    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GW.2ADE/1030.2.1 Message Board Post: Dear Jim, Thanks so much for responding! Everyone has been so helpful!!! It is entirely possibly that Leighton is in fact Laton (although it was spelled Leighton both in the probate record and later in a newspaper clipping) The family in question is that of Matthew McCarty (b.abt 1849 in or around Chateaugay, NY to James McCarty and Anna Breen) and his wife Joanna Quinlan. Matthew moved from Belmont, NY in late 1908 or early 1909 and is listed in the probate of his mother as living in "Leighton, Fresno Co., CA). Matthew apparently had at least 7 children. The obituary of his daughter Eva from Malone NY in 1911 states that neither her father Matthew or any of her brothers or sisters were able to attend her funeral due to thier residence in California. There is another newspaper article on file at the HOH in Malone NY that was evidently sent to the NY newspaper from California that says James McCarty, son of Matthew late of Belmont, New York, and now of Leighton CA mar! ried Clara Seth in Chama, New Mexico - the date is unreadable on the article, except that it is clearly in the 19 hundreds. Chama has no record of thier marriage. The family was Catholic (as are all of the descendants that I have found so far) The names of Matthew McCarty and Joanna Quinlan's children were James John, Mary (Maria Agnes), Catherine, John, Eva, Joseph, and at least one more that I don't have a name for yet. Matthew was a blacksmith and a farmer in New York. Thanks Again Colleen

John Murray Hensley listed in this 1880 census below is the brother of George Washington Hensley(who married Annie Pennington listed in the obit of her father), and they are the sons of John Jackson Hensley and Margaret Murray. These families settled in Fresno CO. There is a sister of John Jackson --- Sarah Hensley who married into the Murray family also. (These families were close) Sarah was the wife of Abraham Hunter Murray who settled in Tulare CO. I have just posted three obits to the Tulare CO web site. All of these folks were included in some of the first pioneers of this area. I do not know who this Harold is, but suspect he may be related. Thank you... and YES! I don't know anymore about Charles and Ellen's children than there names. I have run into Doyles who may be related. Charles was a maker of granite monuments.

    1. [CAFresno] pre-1905 weekly update

Lots of good things are happening. We have gotten funding for Alameda County from the Livermore - Amador Genealogical Society and they will be helping with transcription although we will be working on it as well. We have also gotten the balance of our funding for San Francisco County from a very generous man in Australia. Also appears as we may be able to trade some info on San Francisco with another genealogical society who has done some we haven't and vice versa. Things are jumpin'. > >We have gotten Lake County and Modoc County out for transcription, Kern County done and soon to be online and naturally much more of San Francisco scheduled to go online as soon as proofing, etc gets done. We have had some questions about Sacramento County getting online, which is in the near future, but we are at the funding stage there and would like to get some of those pending online. We have about a dozen counties where the records are ordered and over 20 counties with over 30 volumes being transcribed right now. We want to get some of those done before we get another big county going (I can't find room for more files on my desk at the moment). Santa Cruz County has been funded as well and other donations toward some of the other counties which are building up their totals to cover costs. All of you have been wonderful with your donations to keep this ball rolling. > >Modoc County was transcribed by a donor an just needs to be set in our template which is happening right now so that should be up rather fast as well. Del Norte County is going out to start transcription too. And, we will be finishing up some of the other batches that have been in transcription for awhile. To put it nicely, we are working on completing some counties to get them online. > >I have to admit that I never dreamed this would move along as rapidly as it has been going. We have been at this for only two and one half months and the progress is phenomenal when you think about it. I couldn't do it without all the donors (over 90) and all the volunteers (well over 100). They are all incredible and really staying on top of all this. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize the response I would get with my first email that said "HELP! HELP! HELP!", way back in the beginning of January. You are all really wonderful and very giving and helpful people out there. All the support is incredible and the "Found" stories keep rolling in. > >To maintain this speed though, I regret to inform you, we cannot do lookups during this process. Several have asked and I have had to turn you down. We are getting them all online as fast as our little ol' fingers will go, so please be patient. > >The website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905> has only been up for less than two months and we have had almost 7000 hits so far, so we must be sparking some interest there. Keep visiting. That is what it is there for. We will keep you updated as new areas are placed on the web. Please note that weekly, the site is updated by Steve (my hero and our computer guru) to keep you informed on the latest completed files as well as the status of all the areas we currently have "under constructions". And to keep our hero happy is our heroine, Laura who keeps all our transcribers "technically" up to snuff. A special thanks to all of you. > >Me...I just organize (or try to) all this hullaballoo, keep the books, order records and help our transcribers when they can't read some of the older, too dark or too light handwriting. You could say I am technically the "non-technical" side of the project. If you would like to help, email me. If you would like to send a donation, send it to me. If you have a question, ask me. I will do what I can or send you in the right direction. > >Soooooo, for now, that is about it. We are working and hopefully, you are enjoying.
