David, My grandmother, wife of Benjamin Jackson Alexander Cagle, had written the birthdates and places of birth for her husband, herself, and her children. I was looking in my Aunt's Bible one day and found this loose leaf sheet of paper and I made notes from it. Since that time, this document has been passed on to another Aunt. I am trying to retrieve this document. It did not have the older generation listed on it. My Grandmother was not very good with spelling, even the children's names were sometimes spelled differently, so I can see how she would misspell the birthplace for her husband. If you ever bump into any information leading to this family, I would greatly appreciate it. These families were sharecroppers therefore they moved quite often. This makes it difficult to trace them. Thanks, Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com
Earl & list, Yes, Earl, this is definitely my grandfather. I certainly do appreciate this information and also your advice. I am just starting my research on this line of the family. I have worked for several years on my other lines but just now starting this one. Thanks, Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com
I read the info about Ida Mae Golightly (Cagle) with a great deal of interest since my g,g, Grandmother was Parthenia Dauze Golightly (Cagle) married to Raleigh J. Cagle. She was born in 1824 in Ala., and he was born in 1826 in Tenn. They moved to Shelby Co., Tenn. and finally settled in Calcasieu Parish, La. I haven't been able to trace the Golightly family. Could these two women be related? I'd appreciate any information. June
David, Thanks for your reply and also for the spelling correction of Cerro Gordo, Tennessee. I had not looked this up in my atlas but had taken it the way it was written in family records. (They had it spelled as it sounds.) Benjamin Jackson Alexander Cagle, b. 12 Oct 1891 in Cerro Gordo, TN. married Precious Zuba Shaw in 1911 in Savannah, Tennessee. (I would love to see a birth record for him, all I have is family records.) I would also like to see a marriage record. Precious Zuba Shaw was b. 7 Jul 1881 in Saltillo, TN. Columbus Silvester Cagle, b. 1873 in Alabama. Married Tempie Ann Whitlow in 1890 in Alabama. Columbus d. 1953 in Venice, Illinois. Benjamin Alexander Cagle (I do not have any dates for him.) Married Elizabeth Ann Wilson or Guthrie. She was b. 1847 and she d, 1905-1909 in Florence, Alabama. James "Jim" Cagle dates unknown, wife may have been Sarah Bird. James is my oldest known Cagle ancestor. I do not know how long they lived in Cerro Gordo, Tennessee. I would appreciate any records of this family from that area. They were in Alabama by 1893. They lived in Winston County Alabama for several years. I would love to be able to take this line back farther. I believe that we are descendants of Leonhart Kegel, because of the names that we have in common, but I have no idea where we connect. If any one sees a connection please let me know. As you can see, I need help with both the Cagle and the Shaw lines. Thank you. Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com
Earl, I was just looking over some old e-mails and found one from you where you said that your mothers maiden name was SHAW. I have a Cagle/Shaw connection in my ancestry as well. I have very little information on my Shaw's but I wanted to see if you have any information in your files that might help me with my Shaw line. Abe Shaw, dates unknown, married Mandy. Mandy died in 1892. I only know of one child for them, a son named David Allen Shaw, b. Feb 1829 in Georgia, d. 10 Feb 1916. David Allen Shaw married Mollie Meridith in 1858. Mollie was b. 10 Jul 1835 in Alabama, d. in 1897. David Allen Shaw & Mollie had the following children: 1. Precious Zuba Shaw, b. 7 Jul 1891 in Saltelo, Tennessee. (my grandmother). She married Benjamin Jackson Alexander Cagle in 1911 in Savannah, Tennessee. He was b. 12 Oct 1891 in Serrogordo, Tenn. 2. Llina Shaw 3. Margaret Shaw 4. Tinnie Shaw After Mollie's death, David Allen Shaw remarried and they had the following children: 5. William Shaw 6. Bessie Shaw 7. Annie Shaw. Do you by any chance have any information that would tie into mine? Thank you. Nadeen nadeen@sofnet.com
Tom & List, As some of you on the list know Coble's, settled in North Carolina as did the Cagle's. Our families and the Coble's, lived among each other. Both being German & understanding each other made it easier to become friends. Charles Cagle Sr; came to Hickman Co; Tn; in the early 1800's. Tom's ancestor was Thomas Cagle Sr; a son of Charles Sr. Mine is through the other son of Charles Sr; Charles Jacob Cagle. Adam Coble and Peter Coble, settled in Hickan Co; Tn; about the same time. Also among the early settlers were Chessor, and Chandler. These families as Tom writes, married among each other. My ancestor Charles Jacob Cagle, may or may not be buried in the Cagle Cemetery in Hickman Co, I along with my wife have been to Coble, Tn; and of course we visited the Cagle & Chessor cemeteries. If my g.g.grandparents are buried there, then they are in un-marked graves. When I started researching my family I didn't have a lot to go on. My dad was born in 1916, and his grandfather died in 1917. So he never knew him & only knew what limited amount he was told of him. Therefore when I started my research, he was the only one I had information on. His name was Thomas William Cagle b. 4-01-1840. Also I knew from my dad that he was born in Hickman Co; Tn. So about six years ago I started to take a serious look for my ancestors. At the time my wife & I lived in Columbia, Mo. There on the UMC campus is the State Historcal Society. This is where I first went to begin my research, and beleive me I had never looked at census or other records before this. So I started from scratch and asked alot of questions. Knowing my g-grandfather Thomas, was born in 1840 I looked for him in the 1850 Tennessee State Census Index. There wasn't many listings for Hickman Co; and that is where I found him as a 10 yr. old Tom, living with his family. My excitment was very high for I now knew his father, mother, and siblings. Of course enumerated next to Charles, was Charles Sr; and his wife Virginia. ( her true name was later learned to be Elizabeth Curb) This is how I was first to learn about my Cagle's. Of course once the genealogy bug bit me, then I was hooked. Little did I know then that my family started out in Germany. This I found out later on and that after Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, my family was to live in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas. It was in Texas, that I got more information on my family. Charles Jacob Cagle's son William, had later settled in Red River Co; Tx. This William, was my g.uncle and a brother to my g.grandfather, Thomas William Cagle. (Thomas & William, seemed to be popular names with our Cagle's) In an article in the local paper is a story in regards to William & Louisa Elizabeth Cagle (Risenhover) 50th. Wedding Anniversary. The story mentions there childrens names, and also his parents. This is where I first get some information on them other than the census. In the story it shows his father's name as, Jacob Charles Cagle. Here I wish to quote from this article that is dated 1923. "William's parents, Jacob Charles, born Mar. 28, 1818, and Mary Patton (Polly), born Oct. 23, 1824, never lived in Red River Co. Jacob Charles was what was known as "Black Dutch". That is of German and Holland descent, but did not want to be called German, therefore; "Black Dutch". He spoke very broken English. He and his family farmed for a living." by Cindy Sargent Simpson. This is where I found complete dates of birth for Charles & Mary. Plus I learned that her maiden name was, Patton. Also this was the first time I had seen his complete name, Jacob Charles Cagle. He must have decided to use Charles, as this is how he is listed in other records. What had led me to Red River Co; Tx; was my great grandmother, Mary Elvira Cagle. According to the 1900 census of Mississippi Co; Mo; she is shown b. Aug. 1860, in Arkansas. This was the last census that she & Thomas William Cagle, would appear together. He appears with two of their children in the 1910 Oregon Co; Mo; census. He would later move back to Charleston, Mo; and died there on 8-29-1917. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery next to his daughter Ida Mae Golightly (Cagle) and his son, William Cagle. Thomas William Cagle & Mary Elvira (Alvira) Cagle, were married in Oregon Co; Mo; on July 24, 1877. On there certifcate of marriage she is listed as Mary E. Cagle. So this may have been a cousin who married a cousin. Or too it may have been an error on the recorders part. So to this day I know nothing of her family. In a family plot at Lanes Chapel Cemetery, in Clarksville Red River Co; Tx; is a small marker with the name Mary Cagle. There are no dates or other information on her stone. This as far as I have been able to learn, is the final resting place of my great grandmther. Why she ended up in Texas (if that is the case) and he in Charleston, Mo; is beyond me. In my research I have yet to find her date of death. Some of the newspaper records from Red River Co; Tx; were destroyed. I wrote to the State Archives in Austin, Tx. They sent me photo copies of Cagle Deaths for Texas for 1903-1940. She was not listed among the many Cagle's, from across the state. So she has been, and continues to be, a stumbling block in research of my, Cagle's. By the way if anyone on the list have Cagle's, who settled in Texas I have the death records for 1903-1940. If you want a lookup from this just let me know. This lists the complete date of death, county, and death certificate number. So in closing if any of you ever come across anything on Mary E. Cagle, please let me know. Earl

Doyle and List, The Hickman Co Cagle's mentioned here are the ancestors of both Earl and me. In the early history of Hickman Co. the Cagle family starting with Charles, son of Leonard and grandson of Leonhart settled in the area that was to become Coble, TN. I remember a story my grandmother told me and later confirmed in a history of Hickman Co that I found recently. According to the history and my grandmother, Charles Cagle's sons and grandsons owned mills, stores, built churches and schools in the area of Coble, TN. When it came time to name the town it was believed it would be named Cagle, TN. However in those days the postmaster had the privilege of naming the town. Well, you can probably guess what the postmasters name was...Coble. So the town became known as Coble. The Cagle and Coble families not only intermarried, but the were also in business together. I have a photo of the Cagle/Coble mill that was located in Hickman Co. I also have a photo of the school/church built by th! e Cagles and where my great grandfather was preacher. Some of my Cagle ancestors are buried in the Cagle cemetery in Hickman CO. Tom Cagle

LaMona & list, As some of you know Nancy Jane, has some nice Cagle photos on her site. I am sure she would be happy to have more to post. So you or anyone else who has photos, please send her copies for all of us to see. What with Nancy's Photo Site, My Cagle Web Site, and Tom Cagle's Civil War Site, we are doing our ancestors proud. Earl
Hello all, For those of you who have Cagle's, who served in the Civil War. I myself have sent off for records, on some ancestors. It takes a little doing but is well worth your effort. This data is taken from the State of Tennessee Archives site: Earl ========================================= Tennessee State Library and Archives Historical and Genealogical Information TENNESSEE CIVIL WAR RESEARCH SOURCES Literally hundreds of sources are available for research on Civil War soldiers and related topics. The sources listed below are the most frequently used to locate information about Tennesseeans. Published sources can be checked and copies sent to you. Send $3 and the name of your soldier to: Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 7th Avenue North Nashville, TN 37243-0312 Specify which sources you would like us to check. Non-residents of Tennessee should write the National Archives for copies of service records. All researchers should write the National Archives for Union pension records. The address is: National Archives and Records Service 8th & Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, DC, 20408 SERVICE RECORDS Tennesseans in the Civil War (Nashville: Civil War Centennial Commission, 1964) 2 volumes Volume 1. Brief histories of each Tennessee unit in the Civil War. The information about the place of residence of most soldiers in each company is often useful. This information can help you distinguish between two soldiers of the same name who served in different units. This volume also includes a list of the units from each county. Volume 2. Two alphabetical lists of soldiers -- Confederate and Union. Compiled from service records, muster rolls, newspapers published during the war, and other sources. Once a name and unit are identified, copies of an individual's service record can be located. Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee (National Archives microfilm publication M268, 359 reels) and Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee (National Archives microfilm publication M395, 220 reels) TSL&A holds microfilm copies of service records for men in the state's Confederate and Union units. These records generally give date and place of enlistment, dates when the soldier was present at muster, promoted, captured, hospitalized or killed. Union records usually give the soldier's age. Sometimes further information is also in the file. Copies are provided by mail to Tennessee residents (write for price quote); others are referred to the National Archives (see address above). PENSION RECORDS Index to Tennessee Confederate Pension Applications by Samuel Sistler (Nashville: Sistler & Assoc., 1994) and Tennessee Confederate Pension Applications (TSLA microfilm publication, 114 reels) Beginning in 1891, Tennessee residents who could prove Confederate service were eligible for pension payments from the state, even if their service was in another state. Pensions for soldiers' widows were first issued in 1905. This volume has separate lists of soldiers, widows, and black soldiers who received pensions. Copy of a file is provided by the Library & Archives upon request for a fee of $5. The applications often privide personal information about the soldiers and their families. List of Pensioners on the Roll January 1, 1883 (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1883) reprinted 1970, 5 volumes Union Pensions are not available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Union soldiers and widows received their pensions from the federal government. The pension files have not been microfilmed and are only available in Washington, D.C. For copies of individual pension files, write to the National Archives (see address above). This published list of pensioners on the roll in 1883 is available in this library. It is arranged by county and provides the pension file number for access to the file at the National Archives. BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires (Easley SC: Southern Historical Press, 1985). Detailed answers given by 1,600 Tennessee veterans (mostly Confederate) from 1915 to 1922. Published in 5 volumes with a full-name index. Questions address social conditions and family life before the war, as well as wartime experiences. This is a published transcription; the originals are available on microfilm. 1860 Census - Tennessee by Byron & Barbara Sistler (Nashville: Sistler & Assoc., 1892) 5 volumes Sistler's index is actually an abstract of each family's census entry. In alphabetical order by surname, households for the entire state are in one list. Entries show the names and ages of each person in the household. Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (published in six parts) U.S. Surgeon General, (Washington: Govt. Printing Office 1870-1888.) Index published 1992. Case studies written by military surgeons detailing treatment of wounds and sickness. The majority are for Union soldiers, with a fair complement of Confederates. The three-volume index is a recent publication and can be searched by soldier's name or unit. Confederate Veteran Magazine, 1893-1932 and Cumulative Index (edited by Louis Manarin, 1986) in three volumes Includes many reminiscences written by veterans, obituaries and tributes, and accounts of battles and reunions. The index can be searched by name, place or unit. Confederate Patriot Index 1894-1924 (vol. 1) and 1924-1978 (vol. 2) Tenn. Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy (no pub. info.) List of soldiers whose descendants have joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Tennessee, giving some genealogical information about each soldier. 1890 Civil War Veterans Census - Tennessee (Evanston: Sistler & Assoc., 1978) List of Union veterans living in Tenn. in 1890 with age, service history, and place of residence. A few Confederates are also included. This is a published abstract; the original records are available on microfilm. UNIT HISTORIES Military Annals of Tennessee - Confederate. by John B. Lindsley (Nashville: Lindsley & Co., 1866) reprinted 1974 History of each Tennessee unit in the Civil War, often written by a member of the unit. Some are more detailed than others, but most tell which battles the unit participated in and list unit members who died in service. The War of the Rebellion: A compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1901) 100+ volumes, reprinted 1985 The official reports and correspondence of military leaders during the war. This huge set provides detailed reports of battles, troop movements and military activity all through the war. Many officers are named, but few private soldiers. Sections on each state include references to unit histories. Although this is out-of-date, it does cover many useful publications. MANUSCRIPTS Civil War Collection, Confederate and Federal Microfilmed manuscript collection on 20 reels, cataloged by an unpublished 120-page listing and index of the collection Microfilmed manuscript collection on 20 reels, cataloged by an unpublished 120-page register describing the contents of each box and folder. Includes diaries, muster rolls, reminiscences and other related papers. Very few individual names are listed in the register, but useful for locating material on a specific unit. Hi List, Since I posted last night, several have emailed to ask of what lines I belong to, so to make it short and easier for me, I will post to the list and see what bites. Would love to connect with any cousins, learn more about my Cagle's, see photos, as I have never seen any, share notes, etc. Am just starting my research on Cagle's. Have been passed on a line that takes it back to Leonhart but have yet to document this line that was worked by someone else. The above data has been documented from George Cagle down in time, but not up in time. Hi LaMona, This is cousin Maxine checking in again. I saw your post about the Cagle pictures. In case you might have forgotten, I also descend from Henry Cagle through son John Cagle who was born 1802 (according to my records) in Moore County, NC. Do you think William (1802) and John (1802) were twins? John married Phereby (Feruby) Rogers 22 Feb 1827 in Blount County, TN. She was born in Moore County, NC as well. I have not determined her Mother and Father as yet. John and Feruby had the following children: Emaline, John, Flora Ann, Shadrick, Martha, Lot, George, Ferbie Lee (my g-grandmother), Martin, Willis, and Elijah. I would certainly be interested in copies of any pictures you might have on this side of the Henry Cagle/Mary Barrett family. Unfortunately, the only picture I have is a family photo taken after Ferbie Lee died. It has her husband, Stephen Saffel and the children in it. I would be happy to share it, but would have to go by snail-mail, as I do not have a scanner. Please let me know if you happen to have any pictures that follow my line. Maxine Smith Clovis, CA
While researching my Brown ancestors in Lawrence County, Missouri, I found the following entry for Aurora City, Aurora Twp: line 51, ED 72, Sheet 39, 1900 census: Rosy Cagle, age 7, birthdate 12/1892, BP Missouri, Parents BP Arkansas, Occupation: at school. Was enumerated with Berry, ?Jerusha, white, female, age 61, BP Missouri, Mother's BP Kentucky, reads/writes/ owns home. The relationship of Rosy to ?Jerusha looks like "home". Parts of this record were very light and hard to read. Maybe this will help someone. Happy Holidays! Linda Lorange
Would these Cagles be Cagles of Moore County, NC? Thanks!
