    1. [CAELDORA] Re: Church Records 1897 to 1912/El Dorado Co.
    2. Helen J Kirtlan-Fingado
    3. Frank and his wife Anna Nelson Kirtlan owned or managed the Golden West Hotel in Diamond Springs from 1897 to about 1908. They then moved to Placerville where they managed the Western Hotel until 1912. Their daughter, and my aunt, Mildren Kirtlan Chapin, is now 100 years old. She told me today about attending Sunday School in the school house in Diamond Springs. She said her mother was a Presbyterian and her father a Methodist. Since her mind is foggy, I wondered if someone can tell me if there is someplace I can write to verify church information. Her grandparents, Robert and Barbara Nelson raised five children in Diamond Springs. We have a picture of Rev. Pierce but don't know his faith. Arlene and Earl were most helpful to me in the past. Their help was very much appreciated. Thank you. Helen hjfingado@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [CAELDORA] Help! MARTIN's-Goldrush
    2. LS
    3. Posted on: El Dorado Co. Ca Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/ElDorado?read=22 Surname: MARTIN ------------------------- I am seeking any information at all regarding Milton MARTIN's arrival (or the route taken) in CA or anything on his death/burial. He reportedly left GA with some other Martin's (left wife & most children behind) c. 1849/50 for the Goldrush. The ONLY thing I have to go on is I found a Milton Martin from GA, 51 yrs old (age fits) in 1860 in Georgetown, El Dorado Co, CA census index. Another person (unidentified owner of a Gedcom) reports him (them) in Placer Co in 1850, but I thought Placer Co was not established until 1851 or so? Maybe they meant "Placerville", El Dorado?? I have not been able to confirm his whereabouts in CA in 1850. The info from the other person reads as follows: "The census of Placer County California 1850 Van Buren, E. H. Martin 22 male white Merchant Residence Georgia, Milton Martin 42 white male miner born Georgia residence Georgia, Alex martin 23 male miner born Georgia residence Ga, James Martin 17 Male white Miner born Ga. reidence Ga." Milton had sons named E. H. and James, but if these are Milton's son's (ages closely fit) why are these two also listed in the 1850 census for Lumpkin Co. GA and Milton isn't? E. H. is shown as head of household in GA. Was it common to be listed in 2 different states for the same year? Why do they show "residences" listed as GA on the 1850 CA census? He also had a son named Van Buren, but he was only 9 years old in 1850 (and listed in GA). but the name Van Buren runs throughout this family. I'm pretty certain that the Milton Martin in Georgetown in 1860 is mine. Per GA Tax Digests, Milton is still listed as owner of his land in 1865. In 1867, wife Cyntha is listed as the owner. So he died sometime between 1860 & 1867, in CA? He is not buried in GA with his wife or other children (unless it's an unmarked grave). He's that elusive "CA Goldrush" mystery that many of us have and I'm at a loss. Are there any indexes of El Dorado cemetaries, or any death indexes, or any other indexes or resources from that time period I could refer to? I understand there was a special 1852 CA Goldrush census...is there an index? Where would an obit most likely have appeared? Any Goldrush or El Dorado Co experts out there? Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or can offer help in any way? Thanks, Luana

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Eileen To: Robrich649@cs.com Sent: Friday, April 14, 2000 3:52 PM Subject: Results/Wallace/El Dorado County Hello Roberta: I got a chance to go to the county today, I have good news and bad news. I didn't find Sarah and Thomas exactly but what I did find may help. I was looking for someone else actually and Wallace jumped out at me. Here is what I found: WALLACE 3 Aug 1879 7 months 4 days S/O Thomas and Sarah WALLACE This is in the records of the Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery. I was just there yesterday. Now let me tell you the bad news. The M.E. Cemetery used to be located at the corner of Cedar Ravine and Main St. in Placerville. I am not sure how or why the following happened but it was paved over. Where it was there is a building sitting in a cut out of the mountain. There are parts, (I don't believe all) of the cemetery at the top of the hill where the Methodist Church was moved and the Federated Pioneer Church is now. The head stones are laying down, broken and in no particular order. It is in shambles, what there is of it. From the list at the county and seeing it with my own two eyes I really don't believe all were moved. I will go back as soon as I can and look through the headstones for Thomas, Sarah or baby WALLACE. Since Thomas and Sarah are not mentioned on the county list I don't expect to find them there but I will continue to look for them in other places. I talked to the clerk about this terrible act of defacing cemeteries by paving over them and she is just as upset but says it was legal as long as they provided a list of the people that were buried there to the county. It is still legal in the Catholic Church to pave over a Cemetery but it can only be used for a church or a park. I am sorry I don't have more but I will keep you on my list for when I get caught up and will go to M.E. soon. Let me know if I can help in any other way and I'll let you know if I find any other tid bits. Eileen Gillette Researcher, El Dorado County

This comes from copies that are in the county records but information came from records that are held at the El Dorado County Museum Inventory. I don't know which of the two museum's I know of they are at or if I can even have access to them. But at least I have the information on Edwin BALL. Kelsey Cemetery BALL, Edwin 30 Apr 1895 Age 55 BALL, Matilda 12 Sep 1862 - 24 Sep 1916 BALL, Matilda (No further information on this Matilda BALL) There are 100 BALL'S listed in the El Dorado County Vital Records for Birth/Death and Marriage if you need other information. Edwin's isn't in there but Matilda's is for her death. If you want I can look at the book and page for Matilda's when I get caught up and see what it says. I found this in another addition to the Kelsey Cemetery section. Obit list for GEORGETOWN GAZETTE 1880 - 1907 (Newspaper, may still be in circulation and may be able to look up obit) This is what it says before the list. The names have been checked with the cemeteries of Greenwood, Coloma, Lotus, Georgetown, Volcanoville and Spanish Dry Diggins. No markers for them were found but are reported to be buried in Kelsey Cemetery Edwin BALL is on that list. That is about all I have let me know if I can help out some more. Hope this helps in some way. Eileen Gillette Researcher, El Dorado County

As yet I haven't found anything on the divorce of Samuel S. CURRIER and Susan C. GRAY CURRIER. Keep in mind we lost records to the fire in 1910. I don't know if the newspapers posted such things back then or not but maybe when I get caught up on all my requests I'll see what I can find out. Benjamin C. CURRIER born 29 Oct 1822 Native of Boston, Massachusetts died 7 April 1902 in Georgetown buried in the Georgetown Cemetery Row 1, Plot 23, Section 2 I found the following in the Vital Records at the County. They may or may not help. Casey Dalton CURRIER (Birth) 26 Sep 1980 Charles Henry CURRIER (Death) 23 Oct 1942 Elizabeth Marie CURRIER (Birth) 24 Mar 1971 There are two CURRIER'S in the El Dorado Phone Book. I add this as I have been having great luck lately finding living ancestors that can help fill in the blanks. C. CURRIER (209) 267-9313 P. S. CURRIER (530) 644-2938 This one is in Pollock Pines which is in Northern California half way between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Hope at least some of this helps. 3. Hello List, I have struck gold in El Dorado County. Thanks to the kindness of Valerie Keating, a county worker here I have complete access to her 16 years of cemetery records. She has given me permission to transcribe any or all of the records. Mind you this is in a 6" binder stuffed to the gills so it will take time. I would like to post the names and locations of the cemeteries but want permission from the list owner first. You are more then welcome to contact me with any questions you may have. I would like to set up a web page someday but, again this will take time, sure wish I was retired. Eileen Gillette

    3. Hi Eileen, Most of my ancestors (the Uhlenkamps and Smiths) are buried in Jayhawk Cemetery on Deer Valley Rd. They arrived in the early 1850's. It's great that you found these cemetery records. Do they go back only 16 years or are they records of earlier burials? I found several small books at the Stockton City Library concerning El Dorado County cemeteries. These books listed quite a few of the early cemeteries with the names and dates of those buried there. I found that the same cemetery listed in two different books did not necessarily have the same names. There are some inaccuracies. John Best Manteca

    3. Hello J There are several cemeteries in the area but only one main cemetery in Placerville proper it is Placerville Union Cemetery. I have been there, it is quite confusing the way it is laid out but there should be someone there during the week to ask . There is also a small Jewish Cemetery and another small one but I am not sure what this one is. The other large Cemetery in the area is Green Valley in Cameron Park and a small one in the town of El Dorado. I'll see what I can do for you. I'll check death certificates if all else fails, what is the time frame we are looking at here? 3. Hello List: I told Barbara from Berlin Germany that I would do a look-up for her in El Dorado County. I tried to e-mail the results to her but addy bounces back. I can't remember if she was on this list or El Do Co so will post to both, sorry to all that are on both. Barbara I looked up George and Amellia's marriage, the birth and death of their son George, and the death of father George. I looked under all possible spellings as you were not for sure how CHRISTENSON was spelled. I am sorry to tell you but I found nothing. Although El Dorado County started keeping records in 1850 there was a fire in 1910 that destroyed a good number of the records. We have a historical museum that I am told may have some older records but they are only open on the weekends. I'll try to get there this weekend, weather permitting. I'm sorry again for the dead end. Eileen Martello Gillette Pollock Pines, CA

She married William Henry HARRISON in Adair Co. KY in 1834. John STATON acted as surety in the marriage. The Sonoma Co. CA, census of 1870 lists the family of William HARRISON (b.1801-KY) and Judith (b.1816-KY) as follows: ---C.B.(24yr born approx. 1846 in MO) ---Maggie (16-yr born approx. 1854 in MO) ---Robert (13-yr, born 1857 in CA) ==> my g1gf ---Lucy (10-yr. born approx. 1860 in CA) It also lists Charles STATON (b. 1810?-KY) living with them. That puts the family in KY in 1834, and MO from approx. 1846?-1854, and in CA after that. I may have found this family on the 1850 Carroll Co. census, but the names don't quite match up.
