    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: [3108 Luzon, Fresno] Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GW.2ADE/1021.1 Message Board Post: 3108 Luzon St., Fresno, no longer exists. It was on the east side of Luzon, the second building south of Shields Avenue, and was public housing, located in Hammer Field Village, between Peach and Clovis Avenues. It was near Airways Golf Course. During WWII it was military housing. These were two-story barracks buildings containing small apartments. Some of the other units were one-story duplexes. It was closed in the summer of 1962 and removed to make way for the extension of the Fresno Air Terminal runway. I lived in 3108-K, which was on the first floor, at the north end of the building designated as 3108. My aunt and her husband, Don and Dorcas Willhide, had the same apartment in the mid-1950s. Others who had lived in that building included the William C. Jeans family, in 3108-G. I can furnish a picture or two of the building and you can find articles with photos on the closure of Hammer Field Village in the Fresno Bee for May 27 and July 29, 1962. The pictures ! include two of the buildings, probably 3136- and 3108-, and one of a lovely tree-lined Luzon Street. There is also an article about Gladys Harland, the manager, in the July 5, 1962, Bee. It reveals the sense of community Village residents had felt. You can find Hammer Field Village on pre-1962 Fresno maps. All the streets were given historic WWII names, such as Cassino, Leyte, etc.
