You did mention you had found John in 1880 in the Fresno census. I also copied material from the NDGW book 5 page 324 and 325 which may shed some light on your question regarding WHEN and WHERE John DOAK died. Submission by Lula B. CLARKE (2105 E. Marsh Street, Stockton) indicates Mr. DOAK died in Illinois. He was married to Sally WYATT. (see census to show this must be the same John DOAK). I have also copied an article from the CALL in 1885 which is a reminiscence of John DOAK's experiences in the San Joaquin Valley. In this article it appears he is the cousin of Joseph Kent DOAK, who died Feb 20 1899 and there is an obit for Joseph in the CALL paper of Feb 21 1899 p10col2. I can get this for you if you are interest. Just let me know. Mr. J. K. DOAK was a native of Huntington Co PA whose parents were H. C. and Margaret (MARROW) DOAK. He apparently went to Murphy's with his cousin, John DOAK (who I assume is your John DOAK). This is from another book which contains J. K. DOAK's bio. J. K. married Sarah E. CHASE on Nov 1862 in Calaveras County and they had John E. DOAK, Sarah Elizabeth and Clara. (There is a John E. DOAK who died in Alameda age 47 on 10-5-1910 who may be the son mentioned.) Meanwhile, here are some highlights .... John born 1820 in Indiana, arrived in CA in 1847 by mule back. He lived in Stockton, Santa Cruz, Lunch Hill and Fresno He married Sally Wyatt and built the first big hotel in Stockton in 1848. Established the Canvas Hotel which was large enough to accomodate 100 people and he had colored cooks. All brought around the horn. Was a friend of Cap. Weber of Stockton. another submission in NDGW is for Ellen Jane DOAK born 1826 IN who came overland in 1853 She married Allen Allen WILLITS in IL. She and her children drove a carriage across the plains. Had 3 big covered wagons with 6 oxen on each wagon. Cooked for her family of 6 and had 9 men to protect them on the trip.
