    3. List: I don't know if this is a clue or not; however, I show a David Crockett Cagle b. May 11, 1835 who moved to LeFlore County, Oklahoma where he eventually died in 1923. He had a son Virgil W. b. Nov 1, 1879. This Virgil grew up in Oklahoma which was hard hit by the depression and the dust bowl devastation of the 20s and early 30s as depicted in the book "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. The Virgil in question may well be the son of Virgil W. who may be one of the many who fled Oklahoma for better fortunes in the Golden West. What do you think? Maybe someone in this line has current information. Lee Cagle Moore, OK " THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC" Newspaper. Sunday,June 20, 1999 [ Obituaries ] Virgil "Gene" Cagle, 62, of Tolleson,Az. 3. --------- Begin forwarded message ---------- From: caglel1 To: dwchambers@mindspring.com Subject: Re: William Samuel Cagle Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 13:17:29 -0500 Message-ID: <19990620.131730.4406.0.caglel1@juno.com> References: <3.0.1.32.19990620080928.006bfe8c@mindspring.com> Good Morning and Happy Father's Day: Reference the marriage license on file in Haralson County concerning William Samuel and Mary C. Hughes dated 29 July 1866. I note Samuel was taken prisoner during the Civil War and repatriated (discharged) from prison on May 8, 1865, a little more than a year before the above marriage. His second marriage to Sara E. Ray, daughter of Union Army Captain James and Sarah E. Ray, never occurred until September 14, 1874, almost 10 years later. According to Gerolyn Gordan, this Samuel Cagle and Mary C. Hughes, first supposed wife, appeared in the 1870 Census of Saint Francis County, Arkansas with wife Mary along with two daughters, Mary, born 1868 in Tennessee, and Sarah, born 1870 in Arkansas. Gerolyn surmises that since Benjamin Franklin Cagle Jr and wife, Anna (Cook) were nearby and the ages and birthplaces fit, it seems certain they were sons of Benjamin and Parthena. In my opinion, I believe this was the case. Also, Benjamin Jr married Anna Cook in Alabama abt 1868 and moved to Tennessee. I note Samuel and Mary C. Hughes were living in Tennessee at that time because Mary, Samuel and Mary's first daughter was born there in the same year. Is this coincidence or didBenjamin follow Samuel to Tennessee. It isn't clear which, Samuel or Benjaminmoved to Arkansas first but, they both end up there living near each other. I think this is more than coincidence. Also, Samuel's and Mary's children were named Mary and Sarah which are the names of two of Samuel's sisters. There is a pattern here, remember Augustus also, named two of his daughters for sisters Caroline and Laura. Samuel named another of his daughters by wife #2, Frances, another sister. William Marcus "Jackson" named two of his daughters for sisters, Susan and Florence. I note too, the names are not repeated by any of the brothers so, it was consciously intended. It also, indicates they remained in contact with each other over a period of years at least to the extent that they knew the names of the other's children because none of the sister's names were repeated by other brothers. Have I convinced you? Maybe, I am just too suspicious because of Ben Jr and Augustus' escapades. Let me know what you find out. I am very curious about the two daughters of Samuel's by Mary C. Hughes, particularly if she died. Lee Cagle Moore, OK P.S. Maybe we will get some information as to Samuel's whereabouts for the 10 yr span between the time he was released from prison and his marriage to Sarah E. Ray. We may also, learn what prompted his move to Washington (if not for the fact, it is about as far as you can go from Arkansas). Samuel may have been the first to cut and run without benefit of a divorce, setting the example for Benjamin and Augustus. Or as you said, Mary may have died but, if this is the case, what became of the children Mary b. 1868 in Tennessee and Sarah b. 1870 in Arkansas. --------- End forwarded message ---------- ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. 3. Back at you Earl and List, and thanks for the greeting. I am the father of one son and two daughters. I have a total of 11 grandchildren living. I lost two, one grand daughter, who died during surgery at 13mos, to repair a valve in her heart, the other grandson at age 2, to sudden infant death syndrome which is very rare after 12 months. God has blessed me and them, all the remaining grandchildren are healthy, too healthy, in fact, at least energywise. William appeared in the 1790 Census and 1800 census of Moore Co., and in the 1810 censes of Randolph Co. NC. After appearing in the 1815 Randolph Tax List , William disappears from NC records, and is believed to have moved to TN. He location for the 1820 census has not been found. Henry, above , and the younger William , are believed to have been the sons of William Sr. , as were perhaps John N. C. Cagle, and the deceased husband of Polly Cagle. Elijah and the younger John may have been grandsons of William Sr., though all the Cagle family relationships of Sevier County, have yet been worked out. 1840 Sevier , TN Cagle, William 0000000000 -0000100001 p 186 (1850 Sevier, TN) " Henry 010000001 -21101 176 (d.1840s?) 1. Trivia
    2. Le Roy A Cagle
    3. Since we deal with this on a daily basis in Genealogy, I thought you might enjoy this little tidbit of trivia. Lee Cagle Moore, OK What was Plato's last name? The Answer: Plato is a towering figure in the history of philosophy, a pillar of Western thought. So why do we so informally call him by his first name? Or is it his last name? Actually, his real name may not even have been 'Plato,' which is thought to be a nickname. He had a wide forehead-- possibly the first great thinker who really looked smart-- and was apparently dubbed with the Greek word for "broad," plautus. As for his last name, people in ancient Greece didn't have any. They were referred to by their given name and the name of their father. So the man we know as Plato would have been Plato, son of Ariston. 3. William, I have no idea how my name got on that list. But, I will help you if I can. There is a Cagle List that you can subscribe to (no cost) that will help you more than anything else that I know of. To Subscribe you would need to send a message to the following address: CAGLE-L-request@rootsweb.com You need no subject unless one is required to make you e-mail program work, then put a period (.) in the subject box. In the message box write: subscribe That should get you in touch with most people working on the Cagle line. My ancestors came to Hardin Co., Tennessee from NC in the 1820's. I still live in site of the place they settled. Of course, some of the family moved elsewhere over the years. How can I help you with your line? 1. Children of Leonhart Kegel
    2. Earl Cagle
    3. David & List, I am in aggrement with you and others, as to his children. May I also add as a possible son, William Cagle. There was a William Cagle, who left a will in Moore Co; NC; in 1805. This is shown in will book A & page 259. This would place his date of birth in the 1830 -1840 era. Thus putting him in the generation of the birth of the other children. As always I am open for discussion on this idea. To me this William Cagle, could well have been a son of Leonhart's. Earl
