carolina. She married Joseph (Sr.) Cockman Abt. 1780 in Moore County, North Carolina. 10 ix. David Cagle, born Bef. 1774; died Bef. 1800. He married Catherina Cockman. In my mind, if there is any confusion with the family of Henry Cagle, Sr., d. 1802, these two children would be it. Does someone have some sort of proof? Mary in SC, You have a good question that has been around for a while now. I think Henry Cagle, Sr., d. 1802, son of Leonhart the emmigrant, is a very good place to start. Henry's will, as per John G. Cagle, does not show a David, but does show: William, Christian, Henry, Peter, John, Jacob, George, Martin, two daughters, Eliza Hubbard, Mary Auman and Daughter-in-law Caterana Cockman. I guess the question is who was the husband of Caterana Cockman if she was a daughter-in-law? Was she married to a deceased son of Henry or was she a daughter of the (a) wife of Henry from a previous marriage to a Cockman? Or was the daughter Caterana, at time of the will, married to a Cockman. That is about a 4-way question. Surely someone close to this family can answer some of these questions.
