    3. Here's a few things to look at in consideration of your area research that are up for auction at eBay right now. -deb Checks from A.MARTINI and Son, San Francisco, Kingsburg, drawn on the Kingsburg Bank, 1927-1928 Auction ends Aug 28 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1181750498 Sterling silver souvenir spoon, Fresno Courthouse Auction ends Aug 31 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1459144962 "Dances With Grapes -- starring Kevin..." OK, it's not dances with anything, but it is an early 1908 postcard of Fresno Vineyards. Look at those acres and acres of vines! My family raised oranges, not grapes, but I'll bet lots of you had vineyard ties in Fresno County. Auction ends Aug 31 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1182991446 1913 postcard, Fresno downtown, I street, depicting the old City Hall, Odd Fellows bldg and YMCA Auction ends Sept 2 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1183662772 1882 Magazine article Monterey to Tehachapi Pass -- includes Kern River Canyon, Fresno, Visalia, and well, go see the whole description. :) Auction ends Sept 2 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1459630761 Stereoview, Keystone, San Joaquin Valley Thresher/Reaper Combo, copyright 1897 Auction ends Sep 3 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1184007048

    3. Here's my monthly (or so) scan of the books with histories and biographies in them that are out of print and for sale over the internet from used book dealers: As Pop Saw It, vol 1 -- this is a coffee table picture book of vintage valley photos taken by Pop Laval, many of the old Fresno postcards are taken from his photos, too. There's three volumes altogether. $35.00 http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=13484610 Fifty Years in Fresno, Belle Kandarian, 1963 -- story from the Armenian community, signed first edition $12.50 http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=30012791 Fresno (California) Armenians (to 1919) by Wilson D. Wallis, 1965 $20.00 http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=65849056 Fresno County, the Pioneer Years: From the Beginnings to 1900 -- this is a large format hard cover book, this is volume I, there was a second one written to cover years after 1900. It's not easy to find this book at all, for any price. It was written by Charles Clough with the help of William Seacrest and others. For my money, these two books are the DEFINITIVE Fresno County Histories. The second volume, 1900-present (it was the 1980's, I think) is still available for sale by the Fresno County Historical Society. $49.99 http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y03Y3147578Y7259392 Fresno County in the 20th Century, from 1900 to the 1980's ... yeah, I told you there was a second volume. :) $44.00 http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y01Y3088131Y4351177 Fresno County Centennial Almanac, 184 pages of 1950's Fresno County centenniel info/history. You'll see this at much higher prices in places. Previously a library book, it's the hardback edition, but no dust jacket. A great price considering what the soiled soft covers go for (see below...) $25.00 http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=92818405 And here's an Almanac clearly labeled soft cover for an excellent price $18.00 http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y02Y0318318Y3651223 History of Fresno County, 1919, Paul Vandor, both volumes. I think I was at that cemetery as a child. My grandparents, who both died young, are buried there. I have slightly different info on Otto abrahamson. My info has Otto married to Maria Joseph (or Josephile, Josephine?) Nelson in 1866 and his son Chester married to Jenny Amelia Nelson in 1899. Do you think these are your relatives? I would be happy to exchange any information I have. Thank you for the post! I also seek info on Charles J. Anderson, Axtell area.

    3. Our daughter died in July. When we were making the arrangements through Sunset Funeral Home, the director informed us we could do a simple obituary for free or pay for extras just like taking out an ad. The prices started around $200.00. He said that $800.00 was about the highest he had ever seen. We opted for the simple one that gave her name, age, place of employment, town she lived in, date of death and that her services were handled through them. Anything bigger would have been the beginning of charges.

    3. Here is what you requested: FRANCIS C. KAUFMAN "MIKE" Born on August 7, 1910, Mike entered into Heaven on August 19, 2001 at the age of 91. Mike is survived by Velma, his wife of 64 years and their children; David and Linda Kaufman of Iowa, Duane and Sharon Kaufman of Illinois, Dorothy and Mel Cline of Fresno; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be heldat Stephens & Bean Chapel on Wednesday, August 22, 2001, from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be at Stephens & Bean Chapel, on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Greg Gebhart of Grace Nazarene Church officiating. The reason you can't find this obit anymore is because these are deleted each day. They are archived but are hard to find as the less complete ones show up. The search function on the archive doesn't search classified ads from what I have seen. Someone else may be able to answer your question better. I sent an email to the list explaining these things the text of the email is quoted below again for your information. "I index the Fresno Bee for Obit Daily Times. There are 3 different kinds of obits published in that paper. There is the standard one, that has minimal information, and are now ONLY archived for seven days at a time instead of a month. There are the paid ones, that contain more detailed information, (and are considered a classified ad), and they are deleted DAILY and then finally there are the ones that just say when the funeral service is going to be, usually on the day before and the day of the funeral. Using the online website you have to go to the obit link http://www.fresnobee.com/obituaries/ for the first kind, then you click on the three Services links. The first Service link contains the "paid" obits. They are deleted daily from the free section, after the first day they are hard to find in the archives and you have to pay $1.75. I have seen the paid ones show up quite awhile after the regular announcements. There are relatively very few "paid" obits compared to the main obit section. The Services Today and Services Tomorrow are just announcements of funeral services." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Aaron Hill" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2001 4:37 PM Subject: [CAFRESNO] Fresno Bee Aug. 22 Issue > > Can someone send me the page B5 from the Wednesday, August 22, 2001, issue > of The Fresno Bee? 3. It is hard and sad to believe that so little information is included in an obituary. And to have to pay for it. How tacky. Aaron Hill Deb, most of the time I find the Bee does two types of obits - one that just gives basic details - name, dod, where and when buried, and (if lucky) another one with details about the family, relations, occupation, etc.). I would think the second is put in by the family through the funeral home. 2. I think in most places, the death notice is the only think printed by the newpaper free. The obituary is sent in by the family, and the newspaper charges for it....and it is quite expensive, so I guess some families send in only the essentials. Patricia
